I believe I heard a story about why Old Glory doesn’t dip.

Way back in 1908 there were several Irish-Americans on the Olympic team, who had no love for the British. In fact, there was one man on the team (forget the name) who told the flag-bearer that if he dipped the flag, he would return back to the States via the hospital. I think I saw that on a program on the History Channel on St. Patrick’s Day.

So it began…

I found a story here: articles.latimes.com/2012/jul/22/sports/la-sp-0723-oly-dropping-flag-20120723

As a loyal, patriotic, and unapologetic American; I also feel that our flag should dip for no earthly king. I refuse to apologize to anyone for it, because I just simply think my country is better than theirs 🙂 If that makes me a “nationalist” or “ugly American”… AWESOME!!! 👍

You know if the Brits hadn’t insisted on wearing RED while running around in the woods during the Revolutionary War, maybe this thing could have turned our real different.

I mean COME ON! RED?!?

(I SEE you. . . . )😉

Well, the main reason the war was won was due to the nutritional deficiency of the British diet. It’s hard to fight an enemy on tea and crumpets, while your enemy relies on raw squirrel meat and whiskey.

This is a bit of a Catch-22. I was already reading the outrage that the US would dip it’s flag, and now the outrage that they aren’t.

I say, who cares?? Pour me a pint of Boddington’s, and let the games begin!!

Share some of that with me. I’m ready for the Olympics to start. I don’t think we should dip our flag to any earthly ruler, nor should anyone else, but the fact that this is even an issue gets my eyes rolling.

A flag is not anything sacred, and is not owed any special religious respect. It is only a secular symbol of a particular country. If a flag were sacred, then there was much disrespect being shown when the Allies tore down Nazi flags en masse and threw them to the ground. 🤷

Typical liberal comeback, imply those who show respect for their own national symbols are idolatrous flag worshippers and then insult said symbols by implying they have no meaning.

Mods, please lock this thread if it’s going to attract comments like this.

Let alone a ruler that claims the divine right of kings. A little arrogance goes a long ways.

:rotfl:

You have to stop. I literally LOL’d and people here are looking at me funny:mad:

😃

I rather ask the reverse. Why would any flag dip to any foreign monarch. It seems an unreasonable request for the Olympic organizers to ask of any country.

I guess my point is why? Why is it considered courtesy? Wouldn’t it be simple enough to substitute a more suitable form of courtesy that doesn’t involve such an importand symbol as the flag?

Does anyone know, did this happen in Salt Lake City? Atlanta?
