I read that this idea is just being floated at the moment as a way to address a growing problem. The sacraments are still as ‘free’ as anywhere else.
I mean its logical though that if the Parishes rely on a tax allocation from the State to survive, there must be some kind of third party accountability scheme. If you pay car registration in order that the roads you want to used are maintained properly, you are legally accountable if you use those roads without paying the tax. Hopefully stressing the correlation between the tax dollar and the maintenance of the Parish will be enough to inform the conscience of most Catholics without having to present a tax document each time you go to confession or Holy Communion. One would like to hope that a practicing Catholic is more likely to be honest in all aspects of their life, especially towards taxation law. What is the alternative? Let their parish close down out of spite?
