Former Vatican Ambassador Won’t Speak at Notre Dame Over Obama Controversy

South Bend, IN – Former Vatican ambassador Mary Ann Glendon, a respected pro-life advocate and a Harvard law professor, says she will not speak at the University of Notre Dame because pro-abortion President Barack Obama will be giving the commencement address the same day.

While one could, and ought to, praise her for her decision, this episode highlights the predicament in which ND has put faithful Catholics.

Perhaps, to ND adminstration, inviting Obama to speak (and to receive an honorary degree) must have seemed like a secular coup on their part, it does widen the gulf between faithful Catholics and those institutions which they had grown accustomed to thinking of as “Catholic”.

It’s too bad. ND rejected the wrong person and endorsed the wrong way of thinking.

I was kind of hoping she would have spoken and given a good “educational” speech on the evils of moral relativism. 😃 With BO and Father Jenkins as her captive audience.

But I am glad she has made this statement. We need to be as loud in our support of her as we have been critical of ND and Father Jenkins.

I, too, was hoping that she would do that, as well; could have been quite a “teaching moment.” However, I understand and applaud her actions; it sends quite a strong signal.

By making the letter so clear… and public… she has given a teaching moment. And perhaps it will be much wider in scope than a speach on the 17th.

This was not only wise, not only prudent, but very Catholic…yeah!!

.

I was just going to post this. I applaud her.

Dixie, it’s clear Ms. Glendon didn’t want to detract from the graduation ceremony by turning it into a political protest. That would’ve been disrespectful to the graduates who have worked hard to earn their degrees.

She did the right thing.

A very classy, Catholic lady, indeed!!!

I have several friends with children graduating from ND this year, and they are most upset at the circus this has all turned into, detracting from what should be a joyous day for graduates and their families. I know that they will strongly support Prof. Glendon.

Brava Professor Glendon! However, what I have read about ND’s response indicates that they seem not to care. It amounts to “Oh well, we’ll just have to find another recipient for the Laetare Medal.” 😦

I’m sure they can find some pro-choice heterodox Catholic who will be more than happy to share the stage with Obama.

yeah, Kmiec isn’t doing anything important right now… give him a medal.

First give him a chest to pin it on.

Story and her letter to Fr. Jenkins here.

A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.
Finally, with recent news reports that other Catholic schools are similarly choosing to disregard the bishops’ guidelines, I am concerned that Notre Dame’s example could have an unfortunate ripple effect.

Thank God that there are still some Catholics out there with a spine!!!

Former US Ambassador to the Vatican and current Harvard Professor Mary Ann Glendon should inspire us to stand up against this ongoing Satanic attack on the Church from within.

Elites like Obama have shrewdly used IGNORANT Catholics to promote the Culture of Death.

They are now using every chance to steal credibility by speaking at Catholic Institutions. These once glorious institutions are now mere pawns in the Pro-Death agenda, covering up Jesus name at Georgetown and giving out “honors” at Notre Dame from the modern day Judas’s, the dishonorable traitors of Jesus Christ!

We must redouble our loving efforts with constant prayers for their conversion and positive actions in this “WAR” as Bishop Finn has so accurately described it “We are at war!”!

We will all have to stand in front of Jesus one day and answer the question "Why didn’t you try to stop the murder of my innocent children?"

All i can say is “My sweet Lord Jesus Christ, i didn’t do enough, i am not worthy, Mercy please!”

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

“Satanic attack”…“IGNORANT Catholics”…“promote the Culture of Death”…“mere pawns in the Pro-Death agenda”…“modern-day Judas’s”…“dishonorable traitors of Jesus Christ”

I really have no idea how we could think that inviting the President of the United States to a Catholic University should result in such outrageous rhetoric, even if he does support pro-abortion policies. When Catholics spew such venomous hatred for President in the name of religion, why should we wonder why the world just ignores us as irrelevant or fears us as violent sectarians armed with a gospel of hate. I’m watching the beginnings of a Catholic jihad, fomented by a number of our bishops, and it frightens me.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

I hope that whoever ND names as their second choice turns it down, too.

Maybe then they’d take the hint.

If they make some “safe” choice (someone politically correct enough, that is), all it will do is cheapen the award into irrelevance, as has happened with the Nobel Peace Prize.
