Fr John Corapi has Announced in a Video Message that he is Leaving the Priesthood

Maybe, maybe not. We have another example of Mother Angelica who let lay people run EWTN because the hierarchy there was not happy about her and her ‘conservatism’…her run-in with the bishop, etc etc etc…ask Raymond Arrioyeo. This is repeated history…

Actually the full quote is “Pray for Fr Corapi and all accused priests. And pray for their accusers too.” 👍

I wanted to remind everyone that not only has EWTN suffered after this crisis, but tornados ripped apart central Alabama and doubtless some of EWTN’s employees have had damage to their homes etc. from this.
This has been a hard year for EWTN so far.

Those would not understand there is no connection at all because they don’t understand science let alone political stands.

This is heartbreaking. I found my way back to the Church almost accidentally when EWTN happened to be included in a cable package we wanted. Mother Angelica and Father Corapi got me into a confessional and were both major factors in my wife’s conversion from Judaism.

We have purchased Father Corapi DVDs. His powerful sermons on Mary (“our Mother wears combat boots”) inspired us to the pray the Rosary more and we do a daily devotion to the Blessed Mother.

My first reaction was to assume that a liberal Bishop was attempting to silence a powerful, outspoken Evangelist for the Magisterium of the Church. But I had made that unjust assumption in Father Thomas Euteneur’s case and will not do so again.

I fear that there is a real danger of Father Corapi’s leaving the priesthood creating more dissention and distrust between the faithful and our, for the most part, wonderful Bishops. The last thing the Church needs at this point.

As sure as I am that Father Corapi would have been man enough to admit his guilt if the allegation were true, like others I find the whole way he has gone about this odd and unsettling. There are a lot of unanswered questions.

I believe that the best thing those of us who have so greatly admired Father Corapi can do at this point is to pray for John Corapi and pray for the Church.

I'm not sure how that applies to a cleric under the vows of obedience to his order?  Whatever the Holy Spirit wills He confirms through the authority of His Church.  If Fr. Corapi is truly being called into an alternate form of ministry, and he has not sought to be released from his vows, then surely his superiors will confirm this?

Yes, of course. However, his letter stating his inability to continue as a member of the community was pretty clear.

They are calling him to come home to live in community, which would mean he has to give up his private residence, and solitary lifestyle. This does not seem to fit with what he believes he is called to do.

Does he also have to give up his money? Priests are allowed to have money.

I don’t know enough about Father Corapi’s situation to do more than ask that question.
My priest is able to have his money.

He is able to explain to me why he can.

If Father Corapi could be as transparent, that may help everyone understand things better.

Less so on the person/case (your suggestion)–I meant the form of priesthood.

Although absolutely I agree with your last point.

Fr. Sheehan said that under SOLT’s new(ish) constitution, the priests in the society donate all their earnings to the religious society, and they in turn receive an allowance. A very few priests who joined SOLT before this new constitution were allowed to be “lone wolves” but Fr. Sheehan indicated the Society was working to incorporate all these into the fold of their new order which imposes more obligations to the religious order’s authority.

Considering all that’s happened, I’m thinking SOLT wishes they had set up their new constitution and required all previous priests to submit to it sooner rather than later.

Since Fr. Corapi has resisted bending to the new constitution thus far, perhaps he could come to some sort of a compromise with SOLT were he to leave his residence and join into the religious community. Perhaps keep his $1-2 million or so and property, but turn over all future proceeds from the sale of his materials??

But it seems a moot point - the community has been asking him to join them for about 3 years, and Fr. just doesn’t seem interested. He said in his last post that to stop preaching in public would be to “die” and he wasn’t ready to die. Oddly, at one time he claimed to hate his public life and wished he could live in solitude and quiet.

That puts this in a better perspective for me.

Thank you for that information, it helps me try to make some sense of a sad situation.
