The cancer forum that was shut down last year had volunteer mods and admin. Too many software problems, dealing with inappropriate ads from AdNonSense and time spent sorting out member profile difficulties.

Sadly, it seems that SM (sado-masochism?) has replaced the online forum.

It’s probably inevitable that the great reset will mean dismantling old models and starting from scratch. I remember back in July Bishop Barron was so concerned about the rise in radicalism such as the likes of Taylor Marshall and Church Militant (who much of the time refer to Pope Francis as ‘Bergoglio’), that a meeting was called with Catholic journalists to discuss what can be done. Perhaps the Church is preparing to call out sites that entertain radicals? I personally think it’s got to that point, at least in the US that the Church needs to step in and officially disenfranchise those sites. Not that I think Catholic Answers is one of those ministries, but its very hard to keep it out of open forums.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

The so-called “Great Reset” is a rather fearsome thing, if you investigate and ponder it.

No one gets to vote on it, except the elite. How’s their record in dealing justly with the proletariat?

LOL! That sounds like a plan! On December 30, we all post something so egregious that we all get banned, and the site shuts down in protest!

🤣

There was a pop culture website several years ago called Fametracker that announced it was closing. It turned into an utter meltdown, in part since it always had a very strict moderation policy. Even the owners posted that they were going to let people just go crazy for now and a day later it was done.

While that was interesting to watch I don’t really want to see CAF fall like that. 🙂

Really? This is the first I’ve heard of that. How does that work? Do they give the regulars access to the moderator account or something?
I think that we can assume that there are paid staff members who spend a portion of their time on Forum business. It’s pretty easy to assign a hard dollar value on that cost.
True. But if you’re paying those people anyways, shutting down the forums doesn’t necessarily save you any money.
This is our penance for griping about the “simpering young woman” ad!
I miss that ad. Now I’m getting ads to buy quinceañera gowns.

Sadly, online forums are dinosaurs equivalent to rotary phones, record players, tape recorders, VHS, etc.

Nowdays, it’s all about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat–I have no interest in any of these.

I will be sad to see CAF go. I enjoy getting involved with long conversations about topics that all too often, are banned in my workplace (e.g., politics, religion, marriage issues, etc.). And I enjoy reading posts by certain posters who seem to be well-balanced (or at least, good writers).

Our parish is “friendly” but we still have no real friends there that want to spend time with us (of course, no one wants to spend time with anyone during this pandemic). Everyone is always so busy. And even if we did get together, people don’t like to talk about politics and other controversial topics. The conversation is generally pretty low-key and “safe.”

Oh, well, time marches on. Sigh.

That describes perfectly what I have valued CAF for since 2010.

That, plus the Curmudgeons! 😠😒

Interestingly, I joined CAF in 2007, the year before life became very interesting. The 7 prayer threads which were filled on my behalf, I have zero doubt, are greatly responsible for my continuing to exist above ground level.

Best wishes to all fellow users in your future internet activities.

I don’t worry about conspiracy theorists doomsaying. This reset was inevitable and the pandemic seems to be the catalyst. When I read one of Francis’ very first books ‘The Name of God is Mercy’ and the anti mercy crowd were up in arms, I knew then that something big had to shift within Catholicism and that Francis would be part of it. If we can’t understand and embrace mercy, we aren’t going to be saved.

A modest suggestion: instead of closing down the Catholic Answers Forum completely, why not make it a service for paid subscribers ONLY.

I myself have been thinking about become a Patron but was undecided since I have some issues about the direction of this forum (a lack of content and focus in regards to the evangelization of our faith).

That said, I would more likely be willing to subscribe as a paid member to this forum if it only included paid members. I think the level of discourse would improve TREMENDOUSLY if this forum only included paid subscribers. (It would definitely flush out the trolls)

So Jon and Christopher, please consider what it would take (in a monthly subscription fee) and the amount of subscribers you would need to make this forum self-sufficient.

With a reduced amount of members in the forum (if it became a paid-subscriber only service), the costs of running and maintaining it should be less too.

Just a thought.
I would be willing to get involved with this if it wasn’t exhorbitantly expensive. I’m thinking in the range of $25/month? That’s a little less than a dollar a day.

I have spent more than that when we invite people out for dinner or over to our house for dinner, in a futile effort to make friends.

Worth it to have people to talk to besides my family and…that’s about it. I’ve pretty much given up on trying to make in-person friends–maybe when I retire and have more time and energy, I’ll have better luck.

Maybe the loss of CAF will get me back into writing novels–I created some pretty interesting people that often seem more real than the people I see all the time!

Feeling really lonely and isolated today (Thanksgiving Eve). This pandemic reeks.

Thank You, CAF. I sincerely appreciate all the years you have supported our online faith community. We have all gained so much from this, and it has enriched us and our faith greatly. I think I can speak for so many forum members when I say a sincere,
THANK YOU!

I also want to give my best to all my friends here at CAF, even those with whom we disagreed emphatically. I love you all, and I wish you the best in this life and onward. Hopefully we can all be debate voraciously in heaven, with Saint Peter looking onward, putting his face in his hands…

Now to get banned…Pi is three…!

Oh c’mon, where’s your sense of adventure?

Aren’t you itching to finally say what you really think of everyone here? 🙂

I was banned for life years back, two weeks after I had made a donation.

Never again !
