I’m asking out of ignorance. Be charitable.

But what’s the deal?

I hear about FSSP, SSPX and I’m sure there are other acronyms (which ones have I missed?) What are they all about and what do I, as an obedient Roman Catholic need to know? I mean, can anyone provide a brief, concise explanation of what these various organizations/societies/fraternaties are about from an obedient Roman Catholic perspective?

Obedient to Rome?
In communion with Rome?
What is their general purpose or mission?
Sacraments OK and efficacious?
What else do I need to know?

I would like to go to an old fashioned Latin Mass but not to the point where I will go anywhere near anything which claims to be the only true church or the official remnant church or claims that the Second Vatican Council is the work of Satan therefor the Holy Father is not the real Holy Father or teaches anything contrary to the Catholic faith.

I don’t want to touch anything with the proverbial ninety nine and a half foot pole which aint kosher, know what I mean?.

Without throwing accusations around and getting all emotional, can anyone explain in plain english what the deal is and what I would want to stay away from?

Tim,

Very, very briefly . . .

The FSSP, The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, is in full communion with the Church and the Holy Father. By all means, you are free to assist at Masses offered by their priests and to receive the sacrament of penance from them.

The SSPX, The Society of St. Pius X, is currently having serious theological discussions with the See of Rome regarding, primarily, the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Rome has stated that it is permissible to assist at Masses offered by their priests and that your Sunday obligation can be fulfilled by doing so. However, their status within the Church, as of today, is somewhat irregular due their founders, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, ordaining four bishops without approval from the Holy See. A resolution of their status is very close at hand. Representatives from the Society, headed by Bishop Fellay, and from Rome have apparantly come to an agreement. The final declaration is expected some time this month.

No because everyone is going to have their own opinion and everyone is going to have their own bias, so this will just degenerate into a baiting thread, even if that wasn’t your intention.

A few salient points though the only people who think the Second Vatican Council was the work of the devil are sedevacantists, the FSSP accepts it interpreted in the light of tradition -which in their view means it cant have taught anything wrong- and the SSPX claims the same whilst saying that ‘in the light of tradition’ means that anything that can’t be interpreted in the light of tradition can be thrown out. The SSPX does however teach that the holy father can promulugate error, but in so doing don’t say anything different to Blessed Cardinal Henry Newman or St Robert Bellarmine or several other theologians.

As for whether they are in communion with Rome that really depends who you ask, the last word from Rome was ‘they exercise no legitmate ministry in the church’ but no one has stated they are in schism. Everyone agrees that their relations with Rome are not normal however.

As for their sacraments being licit that again depends who you ask, it would appear that Rome accepts the view that they are valid but not licit. You will often hear the argument that the sacraments that require jurisidction are invalid but no statement from Rome has said this and several celebrated canonists as well as canon law refute this position. The society itself argues that their sacraments are licit arguing from the basis of a ‘a state of necessity’ and ‘supplied jurisdiction’ but I won’t discuss that on the open forum.

The SSPX stands for ‘Society of St Pius X’ and is also referred to as ‘FSSPX’ in more official documents.

The FSSP or Fraternity of St Peter was formed by a group of priests who left the SSPX after Archbishop Lefebvre consecrated 4 bishops without a Papal mandate, its relations with Rome are entirely normal and so there is no controversy from Rome about it although obviously there is ill feeling amongst the SSPX community.

And in the interests of full disclosure I will say that yes I do attend a SSPX chapel but I’ve tried to be as unbias as I can.

Just thought of this

You want to stay clear of the SSPV, The Society of St. Pius V. They are definately not in communion with the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, and the See of Rome.

Since every priest now has the right to celebrate the Tridentine Mass, how about requesting it of your priest or others in your area? The FSSP is fine (SSPX is not), but if more people request the EF (Tridentine) Mass from “regular” parish priests, we can all go a long way to making the EF more available!

SSPX priests celebrate Mass validly but illicitly. However, their celebration of the Sacrament of Confession is both illicit and invalid (except in danger of death) in light of the fact that priests need to have faculites in order to validly celebrate Reconciliation (except in danger of death).

The FSSP is in communion with the Church and celebrates both sacraments validly and licitly.

FSSP is totally in communion with the Church and in good standing 🙂

another society of priests that celebrate the Latin Mass and are in communion and good standing with the Church, is the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest 🙂

there are also some diocesan Latin Masses as well

their mission is to offer the Sacraments according to the 1962 missal and yes they are valid

Oh, this is good to hear in regards to the SSPX! They would be an asset to the Church once their status is regularized.

The FSSP(Priestly Faternity of St. Peter) have perfectly normal relations thither Rome and the pontif. Their ministry is to traditional Catholics who desire the TLM. They provide the traditional sacraments and have two seminaries where they instruct priests and seminaries in the TLM. They emerged from the SSPX after the illicit(but not invalid) consecration of the four bishops in 1988.

The SSPX (Society of St. Pius X) have irregular relations with the Roman Pontiff. Their order was formed by Archbishop Lebefer in 1970-71 over genuine concern over the contents of VII and its changes to the mass and sacraments. The society has disdain for the changes of Vatican Two and this practice the traditional sacraments. They have valid sacraments but practice them illicitly, due to the excomunication of Lebefer in 1988 over the ordination scandal and the society suspended state. They also serve the traditionalist Catholic faithful. Please pray for a return to normal relations with the Ponfiff for the Society.

God Bless and Ave Maria!

👍👍👍👍😃

I total agree, the Church could very much use those holy, traditional priests and bishops!

All you need to know, FSSP are approved by Rome, SSPX probably best avoided, SSPV definitely keep away!
