You did not answer the one about who burned Joan of Arc. Yes, it was an ecclesiastical court that found her guilty, but that court was made up of English clerics. The Pope reversed the decision and found her innocent 24 years later. The “Church” did not killer her then change its mind. Polical people killed her and the Church saw that.

I do not like to post from Wikipedia, but I will on Galileo

Notice that there were TWO issues. First, it was not proven as fact at that time and SECOND, it was against the literal view of SCriptures.

Galileo was not above taking a hard line and making stuff up to support it. Einstin noticed that as well. Look at what Galelio said about the tides.

Notice that the Pope ALLOWED him to teach heliocentrism as a hypothesis, not as a fact, as it was not proven to be one. Further, the Pope LIKED the man.

The attack on the Church because of the treatment of Galileo is bunk.

I am a left wing liberal non-practicing catholic. Yes Sir! and proud of it. I beleive if you check current statistics you will see I am in the majority in western culture democracies of my stand. Most catholics don't attend mass weekly. Western culture deomocracies such as Germany, France, England the Netherlands are fast moving away from Christianity. Just check it out. A recent Angus Reed poll in Canada indicated almost 60% of christians thats 60% of christians do not accept the creation story as taught in the Bible.......Check it out. 100 years ago 98% of canada was christian faith. Still a high number baptized catholics there but non practicing catholics are exploding there. The world is changing. People are using their own ability and knowledge to carve their own path. Christianity teaches you to stop learning. There is nothing else to know. No they are not moving towards Islamic faith. But Islamic faiths are fast growing in these countries through immigration. These are the facts.

Exactly, and I found the info on wikipedia.

It is another way the Anti-Catholic education system tries to make us look bad by rewriting history
The Pope apologized........he was wrong. Its good when someone indicates they make mistakes. It just took too many years. Your blinded by the catholic light. Thats sad.

It is another way the Anti-Catholic education system tries to make us look bad by rewriting history.
This is really something. We got this guy impalass who thinks that Islam is good because he knows two Muslims who are nice, but refuses to question Islam’s tenets when another cuts off his wife’s head over some disagreement.

Brushing aside all these tangent arguments, the irony still remains in a story of a Muslim who tried to be a PR apologist for Islam and created a PR disaster instead.

So all news on wikipedia is incorrect? All news on CNN, ABC, NBC, FOX etc is incorrect unless they only say positive things about the church. New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA times etc are all wrong when they print stories that are only postive about the church? Myself and the tens of millions of left wing liberal non-practicing catholics feel sorry for you.

Was the Church wrong in a matter of faith or morals? No. That is all that infallability protects. Sorry. There is no issue.

That does not make it right. A majority of Germans at one time blaimed the JEws for everything, too. The faith cannot be Majority Rule. It must be about what is right and wrong. I am sorry that you have issues with the Church.
Most catholics don’t attend mass weekly.
And sooner or later, the chickens will come home to roost

the day I give a rat’s butt what other people are doing as far as their own damnation will be the first day I start trying to teach them how wrong they are. Right now, I am worried about my own nation.
People are using their own ability and knowledge to carve their own path. Christianity teaches you to stop learning.
Wrong. Wrong, Wrong. Do you know me? Do you know my education level? But, let us take personal stories out of it. Google Albertus Magnus. See how CHristianity kept him from learning. No, Christianity does not hinder intellectual growth for those who seek it.
There is nothing else to know. No they are not moving towards Islamic faith. But Islamic faiths are fast growing in these countries through immigration. These are the facts.
I do not disagree with why Islam is growing in these nations. That much is correct.

Look, you are slightly off base on some things, way off on others, and correct on the rest. That much is true.

I will ask again. Did the Pope apologize? Yes or No.
If you can find an apology in this, more power to you:

The Galileo case had, of course, been long settled when in 1981 Pope John Paul II asked that a pontifical commission study the Ptolemaic-Copernican controversy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. What was the purpose of revisiting the controversy? As Cardinal Poupard explained in the commission’s report to the Holy Father, “It was not a question of conducting a retrial but of undertaking a calm, objective reflection, taking into account the historical and cultural context.”

In his report, Cardinal Poupard briefly summarized the findings. Referring to Cardinal Bellarmine’s letter of 1615, if the “orbiting of the Earth around the sun were ever to be demonstrated to be certain, then theologians…would have to review biblical passages apparently opposed to the Copernican theories so as to avoid asserting the error of opinions proven to be true.” The difficulty in 1616 – and 1633 – was that “Galileo had not succeeded in proving irrefutably the double motion of the Earth…. More than 150 years still had to pass before” such proofs were scientifically established.

“The philosophical and theological qualifications,” Cardinal Poupard concluded, “wrongly granted to the then new theories about the centrality of the sun and the movement of the earth were the result of a transitional situation in the field of astronomical knowledge and of an exegetical confusing regarding cosmology…(T)heologians…failed to grasp the profound, non-literal meaning of the Scriptures when they describe the physical structure of the created universe. This led them unduly to transpose a question of factual observation into the realm of faith.”

In his response to these conclusions, Pope John Paul II reminded the audience that in the relationship of science and religion “the distinction between the two realms of knowledge ought not to be understood as opposition…. Humanity has before it two modes of development. The first involves culture, scientific research and technology, that is to say, whatever falls within the horizontal aspect of man and creation, which is growing at an impressive rate. In order that this progress should not remain completely external to man, it presupposes a simultaneous raising of conscience as well as its actuation. The second mode of development involves what is deepest in the human being when, transcending the world and transcending himself, man turns toward the One who is the Creator of all. It is only this vertical direction that can give full meaning to man’s being and action because it situates him in relation to his origin and end…The scientist who is conscious of this twofold development and takes it into account contributes to the restoration of harmony.”

What?! Christianity teaches you to stop learning?

Excuse me, but our Judeo-Chrisian lands have the highest rates of inventions and innovative leads in science. Look at the muslim worlds. Until we went in and improved them they were stys of 7th century mentality. Look at Israel alone - they lead in science, prizes in science and you can hardly dig up one or two guys from centuries ago that are muslims who did anything noteworthy.

And some of those muslims who did something were newly conquered peoples that we see as time passes so does anything innovative coming out of those lands.

As for Church attendance, I agree it is abyssmal. The Pope’s own backyard, Europe, and he can’t muster up the clergy to bring back people into the fold. It is terrible. I saw the greatest falling away during the last Pope’s time. This Pope actually inspired me a lot more since he is aware of things that the muslims are doing. He is still trying to reach out, but he knows what they are not serious.

Vatican’s response to muslims request for peace

Liberalism used to have better connotations than it does now. Now the pendulum has swung too far left and they have gone into a brain dead state that appeases/apologizes for islam without even doing one iota of studying islamic history, their so called ‘prophet’, and its koran and hadiths. Instead they take the muslim version of it all and they are not even aware of taqiyya/kithman. they don’t even know that the koran tells them to deceive us.
  • Intentionally preventing unbelievers from knowing the truth-> 6:25 6:110
  • Intentionally preventing unbelievers from Understanding Qur’an-> 17:45-76
I worked for the UC system and have seen the abyssmal way they treat anyone who disagrees with them - throwing things, shouting others down, and supporting the indefensible. They used to be known for woman’s rights and now they just blindly accept muslim’s words and don’t make a peep out of the abyssmal treatment of women in islam.

Liberalism has fallen away. So, I wouldn’t be so proud of it if I were you because you sound more like the crowd that is from the farther left than the liberals of the 1960-1970s, or earlier.

You call us brainwashed. Most of us on this thread, and others, have indeed read the koran. Some of these people know the Arabic version of it. many of us have read islamic history, the history of jihad and keep abreast of current news.

Many of us have also read the Bible to be able to compare it.

If you want to do that type of thing then you are going to have to take time to read them too.

Can anyone tell me of any muslim inventions during this decade?

Or how about in the 21st century?

let me just post Israel’s accomplishments here since I have that already researched. I can research Christian advancements in science and patents but that will take some time and will have to wait for another day.
You wouldn’t have your personal computer as you see it today if it were not for Israel. The pre-islamic Arabs invented the zero and you would need to provide some examples to prove your point of their other accomplishments other than taking other’s inventions and making bombs out of them or using these inventions for their jihad.

. Yes there are people who hate the church. There are people who hate Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Atheists etc etc. I believe today most baptized catholics who have become little or non practicing catholics have so for several different reasons. Many catholics that break away are ones that were baptized as infants. They were baptized not to make the church happy but to make their parents happy. You become what your parents want you to be just like them. More and more today people are individuals in their thinking. They don’t want to be told what to believe or not believe. They use their own free will and ability through their own personal knowledge to decide for themselves whether they want to believe or not. Just the last few years there has bee a big drop in infant baptisms. Many catholic families are not having their children baptized. They teach their children the laws of the land right from wrong and letting them make educated decisions when they become the age of reason that will form their own personal belief system or no system at all. The catholics or any other believers in larger numbers that decide to become a particuar faith when adults are stronger in their belief today generally then those baptized as infants. I see it all the time.
There is a lot of discontent within the catholic believers. A lot of catholics believe Priests should have the option to marry. A lot of catholics believe women could be ordained Priests. A lot of catholics use forms of birth control the church is says is a sin. A large number of catholics do not attend mass.
There is not so much a hatred of the church as there is in questioning some of the rules. I myself often question the church. I believe its healthy to do so. We question everything else. The church has instilled a fear that you do not question them. Many catholics today don't care what the church says. They use their own conscience and live their lives accordingly.

A comment to the above post - don’t question islam too much or you might have a fatwa on your head or… your head might roll away from you.

Anyway, I found somethings on inventions that Christians did. I didn’t go into things in the last century because I don’t know who was a Christian or who was a Jew for the most part.

Some inventions by Christians
Medicine was another great area of Christian innovation. Sickness was regarded as a condition ordained by Fate in the Hindu and Buddhist religions: the sick were not to be disturbed. The Moslems thought that a sick man was impure, and should not be touched. In primitive areas, witch doctors wore devil masks, shook rattles and danced. Sometimes they achieved cures with roots and herbs; sometimes (as today) they provided poisons to unhappy wives or to ambitious rivals. Death and life were alike to witch doctors.
Only in the Christian cultures, during the ages of faith, did dedicated individuals devote themselves to tending the sick. Hospitals are a Christian invention; they did not exist before Christianity Their very name is Christian in origin. The dedication of Christians to the sick laid the foundations of modern medicine, benefited everyone in the world and are seldom, if ever, mentioned in histories or schools.

movable type

agricultural advances in Europe were pursued more energetically and carried farther than in any other region on earth. The individualism that rose in the West was unknown to all other cultures, and held repugnant in the ancient world.

Our students are not told that orthodox Muslims in the 12th century (then in the vast majority) decided that all scientific research was heretical and blasphemous, and had it discontinued. Nor are students told inventions in other parts of the world, in non-Christian civilizations, were sporadic and virtually useless, since there was no infrastructure, no societal acceptance, by which they could be incorporated and advanced.
Schools do not teach that before the European nations could send their ships, merchants and missionaries around the world, to explore the oceans and map the islands and continents, Christianity had a thousand years of development.
This is a hard one to research because we don’t put down the fact that a person was a Christian when the invented something.

If you are a Catholic as you claim to be, you must not have been paying much attention in catechism class. A dullard you say. All the money Obama has allocated are loans and their are records of this and it has to be paid back and companies have to show plans of how they are downsizing and changing their wasetful ways of the past. .Both sides of the Congress and Senate give a thumbs up! You must be an independant. ....Go ask GM or Chrysler. it has to be paid back, we know where it is. George Bush got the largest dump truck around, filled it with money and dumped it on wall street. Billions wasted. Millions used for payouts, bonuses and prostitutes. Way to go George. 3 cheers for Obama. Its obvious that democracy america has spoken. Its obvious you do not like democracy yet continually knock countries that might not have it. Confusing you are.

You don't like Obama because the church says he is pro choice for abortion. That old issue is long been debated and has nothing to do with running our great country. By the way I am pro life but not anything to do with the church.
Everything I posted above is true. George Bush is back in Texas still trying to figure out where the weapons of mass destruction are in Iraq. Over 4,250 americans killed and over 100,000 Iraqs dead so far. Thankyou George. Shock and Awe only shocked and awed the viewers who saw it on CNN.

I find it intersting how much you talk about the middle east. Lets not forget those that believe in Jesus know that he came from the middle east. By all accounts he would look like just like any middle eastern man except he didn't have a turbin. Many protestants shake their heads in disbelief with catholic pictures and symbols. Remember the bible says its idolitry. I know someone will post here with some written saying they can find something between the lines statement from the catholic church saying its OK. The sacred heart of Jesus picture depicts Jesus as a tall tanned Malibu beach surfer type guy with the long hair and blue eyes. Everyone sees what I see. In reality we know he didn't look anything like that but thats what they want us to believe. You can't fool the fooler. I believe its very important to get the story right. The whole story right. You will never see a picture of Jesus showing him wearing tassels on his clothing. It mentions a few times in the Bible about Jesus wearing tassels on his clothes like most jewish men wore at the time. The church wants to sanitize him not to be looking like he was a Jew. What other reason would there be? Many catholics go along with nonsense. He was probably about 5 feet 4 with big lips and big nose dark olive skin dark eyes and black hair. Whats wrong with depicting the TRUTH for a change. For some reason the church wants us to believe he is from California. Someone tell me I am wrong?

The church has done an excellent job in getting people to believe everything they teach. Remember the old carrot and stick trick. Don't believe your going to Hell. You believe it all your on your way to heaven..OK! ......Where is Heaven? No one seems to know, but many believe they are going there.

Churches take in billions of dollars, pay no taxes and every week ask for more money. A true statement. (LOL) Can it get better then that.
