Well, congrats to the Saints for playing an excellent game after getting down early. They certainly deserve to go to the conference championship game!

NFC Rams at Saints (Sun 3:05 ET Fox)

AFC Patriots at Chiefs (Sun 6:45 ET CBS)

Who is going to the Super Bowl? šŸ™‚

Glad the Rams won, and disappointed the Chiefs lost.

So I guess for the SB, Iā€™m Team Rams!

I was really hoping for a Rams/Chiefs rematch. Oh well, guess itā€™s almost time for the annual Root Against the Patriots Day.

I was watching the game when a particular foul occurred. As flagrant as it was, even our resident priest would have noticed that (heā€™s 75% blind).

After these past 2 seasons, the Saints could sure use a New Orleans Dad moving forward. šŸ™‚

Since only one team deserves to be there. Its Patā€™s and the GOAT on SB sunday!

As someone who used to ref soccer and play various sports, I really hate the ā€œref blew the big gameā€ narrative that seems to come up in at least one sport every year. A call from the ref is just one event in a game that likely lasted 60 - 90 minutes depending on the sport. If you lose the game from that one event, you were never the clearly better team to begin with. Considering that the champion is ideally the best team of the year, Iā€™m not going to shed tears. At most, I might point out that the NFLā€™s awful playoff structure invites stuff like this to happen. In any other sport, you move onto the next game, because losing one game still gives you a few more chances to prove youā€™re better.

Ultimately, though, it is just cathartic to blame the ref. You can still claim that your team was better and that they were merely the victim of unfortunate circumstance. Itā€™s why Iā€™m glad that, as a ref, I could end games prematurely. It gave me some course of action whenever an obnoxious parent decided that I was the sole reason their childā€™s team was losing, because of course their perfect child would otherwise carry the team to victory single-handed.

Had the ref thrown the flag for the obvious pass interference, it would have all but guaranteed victory for the Saints. They would have been able to wind the clock down and kick the chip-shot FG while leaving maybe 15 or so seconds left for the Rams to try a couple desperation plays with no timeouts leftā€¦

Should the ref be accused of not doing his job at such a critical moment in such a high-stakes playoff game, or did he honestly somehow miss what everyone else clearly saw happen?

Either way, whatever happened there wasnā€™t the Rams fault, and they do deserve some credit for being able to drive back down the field with about 1:40 left to tie it up again with a 48 yd FG. Then in overtime, forcing Brees to throw an interception which then led to the clutch 57 yd FG to win the game.

They were the two top NFC teams throughout the season. Itā€™s really too bad it had to end with this controversy.

Yes, but Iā€™d say that American football is pretty unique in the power of the refereeā€¦
You mention playoff structure- How do you think it could be done better? Certainly, a game-heavy format like the NBA would sell better, but football requires way more time for players to recover, and discarding that would lead to injury rates the NFLPA would find unacceptable.

Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d agree. Referees are certainly scrutinized more in American football, but Iā€™m not sure that is so much that they have more power so much as the pace of football permits it.

Iā€™m aware of the reason given for a week-by-week schedule. (Granted, I suspect it helps the NFLā€™s image in ways, but thatā€™s another discussion entirely.) However, in terms of allowing the truly best team to come through, it doesnā€™t do as good a job as basketball, hockey, or baseball. Not only does it remove the ability for teams to make game-by-game readjustments, it lets stuff like this, off-games, and bad luck take over because you canā€™t just go to the next game and prove that you really do deserve to move on.

Officiating was terrible this season. THIS was called PI:

Jesse caught it!

On the one hand I want the Rams to win. Theyā€™re not the home team. That would be the 49ers. But it is the same state, so they feel a lot more like a home team than the Patriots.

On the other hand, I like watching the world burn, and it will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh fans deal with no longer having more Super Bowl wins than everyone else. The crying on Facebook should be epic!

Edit: I seriously called the Rams ā€œSt. Louisā€, even as I acknowledged them being in California! I need to go to bed!

SOā€¦ Patriots or Rams? and give me reasons why.
Here we see the famous Randyā€™s Donuts shop in Los Angeles being repainted in the blue and gold colors of the Los Angeles Rams. It would be a shame to put in all this effort of repainting a giant donut if the Rams lost.
