When you compare something like freemasonry to Hitler, you lose all your credibilty.
**So be it. **I am not worried about my credibility but about the soul of our society. The comparison comes from the fact that the *supernatural entity *behind both of their agendas appears to be the same. Neither one is a Godly one.

I am sure Pope Leo XIII was not worried about his credibility when he wrote such courageous encyclical.

How dramatic.

How did Pope Leo XIII get his information? Was he a freemason? Do you know any freemasons? Are you a freemason? Maybe if you want to find out about one, go ask one instead of babbiling on the internet about something your not familar with.

I am NOT a mason, but it boils down to respect. If you want oto be listened too, show a little. If you want to change minds, show alot.

I think we were separated at birth. 👍

And that proves my previous point. There are some Catholics who treat Freemasons the same way anti-Catholics treat us.
Did you read the Pope’s encyclycal that an earlier poster gave you the link to. The Church officially states that Freemasons are out to destroy the Catholic Church. You seem to be taking that lightly. I certainly don’t.
By the way I’m talking about Freemasons as a society and not individual members who have been duped into believing it is simply a benign and benevolent society!

It (Freemasonry) might have been something else in the past, but today, it’s basically a group of old men who help kids and play gin rummy at the lodge.
Correct essentially. You forgot pie though. The old guys really love their pie!

I will confirm this from a Masonic perspective. I’ve been a Mason since 2002, been Master of my lodge twice, joined Scottish Rite and been through to the 32nd degree. 4th - 32nd degrees aren’t “higher” degrees per se but are conferred to impart “more light in Masonry”. Anyway…each state has a Grand Lodge which governs activities of all Lodges in their state. So the link to California Masonic Code governs only masons within that jurisdiction. The Masonic Code of a particular state is not a controlled or secret document in any way. Here is the Washington (state) Masonic Code:

freemason-wa.org/Publications/WMC%202003-%2010.pdf

Many people who are outside the fraternity would like to believe (or propagate) rumors of secret things happening in the organization or knowledge only given to those at the “higher levels” of the fraternity. That’s all bunk. Of course you can believe what you like, none of us can control that.

Now, having said all of that I will also say that at the end of my term as Master (Sept) I plan to demit from my lodge (essentially cutting ties from that particular lodge) and cease activity in Masonry. I am not Catholic but hope to be someday and that will be a necessary step in conversion to the church. I have read most of many of the papal pronouncements against Freemasonry dating back to 1738 and agree essentially with those injunctions. I think that you can be an active Christian and a Freemason with no fundamental theological conflict. This does NOT apply to being a Catholic and a Freemason, as many popes have forbidden such association.

Believe what you like but get your facts right. The fraternity of today is NOT the fraternity of the 18th century.

And RascalKing, Catholic Mormon? I’d like to find out about that, we might have a few things in common!

Blessings,

Charles

Wow, you have a point! Now if we are to reject the warning of a Vicar of Christ in favor of your position, we also need to also ask:

How did Rascalking get his information? Was **Rascalking **a freemason? Does Rascalking know any freemasons? Are you a freemason? Maybe if Rascalking wants to find out about one, he should go ask one instead of babbiling on the internet about something he is not familar with. 😊

It all comes to respect. We should respect the authority of the Pope! :highprayer:

Why do you like to play with the bold font so much?

I have close family members who are freemasons. As I said before, I’m not one of them.

My point is that you all take the word of someone else and then listen to no reason. That’s exactly what anti-Catholics do. The other posts have just continued to prove that point.

On here, everyday, I see Catholics telling anti-Catholics to do the research, approach things with an open mind. Research it and make your own decision. Yet, a large number of these same posters refuse to do the same.

Do I take it lightly, yep! There are worse evils in the world than some old men doing charity work.

Think about it this way -

At some point in the Church’s history, some bad men did evil things in an otherwise holy organization. Is it at least possible the Freemasons had some bad men do evil in an otherwise good organization? I’m not saying it’s holy, but those little old dudes DO actually do a lot of charity work.

A Catholic shouldn’t belong to the Masons because the Church says so. However, it doesn’t mean that Catholics have to be so hateful about something they don’t understand.

A little background on me - my entire family belongs to the Masonic lodge (myself excluded, I left before converting to Catholicism because I didn’t enjoy socializing with little, old ladies). I know a thing or two about the lodge. If you want a civil conversation about it, I’m here. I won’t, however, get into a “I’m right and since you’re Catholic you should just agree” debate.

As I told another poster yesterday, this entire thing reeks of ignorance on both sides (the Church and the lodge).

Plus it’s been done to death on other threads. You can hardly go a week without yet another Freemasonry thread.

Point taken, to avoid any more exchange of ignorant opinions from both, ignorant opponents and ignorant outside family members of masons, let’s allow the Catholic Encyclopedia to give us a helping hand.
Outer work of Freemasonry: its achievements, purposes and methods
The outer work of Freemasonry, though uniform in its fundamental character and its general lines, varies considerably in different countries and different Masonic symbols. "Charitable"or “philanthropic” purposes are chiefly pursued by English, German, and American Masonry, while practically at least, they are neglected by Masons in the Latin countries, who are absorbed by political activity.
But even in England, where relatively the largest sums are spent for charitable purposes, Masonic philanthropy does not seem to be inspired by very high ideals of generosity and disinterestedness, at least with respect to the great mass of the brethren; the principal contributions are made by a few very wealthy brethren and the rest by such as are well-to-do.
Moreover, in all countries it is almost exclusively Masons and their families that profit by Masonic charity. Masonic beneficence towards the “profane” world is little more than figurative, consisting in the propagation and application of Masonic principles by which Masons pretend to promote the welfare of mankind; and if Masons, particularly in Catholic countries, occasionally devote themselves to charitable works as ordinarily understood, their aim is to gain sympathy and thereby further their real purposes… Learn more here: Catholic Encyclopedia: Masonry
I pray this helps,

Yeah, I’m not ignorant on the subject. I know something about it from both sides. But whatever, I just think you all are crazy conspiracy theorists. I couldn’t possibly explain my position any better than I have. Ultimately, I don’t care what you think. 😃

The term ‘Conspiracy Theory’ is a set phrase developed, popularized and employed by conspirators to ridicule those who are close to uncover their conspiracy to the masses.

ENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIII ON FREEMASONRY (Vatican Website)
  1. "The first warning of the danger was given by Clement XII in the year 1738,(3) and his constitution was confirmed and renewed by Benedict XIV(4) Pius VII followed the same path;(5) and Leo XII, by his apostolic constitution, Quo Graviora,(6) put together the acts and decrees of former Pontiffs on this subject, and ratified and confirmed them forever. In the same sense spoke Pius VIII,(7) Gregory XVI,(8) and, many times over, Pius IX.(9)…
  1. But, what is of highest importance, the course of events has demonstrated the prudence of Our predecessors. For their provident and paternal solicitude had not always and every where the result desired; and this, either because of the simulation and cunning of some who were active agents in the mischief, or else of the thoughtless levity of the rest who ought, in their own interest, to have given to the matter their diligent attention. In consequence, the sect of Freemasons grew with a rapidity beyond conception in the course of a century and a half, until it came to be able, by means of fraud or of audacity, to gain such entrance into every rank of the State as to seem to be almost its ruling power…
  1. There are several organized bodies which, though differing in name, in ceremonial, in form and origin, are nevertheless so bound together by community of purpose and by the similarity of their main opinions, as to make in fact one thing with the sect of the Freemasons, which is a kind of center whence they all go forth, and whither they all return. Now, these no longer show a desire to remain concealed; for they hold their meetings in the daylight and before the public eye, and publish their own newspaper organs; and yet, when thoroughly understood, they are found still to retain the nature and the habits of secret societies…
Candidates are generally commanded to promise - nay, with a special oath, to swear - that they will never, to any person, at any time or in any way, make known the members, the passes, or the subjects discussed. Thus, with a fraudulent external appearance, and with a style of simulation which is always the same, the Freemasons, like the Manichees of old, strive, as far as possible, to conceal themselves, and to admit no witnesses but their own members. As a convenient manner of concealment, they assume the character of literary men and scholars associated for purposes of learning. They speak of their zeal for a more cultured refinement, and of their love for the poor; and they declare their one wish to be the amelioration of the condition of the masses, and to share with the largest possible number all the benefits of civil life. Were these purposes aimed at in real truth, they are by no means the whole of their object. Moreover, to be enrolled, it is necessary that the candidates promise and undertake to be thenceforward strictly obedient to their leaders and masters with the utmost submission and fidelity, and to be in readiness to do their bidding upon the slightest expression of their will; or, if disobedient, to submit to the direst penalties and death itself. As a fact, if any are judged to have betrayed the doings of the sect or to have resisted commands given, punishment is inflicted on them not infrequently, and with so much audacity and dexterity that the assassin very often escapes the detection and penalty of his crime" (underline emphasis added)

Living proof why the internet is both hilarious and maddening at the same time.

Anyone notice that arguing with people who believe in conspiracies is like trying to reason with a taco?

Are you trying to use 'ridicule"? Good strategy! Are you trying again to also ridicule the Pope’s warning and his encyclical?

No, you’ve convinced me with your divine knowledge that there is a huge, world wide conspiracy that involves every single orginization from the “Masons” to “Wal Mart” that controls everything.

I see the light.
