If you are willing to charitably give one brother the benefit of the doubt, why apply a different standard to another?
There is assumption that I am not . All I have said is that I find it troubling all of his materials have been purged when all that is happening is an investigation at this point.

Im sorry that I havent been more clear as to what is troubling to me.

He isn’t accused of anything illegal. Even if it is true, is there really any reason to make this public? I had always assumed that if a priest had committed the sin of fornication it would be handled privately.
Maybe, but Fr. Corapi is prety high profile in the Catholic world. I think what you’re saying would more likely be the case for your everyday parish priest. Not one who’s all over the Catholic media. I think keeping it under wraps would have back-fired bigtime, personally. I think he’s just trying to put it all out on the table because he knows that it would have leaked eventually.

Definitely a plus here. So much going on in the world that this is not showing up in the mainstream media. More of a blip here on CAF. Not too much in Catholic media either. It’s has a very limited audience who is interested in it 👍

We don’t know what he has been accused of, what investigation has been completed, what other information may be available to which we are not privy, what other options were considered, or why those in authority decided that these steps were required or justified. Just as charity requires that we avoid premature judgment of Fr. Corapi, charity also requires that we not judge the actions of those charged with handling the situation–particularly as we don’t have all the facts.

He isn’t accused of anything illegal.
From Fr Corapi’s website, “* a former employee sent a three-page letter to several bishops accusing me of everything from drug addiction to multiple sexual exploits with her and several other adult women*”.

Drug addiction can be illegal behavior. Also we do not know anything other than it is claimed he had sexual “exploits” with several adult women. If these women were in counseling with him then it could be illegal.
Even if it is true, is there really any reason to make this public? I had always assumed that if a priest had committed the sin of fornication it would be handled privately.
It was Fr Corapi who made this public.

An oddly apropos time of the year for Fr. Corapi to suffer this trial. I know his celebrity status is not to be compared to Christ, but this does call to mind for me the betrayal and arrest of Jesus and on a more human level what doubts some of the disciples may have had, and second guesses about Christ. Of course that is where the comparison ends.

My prayers are with Father Corapi and the woman involved.

I do know this much, whatever the outcome, Fr. Corapi has taught me some very solid theology, especially on Purgatory and that will not be affected by this no matter what the outcome.👍

p.s. someone asked earlier about his homily after the administratibve leave. I am very certain priests can celebrate Mass in any place and at any time, even private Mass, so I gather his homily is from that or he may still be allowed to say Mass and be on Administrative leave from the business side of things.

It was Fr Corapi who made this public.
No. He is in public ministry and he has to explain why he is on administrative leave. I don’t understand why this couldn’t be handled more discreetly. The only charitable explanation is that the accusations are credible.

I don’t feel the need to know about my priests addictions or sexual exploits. I want to know if he is a danger to my children but I couldn’t care less about what he does on his own time.

EWTN’s statement regarding the situation.

Dear Family: This past weekend EWTN became aware that Fr John Corapi had posted a statement on his website indicating that he was being placed on administrative leave. The facts related to this troubling situation are outlined by Fr John himself in his website statement at www.fathercorapi.com . We join Fr. John in asking all our family to not only pray for him but for all who may be involved. As a result of this evolving story EWTN has deemed it prudent to place Fr. John’s TV and Radio programs “on leave” as well, pending the resolution of this situation. We take this step reluctantly and hope for a speedy resolution.

As Fr. Corapi always said, we are in a war, and Satan and his minions are excellent tacticians. A good tactic in war is to snipe the officers. I would be surprised if Fr. Corapi is surprised at this attack on his good name, and his ministry. Shocked, perhaps. But not surprised. It was to be expected, I believe. The late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen used to say that whenever there is a strong effort on the part of the Holy Spirit, there is also a strong effort on the part of the demonic to counter that effort. That’s the battle we wage!

I hope the Church can finish up its investigation very quickly so that we can get Fr. Corapi back on the battle front! And maybe he can use this time as a brief rest and come back even more energized! I’m praying for him, in the meantime! And, I am praying for the woman who accused him, that she may repent of her error.

Can you show any other source for the information that Fr Corapi is on leave that predates Fr Corapi’s comment on his website?

Fr Corapi is the one who make this public information. No one else released this.

Again, it was Fr Corapi that released this information to the public.

There are any number of ways he could have released this. He could have just said that he was taking time off, he could have said that he has been placed on leave (by the way I have not found anything in Canon Law that is called “administrative leave”) without giving the details of what the former employee claims he did.

All of his 2010 talks he did talk about this. Turns out it happened to him. He was in trouble before when a lady claimed him of raping her from Milwaukee, turns out the lady claimed he jumped out of the television and did it. (seriously) He was stressed out for months over that and it caused him great stress. What happened to the lady who made the claim? nothing. All of his most recent talks though spoke about the attack on the priesthood and the things he had to go through etc. I find it kinda typical that this would happen, and to be honest with a zero tolerance policy, this isn’t the last time either. I personally think there needs to be a new policy for this. If I don’t like the way you look or your face I can simply write a few letters and you get the boot and have all kinds of stress whether you are popular or not doesn’t matter. I feel that’s the reason why we don’t hear people preach the way he does because of that fear. It was only a matter of time until Corapi got the boot and I think he knew this all along. People are sue happy today and it doesn’t matter if you are innocent. If someone doesn’t like you there’s nothing from stopping them from filing a claim against you just to stress you out. This will happen to many many more priest’s in the next few years. It seems to be happening more in our times then ever. Fr. Corapi won’t be the only priest this happens to, I’d bet on it…

Well yes he could have handled this in many different ways but I believe that would have only served to fuel speculation. And any time there is a priest put on “administrative leave” you know what people will assume. I would rather come out and say I am being accused of being a drug addict and a fornicator than allow people to assume the worst about me.

Folks,

Let us have clear minds here. There are really two real options here:
  1. Father Corapi commited a grave sin, yet he did not commit an illegal act.
  2. Father Corapi is being wrongly accused.
In both cases a huge overreaction is taking place. IMO.

Thank you for posting this. It seems EWTN is merely trying to both be charitable and handle the matter with propriety.

Thanks for posting this. Glad they made a statement. 👍
Sounds like they were unaware too, until someone pointed to his website.

Had this happened ten years ago, I doubt EWTN would make such a move. It is a clear overreation because even if FC did those things, they are sinful, but not illegal. His teachings and writings and videos should not be deemed false if he did commit sinful acts.

However, every charge aimed a Priests today always results in overreation and a wife spread assumption of guilt.

It is just how things are today and Priests have a very, very heavy cross to bear.

We don’t know exactly what is being alleged. The woman was an employee so she may be claiming sexual harassment (a crime). Drug addiction could also involve illegal actions. We simply don’t know. Placing someone facing these allegations on leave is SOP for many organizations.

Even if not crimes, the alleged behavior would certainly give scandal. EWTN is wise to distance themselves until things are investigated.

It depends on exactly what the woman’s sexual impropriety claims are. She was an employee so she may be claiming sexual harassment (a crime). Drug addiction could also involve illegal actions. We simply don’t know. Placing someone facing these allegations on leave is SOP for many organizations.
Is there anyway to protect yourself from this in today’s society? Even you yourself?

Short of never being out of sight of someone, I don’t think so.
Do you personally think it would be best to simply live a life of contemplative prayer (hidden) instead of being preacher (seen) and known to people who can simply accuse you?
