How come the church does not not talk about dangers of being a member of the Freemasons? Why is this not being adressed?

AndyZ

I think it is a grey area.

The freemasons (of today, in Amercia) are not an “evil” group. They are Chrisitian, just not Catholic. They do have some oaths they ask their members to take, but none of them go against Church teaching (outright).

Personally, I think if you are looking for a fraternial order there’s always the KoC. But the Freemason’s aren’t something to be “warned” against.

Wrong answer.

From Catholic Answers:

"Freemasonry is incompatible with the Catholic faith. Freemasonry teaches a naturalistic religion that espouses indifferentism, the position that a person can be equally pleasing to God while remaining in any religion…

**The Church has imposed the penalty of excommunication on Catholics who become Freemasons. ** The penalty of excommunication for joining the Masonic Lodge was explicit in the 1917 code of canon law (canon 2335), and it is implicit in the 1983 code (canon 1374).

Because the revised code of canon law is not explicit on this point, some drew the mistaken conclusion that the Church’s prohibition of Freemasonry had been dropped. As a result of this confusion, shortly before the 1983 code was promulgated, the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a statement indicating that the penalty was still in force. This statement was dated November 26, 1983 and may be found in 13/27 (Nov. 15, 1983), 450."
If you are Catholic, please be careful in your responses!

Excellent.

The Bishops and priests must educate the people on this. I knew the penalty was excommunication. I just wonder why they do not warn the people on it?

Actually, you’re wrong, Lider. The Roman Catholic Church officially forbids their members to join the Freemasons under penalties up to and including Excommunication, as Bishop Bruskewicz showed in Lincoln several years ago.

Are Masons anti-Catholic? Some may be, but that would be a personal problem, not an official Grand Lodge position.

Do Catholics join Lodges, in defiance of Church position? Sure. Just like they use birth control.

Does the Catholic Church hate Masons? Yes, they do.

I respectuflly withdraw PART of my answer.

This is a question I had asked a priest. And the grey area answer is the one I got from him.

I do still hold that the Freemason (of today, in America) are not “evil”.

Andy

This topic will become a big issue soon if what I have read on the internet is true. Dan “Da Vinci Code” Brown next book is suppose have Freemasons as one of its main subjects.

It does, and it will. I talked with Jim Tresnor, who is a Scottish Rite historian and author, and Brown gave Him a heads up on the new book. It has to do with Masons and Washington, DC being laid out in Masonic patterns. Masons are apparently the good guys. We are expecting a lot of publicity and inquiries.

  1. You’re obviously not high enough to know better.
  2. Freemasonry is anti-Catholic, has been from the start. *Ipso facto, * anyone who is a member wears the same cloak.
  3. Catholics who join freemason lodges are automatically excommunicated. No need for a Papal bull on that one. And you can keep your birth control slur to yourself.
  4. The Catholic Church does not “hate” Masons. The Church recognizes, however, that Masons are no friends of the Church.

Your first part of the answer is the right route to take.

Join the Knights of Columbus! It is a terrific organization, performs many works of charity and evangelization, and is very faithful to the Church.

Anyone joing the KofC quickly learns that Freemasonry is forbidden.

Its the spirit behind it thats evil, not the person.

Hi AndyZ,

Freemasonry is evil and has been the cause of most wars since 1738. Some of the wars would include the French Revolution, The American Revolution, the War of 1848, The overthrow of the Papal States, World War I and probably World War II. Pope Leo XIII issued an encyclical called Humanum Genus which is a scathing attack on Freemasonry. You can read it on the internet. I studied Masonry on my own for about a year and I believe that they are behind much of the destruction of our country right now. Here are a few books I’ve read and they are very informative:

Humanum Genus by Pope Leo XIII
Grand Orient Freemasonry Unmasked by Msgr George Dillon
The Social Right of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ the King by Fr Denis Fahey
Secret Societies and the Kingship of Christ by Fr Denis Fahey
Behind the Lodge Door by Paul A. Fisher

These books can be found in print. There are others. Behind the Lodge Door is a very good one to see what Masonry has done to our country. He quotes the congressional record and has other great footnotes.

May God bless,

James224

Well, I apparently wandered into the wrong place. In the interest of not being banned, I will now leave. 👋

BTW, Barrister, I’m a Past Worshipful Master, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, as well as a Former Catholic. The “not high enough” line is hooey used to excuse grandpa and uncle zeke’s membership by Anti-Masons.

If anyone has an actual question, I may respond. Going to rabid anti-Masonic books for unbiased info is like asking Ian Paisley to give you the true facts on Catholicism.

I’m an ACTIVE 4th degree member of the KofC and nothing was ever said about Freemasonry being forbidden. As a matter of fact, I was the one who did most of the ‘warning’.

Can you please expand on how Freemasonry is responsible for the American Revolution? I’m not disagreeing with you but I never heard of that before and would like to hear more about it.

Under the new Code of Canon Law, Catholics who join the freemasons are not automatically excommunicated. Their membership, however, is mortally sinful, and so they are able to be excommunicated.

There is a difference. In order for an offense to be automatically excommunicable, this would have to be made explicit, not implicit.

That having been said, I cannot for the life of me understand what’s wrong with being a Mason. Of course, I submit to the Church in this matter, but I would still like understanding.

I don’t see how joining an interfaith fellowship necessarily causes indifferentism. There are many interfaith organizations that Catholics can be a part of. Look at all the Asissi Pow-Wows and other ecumenical ventures our Holy Father has embarked upon!

If anyone can enlighten me, by being objective and not using undocumented internet sites, please do.

Sir Knight,

Supposedly, the masons are behinf everything that’s gone wrong in the past 500 or so years.

I’ve never seen a serious historian vouch for that, though.

When you get your *fifth * degree you’re eligible for training as a Jesuit Assassin. I completed my training last year. Our goal as Jesuit Assassins in the Holy Order of St. Michael’s Warriors is the eradication of a certain secular organization… 😉

I bet some people won’t get the joke. 😛

Spiri220. Are you still involved in Masonry? One other question for you. There is a bible on the desk [alter]. Is that Bible opened and read to its members.Do you ever mention the name of Jesus Christ in reading of the Bible to the membership?
