Unfortunately they never came to get me today. they had stated that they where going to but i guess they couldn’t find a ride for me or something. I did try and call down there but couldn’t get a answer i guess ill call on Monday and see what happened.

Hopefully it will all get worked out soon so i can go .

. . .

Don’t worry if it all seems confusing to you, or you feel a little out of place. Just stand, sit, and kneel when everyone else does, and participate as much as you feel comfortable doing so. There should be an outline of the Mass responses in the pew if you wish to follow along. The only thing we do ask if that when it comes time for Communion, just stay in the pew and allow others in the pew to get by. (The reason we have closed communion is theological, the bread and wine on the altar truly, really turn into the Body and Blood of Jesus Himself, and we want to make sure that no one partakes of Communion unless they truly know what they are doing, and believe it is His Body and Blood.) (Emphasis added)

Welcome to Mass! Hope you enjoy yourself. Make sure to come back on here and update on how it goes and your thoughts. God bless!
There are other reasons–not least that “communion” is a true communion, a union with one another through the Body of Christ we receive. As such, one who is not a member of that Body should not be casually making themselves part of it. It requires formal membership–either through baptism into the Body, or a profession of faith. This is what the OP is hoping to achieve–which means they are not yet there!

Just to update I will be attending mass this Saturday night for sure i finally have a ride!

Is there a difference between attending on Saturday vs Sunday? if you are catholic does it still count?

Also i have noticed that my ESV bible is not meshing well with some of the prof texts that i have been studying when learning the catholic faith. IS it not a good version? and if not which one should i get?

I’ve been following the thread. I’m hopeful that you find a great connection with God.

Generally, Catholics are obligated to celebrate Mass on Sunday. But, Sunday is defined as starting Saturday evening and going through the end of the day on Sunday. I am traveling this Sunday, so I will be attending this coming Saturday evening.

The Church teaches this obligation because all of the faithful are gathered in prayer. When you go to Mass this weekend, you are not going to watch. You will be participating in unison with the other faithful. That participation sanctifies the day - and so that is where the obligation comes from. It is our chance to participate in the sanctification of the day.

I am glad you got a ride, I will keep you in my prayers.

There is no difference between Saturday evening mass, and Sunday morning. There are some people that make the Saturday evening mass there normal mass to attend for the Sunday Obligation. You are perfectly fine with it.

As for ESV, I personally am not a fan of it. There tend to be two different ways of doing translations. One is more of a word for word translation. Obviously the negative to this way, is that a saying that meant something 2,000 years ago, is lost on us today. But, this way does tend to leave out the biases of the translator as far as what the original writer was actually saying. The other way, is to translate the Bible into what the original author was attempting to say. The obvious negative to this, is the translators theological bias is going to end up coming threw. The ESV is one of the worst Bibles for translating meaning, meaning that more and more you don’t actually get what was actually written, but what the translator thinks was written.

Here is a link from EWTN on the best Catholic Bibles.

If you do want to join the Catholic Church, you really should consider buying a Catholic Bible, it is the only one that has the books of the Deuterocanon, which are great books to read as well.

Personally my favorite is the Douay-Rheims Version.

Meh, not a great one in my opinion. I would recommend the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible by Scott Hahn. It is excellent and has TONS of extra material to help with learning. It is just the NT so far, but the OT should be coming out soon.
I have to agree, if you are going to get a Study Bible, the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible by Scott Hahn is hands down the best…

Here is a link to get it from Amazon.

I got to go to mass today. It was of course different than any church service that i have ever been to but i honestly enjoyed it. I noticed a lot more reverence and respect during the mass. than in the Protestant churches that i am used to attending witch i really liked.

I am going to attend mass next Saturday as well ,and classes for the RICA will begin in September,so i can not wait to go and learn more.

** Blessed Mother, please intercede for us.
Hold the sorrowful, strengthen the fearful,
mother and love the weary, abused, neglected
or forgotten among us,
give your aid to all needing help or healing,
assist those who are sick, in pain or suffering,
be with those needing peace,
console the lonely or brokenhearted,
comfort the lost or hopeless,
guard the unborn,
pray for those who are dying or who have died,
soften those with hardened hearts,
enlighten those who do not yet see truth,
help us be brave enough to let our hurt and anger go,
show us the way to do the right thing,
protect those who are in danger,
and guide us from every evil.
May all who keep your sacred commemoration
experience the might of your assistance.
Amen :gopray: **

Tabby… I know what you are talking about. Including the “fear” and the “stories”.

When I went to sda academy (aka boarding high schools ) I distinctly remember a student drama presentation of their end time beliefs where people were hiding in the woods/mountains in a little house from the united govt and catholic persecution and then they got caught and some got shot.

As a boy I recall in a grade school being taught how this union of catholics and government was going to unite to persecute us and make us deny the sabbath. I was terrified as a 2nd grader to hear how they might line us up on the wall in the church foyer and ask us if we would deny the sabbath and if we said no shoot us.

This stuff is absurd, I suspect most reading this will find it hard to believe but it was for sure what was being presented.

Anyway long story short… I too am a former SDA and in 2013 I was received into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Bintz,

And the roots of this thinking is from a lady who’s name in Roman numerals adds up to 666?

Under the current regime, there is little fear that the US Government and the Catholics will be together anytime soon. Far more likely that the Catholics and the SDA will be persecuted together for wanting to live their faith outside of the church/temple walls!

I have a few SDA friends who I always like to discuss my Catholic faith with. For a few years they use to always talk about their SDA beliefs, but they never knew I was Catholic, nor did I ever tell them. It was sort of like the fly in the wall scenario. Instead of withholding their true beliefs about the Catholic Church, I heard what was really on their minds.

I’m still friends with them regardless. I truly believe they have good hearts and souls. At the same time, there is no way I’ll continue to sit back and let them tell me and others what the Church believes. I’ve had discussions that literately lasted 3-4 hours non-stop.

What I’ve learned from my SDA exchanges are a few common concepts.
  • None knew anything about the origins of the Bible, even though almost everything they believed are very strict interpretations of it.
  • None knew, or thought early Christian history mattered when getting to know who Christ was, what he taught, and what he intended for his Church to be in our Christian lives.
  • The same accusations against the Church was just repeated like a script: ‘Constantine and the Churchchanged the Sabbath’, ‘Jesus broke the Sabbath so we could know to observe it’ " Those who don’t observe the sabbath will have the mark of the beast" etc etc
  • Very few knew or even cared about what founder Ellen White believed, taught and prophesied. They only believe she simplified the Bible and that she was a prophetess. No explanation whatsoever for the prophesies that did not come true.
  • This is pagan, that is pagan, if you don’t believe my interpretation, you’re pagan etc.
It made me want to learn more about Ellen White and that whole movement during the 1840’s 2 things came to my mind when I learned more about her.

The foundation of her beliefs was the the Catholic Church went apostate, lost its way and that only they(the SDA) could correct the Churches mistakes. Furthermore, it was the Catholic Church that was in her mind responsible for oppressing all beliefs of SDA and other non Catholic Christians. So the problem in her eyes with Christianity is rooted in the Catholic Church.
The problem with her beliefs is twofold: She almost by implication accepts the belief that the Church was the original true Church, only that she and the SDA were the solution for its apostasy. secondly, at no time in America’s history was this a Catholic nation, certainly not during the mid 1800’s. There’s no way that the Church could be blamed for oppressing Christian beliefs, if protestantism was the dominant religion of this nation. It was Catholics who were oppressed in early US history and even during the 1800’s

The other thing I’ve speculated is after learning about great mystics of our Catholic Church. I believe Ellen White learned about Catholic mysticism as well. The difference between her and our Catholic mystics, particularly the venerated, blessed and holy women mystics was they lead the faithful to the Church, Ellen White used mysticism to oppose many Catholic beliefs and doctrines, she during her time was a modern day Montanist.

I pray for my SDA friends, when I ask them very tough questions, they trip and fumble with many of their answers. Their doctrines are very very difficult to defend, reasonably, historically, and faithfully. With all the information available today, they will have more questions they never had to answer in the past. If you know anyone SDA, encourage them to seek the Truth, never be afraid of what it will reveal.

That’s GREAT.
And, there SHOULD be a lot more reverence. At mass, Jesus is really and truly present.
👍

Well, yes and no.
There are quite a few OT books out as individual books.
I know that they have:
Genesis
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon
Job
Daniel
Exodus

I think that the NT as a kindle book is a GREAT bargain.

I’d also recommend the Navarre series. Unfortunately, it’s not available in e-book format.

They DO have the entire OT, albeit in 7 volumes. They have the NT, of course.
