As Gates pointed out; any effective support of the opposition would require an act of war. Does anyone here really think its a good idea to get involved in a 3rd conflict in the Middle East? Is anyone in Congress willing to commit the resources necessary to fight such a war? Why should the United States get directly involved if France and the UK, both of which are drafting a no-fly zone proposal, are willing to do it for us? Letting our allies to do the heavy lifting, for once, isn’t a sign of a weak leader. It’s a sign of a smart leader under the circumstances.

The general populations of North African and ME countries don’t have any experience with representative democracy and have never read John Locke, Thomas Jefferson or John Madison, Most of them just don’t like their curret ruler and are hoping for a better ruler to come in their place. Their experience is will rulers, kings and sultans.

The thing is, muslims would rather christians/non-muslims would be dead at their hands rather than go over to “Satan”'s side. It’s in their Quran. Islam is the only religion-------everybody else that does is of the devil. And worthy of death.

The question here is does France and the UK have the necessary air power to hold a NFZ? It not only takes fighter jets flying 7X24 over an area twice the size of Texas, but also special anti-SAM planes with special radar detection and equipted with special missiles to also be flying 7x24 and enough of them deployed at enough locations to instantly shoot a SAM site when the SAM site activates its radar (after activating it’s radar, there re only seconds to act before the SAM site fires.)

I seriously don’t know if the depleted UK and French air power can do the job. That is why both countries are talking about NATO doing it. And for those who don’t know NATO = USA

The US cannot afford to do any more of the world’s policing. If there is to be any outside intervention to stop genocide it needs to come from other Middle East/Islamic countries and other UN partners. The Saudi’s and other oil countries are profiting hugely from the conflicts so let them step up and defend their neighbors and fellow muslims. We are/have shouldered enough of the world’s burden from terrorism already.

With the earthquake and tsunami in Japan we will undoubtedly be the world’s largest provider of aid once again. I’d rather see our limited resources go for disaster aid than into civil wars.

France alone could do it. The vast majority of Libya’s aircraft and SAMS consist of Russia’s leftovers from the 1970s. Mostly bombers, light ground attack aircraft, and trainer aircraft. They dont have the technical know-how to maintain their own aircraft let alone modify them for any effective defense against an aerial invasion. Most of their fighter aircraft aren’t even in flying condition and those that are had to be made so by European manufacturers.
