FMIL invited 200+ additional people to the wedding

Hey guys!

I don’t know if you are all tired of hearing about my wedding yet, but I thought I’d mention this one!

Mostly my wedding preparation has been boring, so Murphyesque law dictates this had to happen, lol. Everyone has really pitched in and helped and I think this is really bringing to gether my friends and family.

So guess what I learned…my FMIL purchased 50 additional invitations, that then went to over 200 people, many of which I don’t know even in acquaintance and several of which are not welcome due to prior conduct.

On top of that, she verbally invited at least 20 more people and their families/children.

Please note: I am the sole financial contributor of this wedding and I signed all the contracts.

So my future hubby called up his parents to tell them there’s no way extras are coming to the wedding and they told him it’s not in our hands anymore, to take a deep breath, say a prayer and let it go!

I guess weddings make people act weird. Anyways, it is a closed, formal reception so it’s not as if these people can show up. I myself am mainly entertained by this, although I think others are pretty angry (parents, fiancee, friends, etc).

Pretty strange, huh?
 
just call and say, hey thanks for the info on the extra people you invited. i called the caterer and this will cost and addition $$$, how do you plan to pay for it? the caterer needs the money by next Wednesday. also the hall only seats 200, so I am not sure where you plan to put your guests.

The caterer finalized with us Wednesday, but we did manage to get her to say she will pay for 8 people before the finalization.

Also, keep in mind a lot of these people were unwelcome, regardless of finances. That’s what I think is so funny. Hehe, let’s put my sister right next to her exfiancee and his family! 🤷

Anyways, good suggestion, my thread was just to share the comedy I guess since everything is done from this point on. Lol, our caterer is out of town until the week of the wedding, too!

I think it is great that you see this as humorous… I mean it is silly. 🙂 But if it had happened to me two weeks before the wedding I would have totally lost it…:banghead:

Well, I must admit I almost went kaboom when I found out a teen RSVP’d on my little sister’s facebook 5 weeks after getting an invite, saying her mommy was dropping her and two younger siblings off at the reception and then the parents were going out for the night.

Keep in mind, this is a formal, closed reception with alcohol, till midnight, downtown. lol! Some people. 🤷

guess this will give you some good ideas on how to rearrange the seating plan, NewMom and NewDad, I know how much you want Uncle Bob the lush and Auntie Mame the b—h to be here so they will be sitting at your table. have fun.

I’m thinking more like Jerry Springer visits my super formal reception with his guests and does a free show before, during and after dinner. :bigyikes: hahaha!

I told FMIL that only people on the guest list were allowed in, but she just assured me it’s no problem…her noninvited guests will pretend to be other people to get in.

👍 You gotta love the drama.

Okay, on the serious side, if I had other things going on in my life, I’d probably super stressed out. But, this is kind of interesting in a detached way.

I took 2 or 3 Facebook RSVPs, but those were people I forgot. What is it about weddings that make people think anything goes? Good luck on the day.

Lol, between the three parties (his parents, my parents, us) the total was like 187. That list included just family, relatives, a few close friends/longtime family friends, and my bridal partys’ dates.

She took it to 402 with her guests and I have no idea how many are verbally invited and not on the list. :rolleyes:
 
So have you hired security to do ID checks?

Man, this is disaster in the making. Good luck at Christmas and Thanksgiving!

Wow, the nerve of some people. Well, they can all come to the Wedding Mass and only those invited to the reception should be able to come. Can you let everyone know that they need to bring their invitations to get in?

Is your Wedding going to be on Nov. 24? I seem to recall that is when it will be as that is my parent’s anniversary (let me think, that would be their 52nd at that).

Yes, it is the 24th.

It is an invitation only event and I’ve been trying to let everyone know about that. We will see what happens, lol!

FMIL’s hubby has joined in on this now and is sure that I am being self-serving for not allowing these people to attend. :rolleyes:

I would seriously consider hiring someone at the door. Very strict “ushers/host” (a.k.a bouncers):
"May I see your invitations please?
Thank you, I’ll escort your party to your table…"
About 5 such ushers should do the trick, that way there’s always one at the door.'
Once those with invitations are seated - the rest could stand about the room if the owner doesn’t care, but at least those invited would get a seat and their meal.
That or I’d seriously reconsider marrying a fellow who would let his parents run rough shod of us like that.

A simple, elegant wedding, followed by a nice cake and some wine, no more than 200 invitations, so about 100 - 150 actual attending guest, toss the bouquet, and hit the road for the honeymoon.
That’s what we did and I’m so glad.

Good idea! I am meeting with my rep at the site to make sure they will be taking care of this for me, and the rep said to leave her a hard copy of the guest list and a copy of a “nonguest” list so that they could especially keep things under control.

Well, philosphically speaking it is a huge fiasco, but future hubby and I are resting pretty peacefully because in reality, we and our guests will be upstairs in our room celebrating, with ushers downstairs professionaly checking everyone. No matter how crazy this situation is, I know everything will go smoothly. The site we chose frequently does weddings (every weekend in the year is filled, lol) and the site remains open to the public during all the events, so the staff is very experienced in how to create a separate atmosphere.

I find your story to be so facinating and your reaction to be equally so. Good for you! You shouldn’t have to deal with such a problem on one of the happiest days of your life.

Best wishes on your marriage. Please do tell us how it turns out…after the honeymoon, of course…and the gift opening…and the thank you cards – all 402 of them!! 😛
 
I just gotta say a couple of things about this:
  1. Your attitude is STELLAR. I am just so incredibly impressed and inspired by you. Seriously, most brides have already gone into Bride-zilla mode. I don’t think I would have the patience to deal with this as peacefully as you have – and I am about to have my fourth child! LOL – God Bless you. I guess what I am really trying to say in this part is that you are so blessed to go into this marriage with your attitude. Most people miss enjoying their wedding’s because everything is so stressful. To have future family pull this kind of “stunt” would make most women pull out their hair and go screaming for the Zanax!!!
