How could this possibly be a hoax? In these days of instant communication, the people concerned would know something had happened and would be quick to correct it. And what would the motivation of the hoax be? Would it be someone who backed the Bishop? Or someone who backed Corapi and wanted his order to look ridiculous?

Occam’s Razor - the simplest explanation is the correct one.
Ockham was a nominalist, and to some a conceptualist, which means his view of truth is whatever God willed it to be. God could make hate to be good and love to be evil. This is contrary to the Catholic view of the nature of things reflecting the true unchanging Nature of God.

The truth of something is not in its simplicity but in its relation to reality. Our reasoning and deductions are far from simple or simplistic, but this intricate complexity of deliberation in light of first principles and prior truths lead to a profundity that is simple in nature, since the higher the truth the simpler it is. But this does not transfer to “the simpler is more true”, which would make simplistic the ideal in place of profundity, which is not as a rule simple.

We have to look at the totality of the Corapi situation with all its intricacies and determine the value of each as it relates and as it is in union with what is true. Not an easy or simple endeavor.

GUANOPHONE!

Where are you??

You are BY FAR the most vastly prolific writer on this thread, and on the previous over-1000-post thread, always supporting the goodness and good intentions of Father Corapi. That’s nice - not just nice, but a charitable intention, one which you stood by stalwartly. However, it was not so charitable when you took to task anyone who suggested that things might well be what they look like. Which was not so good-looking. Well, now we know, they are, in fact, what they looked like.

So, what say you?

That’s nice - not just nice, but a charitable intention, one which you stood by stalwartly. Which was not so good-looking. Well, now we know, they are, in fact, what they looked like.

So: what say you?
Devastating, but sadly, as some have said, not entirely surprising. I have worked with hard core addicts for over 30 years, and it sounds like a relapse. It also sounds like it has been sliding in that direction for some time. I was concerned about the slurred speech on the announcement also, because I know that sudden neurological damage can set in when a person gets older after they have used heavily earlier in life.

I have been challenged by a little exercise that I was taught years ago by a Methodist Pastor. He taught us to take the verses in Corinthians and substitute our name for “love”. It is a very good measure of where I fall short, and I have had to try this again today, as I was quite nauseated over this news. It goes like this:

1 Cor 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; 5 it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Now the exercise:

1 Cor 13:4-7

4 Guan is patient and kind; Guan is not jealous or boastful; 5 Guan is not arrogant or rude. Guan does not insist on Guan’s own way; Guan is not irritable or resentful; 6 Guan does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. 7 Guan bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

The hardest part for me right now is the last portion, in bearing, believing, and hoping. May Mary his mother, who called him, rescued him, and led him to the priesthood, by the grace of God do so once again.

I worried about the slurred speech too but more because I had a friend that started to do that on the phone and she was a “closet alcoholic” at the time. It could be other things though.

I worry that the whole story was made up or greatly embellished. When I was pondering that a bit too long, was everyone taken in by the salesman (or at least many) I heard a faint voice saying, “It doesn’t matter, I am the truth and the light” Jesus story is the main one.

I guess that’s all the really matters.

Guan, its best to know the truth, right? The truth sets us free. The men of SOLT have been very wise. (a life of poverty, chastity, obedience, sacraments, prayer, meditation tends to invite Wisdom in to dwell). The misled can now pray for what is truly needed. SOLT has freed Corapi by telling the truth, as Corapi was a slave to his lie. It doesn’t hold up now; so he’s been released.

Corapi’s Black Sheepdog fantasy/fiasco was a MESS - completely the opposite of Wisdom. So now the truth is out and we can see the life Father led was too hostile to allow Wisdom a seat in the House of Corapi. It explains everything.

Guan, don’t you think the very best scenario would be for SOLT to continue to hold out fatherly arms to their prodigal, for this to lead to the final crash for Corapi’s dreams to be “somebody” and to stop chasing after the world and seek Heaven instead? For him to live in repentance and truly gain a life of peace and joy, supported in his journey by the good men of SOLT, and by the fine centuries-tried discipline of the order?

Oh, for John Corapi to crawl under The Rock, and live!!! :byzsoc:

May Truth continue to triumph, and may it triumph in “Father” Corapi!

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, March 21, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Fr. John Corapi, a much-loved priest in the pro-life movement, has reported on his official website that he has been accused of drug addiction and sexual involvement with several women. As a result of the accusation he has been placed on “administrative leave.”

“On Ash Wednesday I learned that a former employee sent a three-page letter to several bishops accusing me of everything from drug addiction to multiple sexual exploits with her and several other adult women,” Corapi said in a note on his website.

lifesitenews.com/news/diocese-confirms-fr-corapi-suspended-pending-investigation-of-sexual-alleg/

EWTN apparently has stated that his order found him guilty of all charges.

We must pray very, very much for him. 😦

I have to add a thought which I am sure SOLT is quite, quite aware of and they don’t need me to tell them – SOLT was at fault here! How foolish to let Fr. Corapi into the order and release him from following any rule! At least, it seems to me what they did. I only just found from this last press release that he had made a vow of poverty. But this will be a lesson for all orders, for EWTN, others. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Let us hope that the fall of John Corapi doesn’t just make the Church stronger but also brings him healing, too!

What a bombshell announcement today! Honestly, I still don’t get it. It’s only very recently that SOLT had announced that the investigation is frustrated (halted) due to the civil proceedings. As far as we know, nothing’s changed but somehow and very suddenly, SOLT announces that it is now able to prove Fr Corapi’s guilt conclusively without having to interview the complainant or the key witnesses. I guess the gloves are off now so I can’t wait for Fr Corapi’s response. I’ve a deep feeling that the real truth is still out there …

This news indeed is very very sad…😦
Just can’t imagine how vulnerable we really are against Satan.
Corapi was a great preacher.

(sigh) – for the umpteenth time, Fr. Corapi did not make a VOW of poverty. As he was in a Society and not an Order, he made a PROMISE, which supposedly is different to some degree. However, he was under obedience. And he was disobeying as SOLT had tried to pull him back into community for a few years. So, promises not vows, and still… obedience.

Also - someone with real knowledge of orders and societies has stated that Fr. Corapi was never really “grandfathered” in so to speak. When the Society decided to get its house in order and move towards a more formal “order” with living in community, donating all income to the communal good and accepting an allowance for living, and enforcing the promise of poverty, they had every right to demand that every priest who had more informal association under the founder to come under the new constitution.

Apparently, in both Orders and Societies, members are bound to obey each new religious authority as they take over and follow whatever demands they require of members. There is no formal provision for “grandfathering” in conditions for older members when societies and orders evolve.

SOLT made a mistake in charity - instead of demanding obedience early on, they kept waffling and allowing Fr. Corapi his independence that was granted by the founder. Somehow, it kept getting back-burnered. However, they are not to be blamed for Fr.'s drug use, co-habitation with a woman for some time, sexting with women, and other charges. To compare one to the other is ludicrous.

That the founder, now retired, and a bishop, now retired, decided to insert their advice and pseudo-quasi authority in the case only mucked things up. However, if our saintly JPII was fooled by Fr. Maciel, then who can blame these men for being fooled by Fr. Corapi? That Fr. Corapi was ordained by the same JPII is yet one more irony.

To Guano - I’m praying for you now in your pain. I must say that although you seemed to grasp at straws so vague that it seemed ridiculous, I do feel you were far more charitable and kind in your attempts to defend Father than most of his rather cult-ish followers. Even now, some “fans” are denouncing SOLT and accusing them of the same stuff as the “devil Bishops” (that is a quote from one of the fans).

If only one previous “fan” has their eyes open to finally see the huge stack of evidence, then I am glad that SOLT has decided to release such a bombshell on us all. I truly believe this was a tremendously difficult decision for Fr. Sheehan, and one he must have agonized over. He has been nothing but discreet and reticent up till this last press release. I do take him at his word that he was trying to save souls.

Father Corapi will be making an announcement Thursday.
I will be praying for all involved.

Guano–prayers my friend. I know you are in pain.

You are “fortunate” however, that you understand the sickness and disease of substance abuse/addiction. It is “easier” to be charitable when one has that compassionate understanding.

As I have mentioned in another post somewhere, I have a parent who lives with that monkey. Sometimes they are on the wagon, sometimes not. It’s a painful and painfilled road for them and all who love them. Myself included.

I’ll pray for you, for all of Fr Corapi’s followers who have been scandalized by this and all people and their loved ones whose lives are shattered by addictions.

:hypno:

Maybe just reread the SOLT statement?

And then if you are still concerned hat the brothers at SOLT may all be liars, read the rules of their order and decide if a life like this might make one’s life open to the truth of the Holy Spirit.

I do not think Guan needs any pity at all…and I believe she would agree. What she did prior to the announcement was the right thing to do. It was the charitable thing to do. I could care less about how many people ‘knew’ this was going to happen for they ‘felt’ Fr Corapi was so wrong.

Now in the new light of things, we must still move forward and not pat ourselves on the back at all. This is not about ourselves at all…not for a long shot.

So, Guan, I thank you for all the responses. You did this in charity and love for a priest, not just Fr corapi. You put much time and effort into all of this, and I, for one, am grateful. God bless you and your most loving heart.

Yes I was looking over these last night, and they were indeed so painful to read that I had to discontinue my task. These people need as much prayer as Father does. They have become factious and rebellious, and are just giving a foothold to the evil one. I found them difficult to read before SOLT published the corrections yesterday, but in the light of that, they are even more concering to read.

Yes. I think it must have been very difficult for SOLT to publish that, since they have gone so far out of their way to be charitable and tolerant of Corapi for so many years. I don’t doubt they are also weeping even as they try to protect the flock of God by publishing these facts. One has to wonder how many communiques they have received from the disgruntled “sheep”.

I also was wondering about what was posted yesterday, as to how these facts were established in the light of the non-disclosure agreements and stymied investigation. They must have been able to glean them from other sources, and though these facts should have been made known in the confessional, I know Father Sheehan would never disclose information from such a source, which means it came from other witnesses.

I earnestly pray that a contingent of those close to Corapi will go to Montana, put his dogs in the kennel for awhile, collect him, take him to treatment, then bring him to SOLT for a long period of recovery out of the public eye.

It seems clear now that he is indeed being called to that which he has been avoiding for many years, by his own admission, to “lie down and die”.

Or, maybe another suggestion is to wait and see what other real “facts” will be made available to us , while continuing to pray. It is so easy to jump to conclusions with the information (or lack of ) on hand.

For example , I don’t believe anyone actually said that the brothers at SOLT may all be “liars” so far … apart from the post quoted directly above . There are still more than two explanations possible, we need to see what shall be made available to us over time. Hindsight is 20/20.

My own views (which are continuing to evolve as reports come in ) to date , in reference to SOLT’s statement are as follows: I start by looking (given the minimal information on hand) at exactly what SOLT bases its findings on. According to their press release/statement :
SOLT’s fact-finding team has acquired information from Fr. Corapi’s e-mails, various witnesses, and public sources that, together, state that, during his years of public ministry:
So they state 3 types of sources: Fr*. Corapi’s e-mails, various witnesses, and public sources .*
  • Anyone who thinks emails can’t be fabricated … well, 🤷 maybe we should pray for them too.
  • As to various witnesses , anyone who thinks there aren’t a long line of people (enemies of the Church) who would love to help slander Fr. Corapi , just aren’t being realistic - he’s had a bullseye painted on him from the getgo.
  • This thing about “public sources” has me a little perplexed: If the sorces are “public” , then why don’t we also know about them ? Which in turn, does make Fr. Sheehan’s unavailability until July 23, rather timely . Usually when someone issues a statement, they stick around long enough to answer some of the obvious questions directly afterwards. However, if their intention is to break it to us more slowly and to try and shield Fr. Corapi somewhat , that’s a holy intention.
Now , none of what I’ve just said suggests in any way that the members of SOLT are liars, but it can suggest that the truth may still be “out there” . Let’s pray and be patient and see what info is made available to us.

As messy as this thread’s subject is , once that SOLT statement was released, the gloating has all but (except for maybe a post or two) disappeared from this thread …👍 God bless you guys .

I did find that Fr. Corapi’s voice on the video message didn’t quite sound as Fr. Corapi usually sounds (didn’t really sound himself) , and although it is called a video, it was highly unusual not to be provided with a video feed of Fr. Corapi making that statement … not saying the video was a fake - just a couple of observations, which could give rise to several more questions.

Father Corapi’s own words from a video I have here at home :

“You know, everybody messes up. But when a priest messes up, it’s worse… because he can take a whole bunch of people down with him.”

If he did “mess up” , the one’s on this thread "who could have been taken down with him" , are actually the ones praying for him . Let’s keep it up guys.

one may put it another way… to join his suffering to the Cross of Christ, submit his will to that of the Church and in humble obedience, live!

You’re suggesting that an intervention might be needed.
I can agree with that idea. I wonder if Fr. Corapi has
any personal friends who could avail themselves in this
way, esp among his confreres in SOLT.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that alcoholism is a progressive disease, and even if the alcoholic has been sober for years, if they go back out and start drinking again, the progression is rapid and obvious. I had a hard time understanding how that could be true, but have had it confirmed many times. An alcoholic can be sober for years, even decades, but if he or she goes out again, the disease causes rapid deterioration, as if it had never been dormant. That may be what we were seeing with Fr. Corapi.
