Lord, please help Your humble servant Fr. Allard in his distress and agony. Please ease his suffering and help him to see the value of his condition, and to spread Your message to all that will listen.

BRIEF

Father Allard successfully concelebrated last Sunday’s Mass with the chaplain (who was pleasantly surprised to see him…[didn’t expect it owing to the gravity of his condition]).

He concelebrated again on Tuesday,and missed concelebrating Thursday. Yesterday (Friday Oct 30th) he was able to preside; with some added difficulty however. The notable thing about his presiding yesterday, was that he didn’t experience any difficulty while consuming the Sacred Species.

He has lost some ground physically but is proving to be quite a battler… I think the best word here is “determined”.

Today we’re hoping he is able to preside again.
There are some potential roadblocks ahead. I’ve already heard rumors of possible cancellation of the Sunday Mass for a month to limit congregating (in fear of the H1N1). At the Institute, unfortunately, sometimes during flu season , or if there is increased incidence of gastroenteritis a particular ward, floor, can be quarantined for weeks. One year - on several occasions Communion could not be brought to the sick (you guessed it - the Institute has become quite secular).

So we’re best to not look too far ahead and try to take it one day at a time [Matthew 6:34].

Today, we’re hoping he is able to preside.

First, if the institution can’t provide a place for Fr. Allard to say Mass,
is their **ANY WAY POSSIBLE ** that Fr. Allard could be allowed to travel to a nearby place (it could be someone’s home, a chapel, a church or even another nursing home (maybe a Catholic nursing home?) with a caregiver and a healthy priest to concelebrate Sunday Mass? In some cases, this might be very good and healthy for him to get out of the institution…even if only for 2 or so hours per week. What we did on many occasions for my dear Carmelite priest is to wrap him up warmly in a wheel chair and take him to the church. His vestments could be put on ahead of time, or, with help of the caregiver, put on with the concelebrant at the church before Mass. If the Mass is in someone’s home…maybe his family’s home? He can wear a stole.

When the church alter isn’t wheel chair accessible, there were three different options that we used. One was to ask 3 or 4 strong male ushers to lift the wheel chair with Father in it, up the stairs.

On other occasions when Father was feeling a little better, he was able to go up the stairs with the aid of two people and sit at the wheelchair waiting for him at the alter.

On other occasions, Father would be placed in his wheelchair at the base of the stairs on the side of the alter. The concelebrant would then at the beginning of Mass acknowledge Father to the congregation and also acknowledge Father during the homily. Alter servers were also very helpful and one would be by his side the entire time. During Consecration Father could either be given a microphone, or he could Consecrate from the side using his hands. At Communion, the Hosts were brought to him and he could distribute Communion from his wheelchair.

Although getting Father to Mass involves some co-ordination, the efforts are rewarded 700 fold by seeing a marked improvement in his health as well as a renewed Spirit and sense of wonderment on the part of all those who witness this effort.

In extreme cases, Fr. Allard could concelebrate from where he lay in bed, and propped up with a pillow, if possible, with a minimum of “two or more gathered”.

The most important thing is that Fr. Allard be given the opportunity to concelebrate Mass, no matter what obstacles befall the institution.

I hope this is helpful, albeit the suggestions that may require even more work. Please let me know what you think. If neither of these suggestions work, maybe there are some others that we could brainstorm about.

REGARDING COMMUNION FOR THOSE “QUARANTINED” TIMES

Set into place and now a team of “in-house” Eucharistic Ministers. I don’t know what the rules are in Canada, but in the United States by law, institutions must provide ways for patients in hospitals and/or those in nursing homes to have their respective faith needs respected and met. Hopefully the institution would be happy to help accommodate for a Catholic’s need to receive Holy Communion and attend Mass.

For Communion, ask the nursing staff of the institution if there are any Catholic staff members who would be willing to become Eucharistic Ministers to serve the needs of their Catholic patients/residents even when they are quarantined. More than one would be great. In fact, as many as possible would be great! That way, the Eucharist could be made available to anyone at anytime. A special tabernacle or even the small gold box used to distribute Sacrament of the Sick (I can’t remember it’s official term just now) could be put in a special place along with the small instruction booklet for distribution.

Also, during Mass, ask the residents themselves as to who would be willing to become a Eucharistic Minister. (Sometimes a “Call to Arms” can have a very healthy effect on any given population.) Lastly, in case of emergency, the only real requirement that one must have to be able to distribute Communion is that one is Catholic. All that would be needed in a quarantine situation is to give a quarantined Catholic the Hosts and the small instruction booklet to distribute to the others who are quarantined.

For Mass—
I suggest there be two Masses. One for those quarantined and the other for those who are not quarantined. Another suggestion is to have Mass over an in-house cable television system. Another suggestion is to have Mass in one room and have Eucharistic Ministers and an audio system in another room for the quarantined (kind of like the old fashion “crying room”). Having NO Mass is not an option. Just tell the institution that taking away a Catholic’s ability to go to Mass and/or receive the Sacraments is worse than taking away a patient’s needed medication.

If you don’t have the time or wear-with-all to deal with the institution, let me know and I’ll see what I can do to help out myself from here in Wisconsin.
