Actually the chaplain started it.

The chaplain serves at the pleasure of the leaders of the House.

He started inserting his own “Jesuit” views.

Glad to see him go. Maybe he can get back to work at a soup kitchen or little parish that needs a priest to provide the Sacraments.

America magazine? Come on. Fake news source; obvious bias. Tendentious writing.

Not his “Jesuit” views (whatever that means :roll_eyes: ).

The recognition that all people have merit and are deserving of consideration and fair treatment is theological. It’s not just Catholic either. That particular sentiment is found in all the Abrahamic religions and a large swath of the Eastern religions too.

Ugh, it was a PRAYER it reflected generic beliefs about “God”. That’s the job.

A prayer with a directed nudge isn’t a prayer.

Prayer is sincere conversation with God; not virtue signalling.
 
You and I must be saying different prayers… Lately, I’ve been delving into the LOTH and the Rosary. Lots of virtues referenced in each…
 
Here’s the prayer quoted in the article–it seems crafted specifically to avoid “picking sides.” Do Republicans intend for their proposed tax laws to serve the common good or to make it so there are winners and losers, where some struggle and some succeed? I guarantee they would say the former. In fact, the debate in Congress should be about how to best achieve that goal so it makes sense to pray for that outcome.
“As legislation on taxes continues to be debated this week and next, may all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle,” Father Conroy said on Nov. 6, 2017. “May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans.”

Please define ‘Jesuit views’…

America presented the information: A Catholic priest ministering to the legislators called for inclusion and respect for all, as Jesus would have.

Speaker Ryan and others felt he crossed a line.

Perhaps the best solution is to not have a chaplain in the Capitol building. Obviously, the Majority only want to hear something other than the truth.

I think you misunderstand the role of the Chaplains. They almost always raise issues of virtue in their prayers.

Perhaps you don’t want there to be any chaplains at all? Seems an odd position for a Catholic to stake out.
 
In my uneducated view, both sides of the aisle could do with a little more virtue.
 
Chaplains shouldn’t raise or take particular positions, issues which to House members are clearly understood and recognized. We don’t have a full understanding of the bills and language and terms being used in debates and so for.

Clearly he crossed the line.

These chaplains don’t serve us…they serve the House members.

We should respect the authority that Speaker Ryan, a Catholic by the way, and his majority members have in this matter.

We don’t get a say. And neither does the left leaning America.

Nah. Ryan got his knickers bunched up because the chaplain prayed a prayer suggesting they all act like human beings.

Yes, let’s “care” for people by using the force of government to take from others and claim credit for helping.

That’s not what Jesus taught.

Oh, and so the Democratic Party finally decided to stand-up for a Catholic only because a Republican did something.

I think the Democrats are more interested in undermining Paul Ryan and winning back the House than they are about the welfare of our priest----and I hope our priest can see that!

This whole thing is just sickening.
 
Objecting to that prayer would be an admission that the Republican tax plan was not intended to serve the common good. The whole point of government is to serve the common good.

That being said, I am under no illusion that the Democrats are jumping all over this for anything other than political opportunism.

I’m not objecting to the prayer on the grounds of free speech. I’m tired of seeing people fired over different viewpoints. Speaker Ryan botched this, but probably doesn’t care as much as he seems to think the GOP majority in the house is doomed and he’s quitting this cycle.

Most certainly. They’d have more credibility if they took Catholic teaching on life issues more seriously.
