Does an archbishop publicly announce that a politician in his diocese will not be denied Communion, if we are expected to believe that politician will not be receiving Communion?
Well that is certainly wrong. Why hasn’t the Pope jumped all over him?
It would be interesting to see if the priest at the Church Biden attends let’s him receive Communion.

I’m glad you agree. As to your latter question, when those of us here ask a question like this here, we get “jumped all over” ourselves, with accusations that we’re judging internal souls and who are we to critique (or suggest critique) of clergy decisions.

It makes me feel sad to imagine. I won’t be watching, and will only see it if some news source insists on telling me. I thought I heard at one point though that last time the USA had a Catholic president, he abstained from Communion throughout his term? I don’t remember where I heard that though.

Mary in Heaven, please pray for us all.

Peeps:
I will be sad to see CAF go. I enjoy getting involved with long conversations about topics that all too often, are banned in my workplace (e.g., politics, religion, marriage issues, etc.). And I enjoy reading posts by certain posters who seem to be well-balanced (or at least, good writers).

Our parish is “friendly” but we still have no real friends there that want to spend time with us (of course, no one wants to spend time with anyone during this pandemic). Everyone is always so busy. And even if we did get together, people don’t like to talk about politics and other controversial topics. The conversation is generally pretty low-key and “safe.”
That describes perfectly what I have valued CAF for since 2010.

That, plus the Curmudgeons! 😠😒
RIP the Mudgies! Proud curmudgeon here since about 2005 (I think I joined shortly after St JP2 passed away).

We need to take the show on the road, digitally speaking - maybe set up a Catholic Curmudgeons facebook group or something?

Sadly, online forums are dinosaurs equivalent to rotary phones, record players, tape recorders, VHS, etc.

Nowdays, it’s all about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat–I have no interest in any of these.
I feel the same way. I deleted Facebook years ago and never did get involved with the others. I miss internet forums…I do like to go to city-data as it’s pretty active for a variety of topics and places.
I’ve pretty much given up on trying to make in-person friends–maybe when I retire and have more time and energy, I’ll have better luck.
You and me both, sadly…this pandemic has pretty much destroyed what little friendships I had with people at our church. Not being able to see one another regularly or have regular services has been a blow to us.

It’s been a great 9.5 years…I’ve changed quite a bit from when I first joined in Jul '09…cheers all! I’ll miss coming and lurking around 😦

Very sad to hear and see this happen. I will miss you all and the great information you have provided over the years.

Peace be to all of you - and maybe i will see you over at the other site.

Sure do wish she were still around to have a moment of prayer (both colloquially and literally ) with Joe Biden. She sent Bill Clinton grasping for the ice water to gulp.
There are plenty of people challenging Pres.-Elect Biden’s and VP-Elect Harris’ pro-abortion stand, but too many people, including Catholics, are so consumed with their hatred of Pres. Trump that they are willing to ignore Biden/Harris pro-abortion plans for this country and voted them into office. God forgive us.

Why didn’t they open up moderation to the users? Really going to kiss this site, there aren’t many sites that you can connect to other Catholics.

Why didn’t they open up moderation to the users?
It wasn’t entirely clear; however, it was implied that they didn’t want to spend time monitoring them. I don’t think they were happy with their previous user moderators either…

I assume the ones on Reddit r/Catholicism are volunteers as are the mods on Boards.ie (Christian forum isn’t very active though)…

It’s sad as this is one of the few places I get to interact with other Catholics anywhere (IRL or online) and I’ve learnt so much here.

It sure won’t do for Biden to go to the dioceses of Atlanta, Charlotte, and Charleston (SC) and expect to receive. I would certainly hope that these bishops — least of all the inestimable Bishop Jugis of Charlotte — will not “go wobbly”, as Margaret Thatcher would have put it, now that he will be (barring a miracle) President.

An explicitly, unabashedly pro-choice, practicing Catholic President, and how the various bishops will deal with this — now that’s going to be something to see. I’m kind of glad to see it come to a head.

How many will be, like Thomas More, “the King’s good servant, but God’s first”?

On a slightly different variation on the theme of this thread, is there any way to download one’s own messages “from the beginning of time”, in a usable format such as MS-Word compatible? There is a way to download into an Excel-compatible file, but it is cut up all to pieces, and would require writing a massive script to concatenate it all. I would probably be way out of my wheelhouse trying to write such a script. Isn’t there an easier way? (Someone please say “yes”.)

I don’t know how others feel about this, but I have spent many, many hours the past couple of years, writing in the service of the Church (and as the moderns tell us, "we are Church" — definite or indefinite articles, we don’t need no stinkin’ definite or indefinite articles!), and I’d like to find some way to preserve these, if only for myself. That’s a lot of time and effort just to watch it all go down the drain.

I’m so sorry about your job loss. 😦 I hope you have resources to have your basic needs met.

Do you think there’s any possibility that CAF would consider leaving the forums open until the pandemic is over (assuming that the vaccines are efficacious and make a difference)?

After all, one of the biggest crises with this pandemic is depression, despair, and loneliness, as we are all pretty much confined to our homes, a few stores (grocery), and our workplaces (if we work outside our homes).

CAF is a chance to be with other people and talk. I know a lot of people do that on other online platforms, but many of us don’t go near these.

I think it would be an act of Christian charity to leave the forums open, at least until spring when the weather is once again warm and pretty. The last few days here have been rainy, cold, and dreary–a perfect mirror of our dreary lives without music, theater, shopping, church activities, eating out, ice skating and other sports, and socializing.

Anyone else think that makes sense?

And perhaps CAF could itemize exactly how much it costs to leave the Forums open, and we would have a better idea of how much we need to give. I agree, I won’t donate money through an online platform, but if they would let me mail a check, I would do so.
I’m 100% for this and would donate! The timing of this is terrible! It’s so sad. I am pretty new here - I joined when I was pregnant with my youngest and suffering from a lot of insomnia. It was delightful to find other Catholics interested in discussing the Things of God. Naturally not everyone sees eye to eye. That has been part of the beauty of this place. There are also some really smart people here & I felt I was being genuinely helpful when I had expertise in a certain area and could answer someone’s question (got to still feel I was using my terminal degree in catechesis even though I would no longer teach Faith Formation in my parish due to Covid. It was kind of a lifeline for me during all these shutdowns.) It has also been meaningful to talk with folks around the world as we all navigate the various shut downs. I have prayed for you all!

I have to think money is not the whole reason this is happening. This is not the only forum shutting down. I feel we’re all being funneled to the Big Tech sites to talk where we can really be watched - Facebook, Twitter, etc. I have zero interest using those meeting places to connect and share my heart. They don’t lend themselves to conversation anyway - just to self-expression. Bleh. Honestly I’m really upset this forum is closing down. I’m joining that new place Homeschool Dad has been talking about and I hope to see you all there!!

I don’t know how others feel about this, but I have spent many, many hours the past couple of years, … That’s a lot of time and effort just to watch it all go down the drain.
I feel the same way about the many of my posts that have been deleted because of flags.

I wish we could somehow let posters who aren’t around much anymore know about this. I noticed, for example, that @Ridgerunner hasn’t been on since the election. I haven’t seen @Jeanne_S around recently, but maybe that’s just the threads I’ve been on. Has anyone seen @CilladeRoma?

This will be controversial, but personally, I’m glad… I’ve always found that being here steals my peace more often than not, and is, as it says in the letter “contentious and addictive”, and it pains me to see so many Catholics acting in such an un-Christian way, including myself. Unfortunately, certain more vocal users ruined what could have been a nice community.
On the other hand, I have encountered a small but sincere number of truly knowledgeable, respectful and helpful users, who have helped me to understand Church teaching on important issues, and to become a more well formed Catholic. I wish a space would continue to exist where I could communicate with those people.
Overall, though, I don’t feel sad. I think this will be beneficial for souls, albeit perhaps occasionally less so for intellects.

I am not disappointed to see the forum go. The sad fact is that the forum has become hyper-political over the years, and much less representative of our Catholic faith. Perhaps some of the overtly political posters on the forum will now seek out a political forum and post on the joys of Catholicism? 😀

I miss Brother JR for this reason.
