IMOA- I know people may not agree with me because of the nature of the store but the best bras i have found are Victoria Secret (Lane Bryant for when you get beyong a 40C). There bras just give so much support and coverage. I use them for my everyday bra wearing. As a small D/large C its hard to find good bras.I decided it was worth spedning $50 on a bra that i wear pretty much everyday (i have different colors so i rotate them.
I’ve yet to have a VS bra that lasted more than 2 months. Every single time, the underwires pop out, sometimes in the underarm, sometimes in the center, and sometimes they just break in the middle.

OTOH, can get a bra at Target and it will last a year without the popping out of the underwire 🤷

I buy all my bras at either Victoria’s Secret or Gap Body, and while sometimes the underwire does pop out, I have many that have lasted a year or longer.

I feel much more comfortable wearing a bra, if I don’t wear one I feel saggy and jiggly. I wear a 34-B. I don’t think it’s a moral issue, but one of personal preference.

Why did your mother make you sleep in a bra? That sounds unhealthy. I’ve never heard of that. My mother forbade me to sleep in a bra, she said it’s not healthy, but she let me do it the first night after I got my first bra, since I was so excited to finally require a bra! 😃

I agree with the Lane Bryant suggestion - The Balconette is the most comfortable and supportive bra I’ve ever owned. Once I found it, I bought six of them. 😃 And it is the PERFECT t-shirt bra - absolutely no show through. 😉

I too wore a bra to bed for a short time many years ago. I was having a lot of discomfort/tenderness, and it just felt better to be supported all night. Thinking back on that whole episode, and some other things I was experiencing at the time, I think I may have been pregnant and didn’t realize it. 😦

Anyway - in that situation it was MUCH more comfortable for me to sleep in a light cotton bra than without.

**Back to the OP…

did the bras bother you before you went braless while sick? If not then maybe you just need to get used to them again?

My bras never used to bother me. I could never understand how they bothered my mom so much that she would have to get out of hers the second we came home from being out. NOW I understand.

Since I had my DD I have been stuck at home A LOT. I am also still nursing. So I wear those tank tops with the built in bra pretty much all day and to sleep. Now when i have to put on a regular bra to go out (or if someone comes over) it drives me bonkers for the first little while. But if I have to wear one a few days in a row it gets less noticeable.

So I agree with everyone here who thinks that you should not be braless in public…try to find a more comfy bra (sports bras ARE awesome) and just wear it. If it didn’t bother you much before you should get used to it again in no time:shrug:

I’ll echo the posts about getting fitted for a bra by a professional bra fitter. For literally years I wore the wrong size bra, and I finally got up the courage to go to a little boutique here and be fitted and purchase a really good bra. Wow, no more backache, no fatty out-stick next to my underarms, no strap ditches in my shoulders. I do still have el cheapo bras from WalMart, Target etc. but as they wear out I am replacing with good bras…my fave brand is Olga.

(Now I will sit back and wait for all the messages to explain my user name:D 😃 😃 )

It’s not the username I would question, but the suburb of constantinople.

The bras that have worked best for me is a Cross Your Heart bra. It’s extremely supportive and has really held up. I hand wash them and never put them in the dryer, except by accident. They were fairly pricely but worth every penny and have held up for years! I love these bras!!!

As for as the “cold factor”, everyone can tell when I’m cold, in a bra, t shirt, and sometimes sweater or sweatshirt. Yes, “they” stick out that much! They’d probably pop out even if I were wearing a burka. So what am I going to do? I have 3 small kids (4th on the way), so I can’t walk around w/ my arms across my chest. And the summer is worse, b/c it’s hot outside, and I keep my house at a reasonable temp. (@ 72F), so I wear lighter clothers (one layer), but stores, malls, libraries, CHURCHES, are freezing! It’s ok when I have a baby, b/c the baby in the sling keeps them covered, but otherwise, people are going to see my nipples, and they’re just going to have to live with it. I also have a huge chest (40F), and wear an underwire “minimizer” bra (allegedly reduces your appearance by a cup size-but that’s still 40 DDD for me), but I still “jiggle”. Then there’s nursing, and nursing bras don’t come in underwire (I’ve heard it can hurt production), so I sag and jiggle even more in those! So am I just supposed to stay in my house all the time, or just live w/ the fact that everyone who sees me apparently (from some of the replies on this thread) thinks I’m white trash?

In Christ,

Ellen

Whoa! Hold on sister - just chill out! No one here is pointing a finger at you, I don’t believe you have even posted until now anyway. Why are YOU taking this so personally when no one has said one word about you!!!

You do what you can do - I’m sure you aren’t happy about it, but it is what it is. I doubt anyone here is ready to condemn you for it.

Sheesh.

ALLGIRLS–

My posts were referring to wearing a bra to be more modest…similar to not wearing an extremely low cut shirt with a ton of cleavage. There’s nothing wrong with being well endowed (I don’t fall into that category even though I wish I did! 😉 ) and we’re not advocating against a woman’s shape. We’re just saying wearing a bra helps be more modest by helping prevent or reducing in some part situations where the chest can have more attention drawn to it (cold or running, etc.). That’s all…🙂

Acutally I post a lot (check out my join date), not a whole lot on this particular forum, though. And I wasn’t “unhappy” (just wish I could find button down shirts as easy as normal chested women) with the way I look, I figure this is the chest God gave me (yes, they’re real, and dh thinks they’re spectacular 😉 ), but then read some threads here that said that nipples and “jiggling” look “trashy”. I wear a bra (industrial strength! 👍 ), and still have that. Dh notices, so I must assume others do as well. Now I’m wondering if everyone thinks I’m a big hoosier (St. Louis use of the word, not Indiana 😛 ) for it.

And I was going to tell the OP that if she’s so small she doesn’t need the bra for support, so long as she’s not wearing super shear clothing, a tank or camisole would probably do the trick and be comfy. And if her dh can’t even tell if whether she’s wearing a bra, I highly doubt anyone else can (outside of maybe professional bra fitters?). That’s how I gauge clothing, I ask dh if anything’s “showing”, or too tight ('cause something can feel comfortable and still look too tight). I think push up bras that cause a “rack” of cleavage (especially on someone that normally wouldn’t have any) is way more immodest than a small breasted woman going braless and jiggling a little. JMO, though.

In Christ,

Ellen

Some women do have large nipples that look noticable under a shirt. Other women have flatter nipples that don’t show up. Women vary in nipple size. It also depends on the type of shirt worn, if the nipples show.

Wow, I was not expecting so many replies since last night. Nice discussion ladies 😃

To clear up a few points real quick, I HAVE been sized every time I get new bras and it’s been the same for years. I also get my bras from Victoria Secret – expensive, but they are good bras that last a long time for me (gentle wash, lay out to dry, etc).
did the bras bother you before you went braless while sick? If not then maybe you just need to get used to them again?
Malia, they never bothered me before. I always thought they were comfortable and, I only recently stopped wearing bras (no underwire) to bed – again, I don’t know why my mom made me wear them to bed, but once you get in the habbit of doing something, you just keep doing it even though you don’t know why.

Once I finally got healthy enough to return to classes, I put a bra on and commented to my husband how uncomfortable and restricted it felt. He told me maybe I should just stop wearing them because in all honesty he couldn’t tell when I was wearing one and when I wasn’t. That’s the whole reason I started this thread because that particular line of thought NEVER crossed my mind before, and if he wouldn’t have said it, I doubt it ever would have.

I looked up nursing tanks to see what you were talking about (no babies yet in our family) and they are really quite similar to the tanks I’ve been wearing around the house. Maybe that’s why hubby can’t tell a difference, lol. Mine do not have a built in bra persay, but they do have an extra layer of cloth under the visible tank part that is held right under the breasts with an elestic band. The entire tank is a tight fitting spandex/polyester blend so that helps smush things a bit so I don’t jiggle everywhere.

I would never wear just that tank as a standalone shirt, even with a bra underneath it… that’s just too much exposed skin for my tastes. I won’t even wear sleevless shirts out in public!

I meant on THIS discussion. I know you have been a member for some time now.

Well you sure did sound like you were!!!

I’m right there with ya - in every respect. 😉

That’s where you can’t take things personally when they are not intended for you. The comments had to do with going totally braless - not your (or my) situation. I didn’t even think twice about it.

Asit. I also have a huge chest (40F), and wear an underwire “minimizer” bra (allegedly reduces your appearance by a cup size-but that’s still 40 DDD for me), but I still “jiggle”.
minimizers just change the pattern of where you bulge and don’t solf the problem
the serious motion control bra from Junonia is pricey but worth every cent if you are heavy breasted enough to have back and shoulder pain, in fact they have the best selection of bras of any full figured catalog store I know (and I know a lot). again you should get professionally sized at a real world, preferably in a similar style or brand like Goddess or Valmont that caters to larger sizes, and be prepared to try a couple of size combos until you know what works for your brand, but if you have pain the investment will be worth it. hand wash in baby shampoo and line dry.

obviously not a nursing bra, but while that is going on, do what works for you and the baby juggling, you only have two hands (and two, uh you know) got DD the specific maternity tops for nursing, some of which have a build in shelf bra that can be opened with one hand, and she loves them.

and I think someone else may have already said this, but if you can’t find something that’s exactly right, get the next best thing and have it tailored to fit properly. I’ve altered bras many times (I’m a professional tailor when I’m not posting on the forums).

I’m really sorry you have to deal with that. My stepmother’s mother is just a little bit smaller than you. She’s in her 60s I think and she talks about wanting breast reduction surgery all the time to help with her back pain, although, she says, she had a lot of fun with them when she was younger

People do generalize a lot, and most women especially are extremely judgemental to other women they see in public – I’m not referring to people on this forum because I don’t know anyone here personally; I’m talking about the women in my family and those in my hometown that I had associations with while growing up. They are almost all extremely judgemental and will jump on anything from this lady that never has a hair out of place (how is that a bad thing?) to the lady in the grocery store line that has 6 little kids, welfare, greasy hair, and breasts (no bra) that hang almost to her knees covered with a thin dingy white tshirt (real nice lady actually but she sure looked rough and a lot of people judged her based solely on appearance).

Sadly most people see somebody that’s different from their individual definition of normal – bra showing/no bra, weird clothing/hair/piercings/tatoos, breastfeeding in public, reading certain types of books, activists, SAHMs, homeschooling, anything that that individual person doesn’t consider “normal” – and those people are going to judge the “weirdos” accordingly.

In my experience most people aren’t humble, most people don’t assume the best of others, most people are busy-bodies, and most people aren’t shy of telling others every little shred of gossip they know. Again, that’s not meant to offend anyone because those are just the kind of people I’ve been surrounded with since I was born.
