FLDS as true LDS

Before I was baptized Mormon the missionaries and one of the families that introduced me asked me if the “prophet” ever declared polygamy as doctrine again, would I follow it. I said I didn’t know and they said that I should think about this because if that’s what the “prophet” says should be done, then we should follow it. No questions asked. Iwill concede that not all Mormons feel this way, but **I’d say that most “faithful” Mormons I knew told me that if that ever came up they would just hope that their husbands weren’t “called” to have more than one wife, but would follow whatever they were asked to by the “prophet”. **Boy am I glad I got outta that one! 🙂
[Emphasis by me] This is nearly word for word what my best friend (LDS) said to me.

I brought it up specifically because it would tear me up watching her dynamic personality brought to such a low level. She compared it to hoping that a married Catholic might not be called to life-long celibacy but that I would follow if that were the case. It shocked me that she thought that sharing her husband with another woman was better than being called to marital continence.

Polygamy is simply open adultery. And yes the original LDS church taught it very clearly. The fundamentalists are living true Mormonism since current LDS believe that polygamy will be the norm in the celestial kingdom. 😦

Over on Recovery from Mormonism I have seen many Mormon women who were led to reject Mormonism when they first began to realize that polygamy was an eternal principle that will effect them in the future. So the principle of polygamy still serves a useful role in helping many Mormon women realize problems with their faith. It’s one of those issues which nag at many Mormon women even though they might seem content with their faith.

Hypothetical:

Would it be advantageous for there to be a compromise with LDS? Should polygamy be allowed in Utah only, with a limit of, say, three wives? Muslims who wish to practice polygamy would be welcome there? And in return, LDS would use the BOM primarily to teach about the consequences of racism, and make public its financial statements?

Such a compromise could prevent worse problems down the road. 🤷

That would certainly force a lot of Mormon women to deal forthrightly with the matter instead of maintaining their wishful thinking that polygamy would just go away.

Actually Polygamy WILL go away folks, because Mormon Theology is incorrect, God/“Heavenly Father” is not married to “Heavenly Mother”, nor does He have a slew of other wives. God does not live in Kolob (or even Kobol 😃 ) and there is no “Celestial Kingdom” as the Mormons understand it. When they pass from this world they will find all that out.

So the Mormon wives really don’t have anything to worry about, at least not about polygamy. Their concept of God is more problematic.

Generally speaking, it seems that the first step on the way out, for women, is asking questions about polygamy. Then, as spiritual healing occurs, the other questions are asked.

Sadly, I have heard some Mormon women say they would accept it if their prophet commanded it. As a person with a lot of female family members who are also devout mormon, the idea of them being sister wives gives me the creeps.

In my mormon ancestry there is polygamy. My mother always speaks of it very proudly. We are descended from a woman who was a sister-wife to her two biological sisters.

Creepy.

whyme, i’m curious if you have a response to post #73. earlier you had made statements that polygamy was approved by God in OT times. xmormon did a pretty good layout of why your interpretation is wrong. if you have no response, i guess we can disregard those things you said earlier, as being incorrect.
The practice of polygamy is clearly found in the Old Testament. Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon are prime examples of Old Testament saints who practiced it, the problem however comes when debating as to whether or not god sanctioned it. But it was practived. Here is an interesting argument in favor of the bible permitting polygamy:

bluecord.org/biblioblog/2006/04/polygamy-in-the-old-testament/

Of course there is a debate about it all but it is not unreasonable for somoeone to conclude that polygamy was permitted.

And if not we can disregard the claims of being Catholic.
I am just as catholic as you are. I don’t judge people according to their beliefs but according to their actions, if I judge at all. The polygamous family seems to be a good family and certainly I would put them up to many catholic families who lost the will to create a ‘domestic church’ for their family structure. I am sure that the polygamous family prays often and attempts to teach their children a moral life. They also seem happy and content with their family structure. Is it easy? Probably not, But they do believe that they are doing the god’s word…what more can be said?

Since Mormons are not Christians, and didn’t even claim to be Christians until recently, we don’t have a problem here.
So says you. But mormons have always considered themselves to be christian. So I guess you do have a problem. 🙂

it’s hard enough to please one wife, i could only imagine trying to please a few other wives… sheesh…
i love my wife though.
I agree. But the purpose of me posting the website with the polygaous family was to show that there are polygamous families in Utah that are not a part of the flds and perhaps these independent polygamous families are getting a bad rap.

I respect the fact that you’re openminded about it all. Admittedly, it doesn’t look like a safety hazard or an issue for law enforcement, but it’s not the way I’d choose to live.

He probably works really hard, comes home late, gets up early, and does it again. It resembles 3 single mothers living together with an absent father more than it does a functional home.

That’s just my opinion, but you asked for it.
I have no idea about the husband but I do know from the video that the kids love to play football with their dad and that means something. Plus, I think the kids have three mothers who look after them very well. I just liked what I saw but I have no idea about reality. But if their reality is like it is in the video I say more power to them. The kids look decent and spiritual. I saw no rebels in the pack. And the women got a good head on their shoulders.

Their god’s word. Not ours.

Stoning was also a means of executing criminals, but we no longer practice that.

In any case, we shouldn’t confuse cultural practices with actual commands by God. Abraham never actually had (from my knowledge) any other wives in addition to Sarah, although I knew he did have Ishmael through another woman. Jacob was tricked by his father-in-law when he wanted to marry Rachel, ended up marrying Leah instead.

As for David and Solomon, David committed murder to marry Bathsheba and Solomon turned away from God, so we shouldn’t point to them as examples to be followed.

so now you champion the cause of fundamentalist mormon polygamists? amazing since you have daughters. I find it baffling that someone who claims to have lost faith in God retains it in Joseph Smith to such a high degree.

Actually that’s pretty typical for someone leaving mormonism. Their belief in Joseph Smith and certain elements of the heresy he began are the hardest to leave behind.

For me, it was the idea of a pre-existence. Even after I became a Christian, I was very sad about that. Until I realized it was just one more level of deception.

whyme’s religion consists of whatever he personally likes. So it doesn’t really have anything to do with God or JS. Only has to do with himself. Apparently, he is enamored of the idea of being a polygamist. Therefore, it is Good and needs defending.

And none of the beliefs he’s put on his plate show him to be even a cafeteria Catholic.

I don’t believe his religion consists of what he likes I believe he’s Mormon. He doesn’t “defend” LDS on the MAAD boards he exposes on it, up holds it. Sustains it.
