Well when Father Pfleger was going through his scandal- and certainly making less-than- ideal decisions, he was called all kinds of names.

I think we should be charitable to ALL priests but why, with Fr. Corapi, is there more emphasis on putting on the kiddie gloves?

Again, I think we should be gentle with all priests. I’m just pointing out the inconsistency.
I guess you will have to find somebody who treated these two priests inconsistently and ask them. I’m with you all clerics should be treated with a level of respect, due to their office.

I think there is undue speculation from all directions going on here. The people involved appear to be reading these threads and blogs.

You stole my whole post! 😃

No, seriously, on the drive home I was thinking about this latest news, and you said exactly what I wanted to say. 👍

I will only add that I saw John Corapi as a living Prodigal Son. He has been a target for a long time. Just my opinion here, but there seem to be people who register at Catholic forums just to bash him and spread innuendo under the guise of ‘concern,’ and they are legion. Who and what does this type of ‘concern’ serve?
A lot of people are, legitimately, concerned. Some people are using this situation as an opportunity to be outright nasty, but I’m not talking about them. Anyone who is remotely critical or baffled or confused by the contradictions in this case and posting about it on Facebook are attacked by a small group of extremely hostile “fans” who seem to think that anything other than fawning praise is “uncharitable” and “hateful”. Father Corapi taught me that confirming anyone in their sin is never charitable. I’m not saying that he’s sinned…I can’t know that…but his judgement is off and he’s contradicting himself all over the place. Father also said that the worst thing people can do in the face of evil is to be silent. (Again, not saying Father is evil…just trying to make a point).

Father also talked about how the priesthood was the most important thing in the world to him. That being able to confect the Eucharist was a miracle for an old sinner like him. He told the story of St. Francis kissing the hands of the fallen priest because the priest brings him Jesus. And now, in his second statement, Father says that all his change of status means is that he won’t be able to celebrate the Sacraments anymore, but that it doesn’t really matter and he never did much of that anyway. ??? That’s why none of this is making sense. This new persona and the old Father Corapi are like two different people. 😦

Jimmy Akin has a nice list of the Corapi events:

ncregister.com/new-information-on-the-fr.-corapi-situation.html

I just don’t undertand paying an employee not to talk and having them sign something when you are a good priest and running a honest company.🤷
jimmy akin wrote an excellent article. i recommend all read it. it is all very disturbing.
i find it strange that he was ordained under JPII and never really was a normal priest as far as having a congregation of his own and having the normal priestly duties. how soon after he was ordained did he begin giving lectures, followed by the media events that were sold on CD’s? i did not realize that he had a home in montana and did not live in a religious community. he was very intriguing to me, as a new catholic of only 3 years. and even though i never purchased any CD’s or books, i found him very interesting to listen to.
i cannot judge him, but i hope we all know the truth someday. the strangest thing to me is paying someone to sign a statement that they will not disclose information. i wonder how much they were paid. we may never know.

Oh my, now he’s threatening to play part of conversations with this woman…what an awful man…nothing she said or did was public…he should be ashamed of himself. That is not right. He’s out of control with his power and ego. I hope this doesn’t turn into a circus. Some men surround themselves with women and men that are needy or have weakness’s to play them up later, he obviously didn’t want her out of his life and if he cant control with money and contracts, he’ll go viral on the internet.

This is the man that said Mary our mother was with him calling his name and helping him on his path, this man had John Paul ll ordain him, lay his hands on his head and give him one of the greatest honors in the world…and he’s blogging under black dogs and pretending he wants to go to court but not before polluting the jury. I hope he gets the help he needs, even some ardent fans are starting to turn. If she is that sick it would be obvious to anyone, no need to “stone her”. I noticed one fan said, Father even alcoholics can tell the truth, can see sin…

I am not. I actually find retired Bishop Rene Henry Gracida of Corpus Christi interference and challenges to the actions of the current Bishop of Corpus Christi inappropriate.
Interesting. I hadn’t considered that before but it is a good point.

Pray for this man and all of his followers. I still believe God can use him to bring others to Himself, but not through Blacksheepdog.
Why not? Don’t you think God can handle it?

You’re joking, right?

A ‘normal’ priest? What is that? There are many, many different kinds of priests. Father has heard confessions, probably celebrated Mass, and fulfilled many other priestly duties. Why do you assume (or state where all can see) that there is only one flavor of priest?

AcClaire, he meant he hasn’t done confessions in a long time, the reasons vary but he didn’t have permission too because he didn’t belong to any diocese I think. He didn’t say mass often, no parish, don’t remember him on EWTN, he didn’t do baptisms and weddings and funerals, so he wouldn’t be missing much.

I thought when he went through that much to be a priest and then wanted to be alone, he liked the “monk” existence, that’s when he had his cottage with SOLT away from everyone. Then they asked him to do his first series of talks and the ball starting rolling. I think something clicked with all the money and praise, it’s hard to turn that off.

He never mentions prayer, Jesus, Mary, in his talks now, something is wrong and I hope if what he said was true in the beginning, not a “tale” he embellished, he finds some of that grace again and stops this.

I know she meant like “most” priests. You have parish priests, community priests, missionary priests, so many, others. I feel she meant, after so many graces, after his story of going through so much, to just give talks. not minister in other ways.

Everyone has a calling, she was just surprised that was his “end of the story”.

Yes. I think it is important for us to keep in mind that Father Corapi is/was oblige to be obedient to his legitimate religious authority. To advice him to the contrary and publicly criticize Bishops and the Church Canon Law system which is one of the oldest in the world world and especially under this situation - is truly rebellious, immature, and highly irresponsible. This is very short of declaring war against the Church and her flock in the internet and encouraging and advising very wrongly Father Corapi. Now, Bishop Gracida is advicing the faithfully to complain to the Vatican against Bishop Mulvey and the Superior of SOLT. Yes, we should complain to the Nuncio regarding Bp. Gracida interference with Church procedures and public criticisms of Bishops and Canon Law. I already have. I spoke with the secretary and she prefers a written letter versus emails unless the matter is urgent.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi
Apostolic Nuncio to the United States
3339 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W, Washington, DC, 20008-3610
Telephone: (202)333-7121, Fax: 337-4036

We the faithfuls are to obey the Church legitimate authority in matters. We do not know the details, we truly do not know very much at all. Bishop Mulvey has not given a statement even though he is being bashed and accused. We need to trust the Church authority. Follow the Church with a one track mind. She is guided by the Holy Spirit and will take us to good pastures.

Peace,

Abba

I believe these are voice mails, not phone conversations. Recording phone conversations without consent is illegal, so I highly doubt he would publish that. Voice mails are fair game since, by definition, your purpose is to be recorded.
Not necessarily. That varies state by state. In quite a few states, only one person has to be aware that a conversation is being recorded for it to be legal. Either way, it would be highly inappropriate if he were to place those recordings, be they phone calls or messages, in the public forum.

His trajectory was not that of a “normal” priest: a multimillionaire living the high life in California who became a cocaine addict, lost everything, became homeless, spent time committed in a mental institution, experienced hell as it were and was touched mightily by God’s grace, later on became a priest at the ripe age of 44. He’s a priest but the sacraments (matrimony, Eucharist, confession etc.) made up, by his own admission, a small part of his apostolate, he’s part of a religious order but doesn’t live in a community, he’s a multimillionaire (whistle-blower settlement), and owns a profitable company (Santa Cruz Media). Nobody here is in a joking mood.

I am curious what you think about (former) Bp. Gracida’s request that people to write to the papal nuncio about the actions of (current) Bp. Mulvey: abyssum.wordpress.com/ and the disclosure that Bp. Gracida has been advising Fr. Corapi all along–and was the one that suggested the civil lawsuit, which effectively stopped the investigation.
With all due respect to His Excellency, I don’t think writing the Papal Nuncio is going to do anything. I’m not even sure what authority the Papal Nuncio would have over the situation since its not normally his role to intervene in internal diocesan/religious/societal issues nor is it normally his role to intervene in canonical issues. There’s usually a Vatican Congregation for anything that Rome would need to be involved in.

The Nuncio can neither replace the rightful role of the local bishops nor exercise a supervisory function over them. He is not “the boss” of the bishops in the USA. Thus I’m at a loss for why he’d be considered the contact person for this…

“He who is without sin may cast the first stone”.

I believe it is his political views that has got him into trouble. I used to cringe when I attended his conferences. He was very bold. He knew he was going to “get it” sooner or later and mentioned it often.

This past July, with his preaching against socialism, I knew his goose was cooked, and he knew it to.

BTW, the blacksheep dog is a military metaphor.

Thus I’m at a loss for why he’d be considered the contact person for this…
Probably because due to his position in the Church, he has the ear of the Holy Father or at the least, someone high up in the Curia. I could be wrong but that is the first thing that jumps out to me. If he’s the Nuncio, he likely has the Pope’s secretary on speed dial.

thank you debraran. i guess i didn’t explain myself very well, but YOU did understand what i meant.

i admit i am only a catholic for 3 years and i still have a lot to learn, but, as you said, by his own admission, the sacraments were a small part of is apostolate. and i agree, this is all very serious. i am not in a joking mood. thank you for putting my thoughts into words better than i did.

Yes and no. His job is mainly to represent the Holy Father to the US government, investigate priests nominated for bishop or monsignor, and work with the local bishops on issues of concern to the Holy Father. He is not normally an overseer of the administrative decisions.
While Fr. Corapi is known to many people around here, ultimately in the grand scheme of the universal church he’s a just one more spoke in the wheel like the rest of us. The idea that the Papal Nuncio is going to go out of his way to personally take up Fr. Corapi’s cause seems to me to be rather far fetched. However, I guess, stranger things have happened.

But, let’s face it, when Fr. Corapi himself refuses to appeal his process to Rome then its highly unlikely the Holy Father is going to swoop in to his defense…

Please love the Church. You follow the Church. I am not against the Church, I am still a priest, just not ministering publicly. - Fr. John Corapi twitter update.
I am thankful for the first 2 sentences of the twitter post. Hopefully this will encourage the “fans” / “followers” who are disillusioned or tempted to not let this lead them away from the faith.

The last statement, however, doesn’t mean as much as some people are interpreting it to mean. All this statement does is reflect the reality (which, of course he understands) that he will always be a priest, no matter what he does from this point on. It does not give any particular reassurance that he intends to remain faithful to his vows, or that he will follow the appropriate rules about priests who no longer “minister publicly.” It doesn’t give the opposite information either. It is neutral. It simply reflects what we all already know to be true about his nature - he is still a priest.

For those who want to still listen to him and for those who encounter him without seeking him out (after all, we don’t know how publicly visible he will be in the future), we need to be able to make sense of whether or not he is “right with the Church.” We need to know - is he following correct procedures and rules for someone in his position? Is he going to be laicized? Is that different than simply not “ministering publicly?” Is one preferable to the other? Based on the answers to those questions, what are the obligations of faithful Catholics when it comes to supporting his new mission, either by listening, following, recommending, purchasing from, or otherwise funding it? I hope that these more procedural questions will be clarified for us by the appropriate church authorities.
