Hi everyone. Just thought I would stick my toes in the water here…
As I live in Utah & have spent 8 years in Arizona previous to moving up here, I see things a little differently than most… Simply because it isn’t covered as much in the east as it would be, say, in the Salt Lake Tribune…
First off, they will never be able to pin polygamy on anyone in this group, because after the first marriage - none of the other marriages are recorded by any public authority. They are “spiritual” marriages - and, I hate to phrase it this way, but let’s call it what it is - they are not married women, they are harems…
Second, the allegations of physical abuse will be very hard to prove. Can’t point a finger, if you don’t know it is abuse & any leading questions by child services will mean legal hell & Texas knows this.
Third, yes, you may ask: what is the difference between the FLDS girls being pregnant & underage, pregnant girls in the local high school? The difference is that the girls on the outside of this group are not (most of the time) having consensual sex with older men - men in their 40s, 50s & 60s. The girls in the high schools and on television are not forced, with stories of eternal damnation and hellfire, to have sex with men in their 40s, 50s & 60s… (How can anyone justify forcing a 13, 14, 15 or 16 year old girl to have sex by threatening, essentially, death & hell fire - and then get all up in arms if a grown woman in the work place is forced to have sex with her boss, to save her job?)
Fourth, and in my mind, the most important issue here - is the incest. You are talking about, maybe, four to six families. Inner-marriage and inner-family sex is what is the most horrific of these issues… Children are being born on that ranch & in southern Utah and Northern Arizona missing entire PARTS of their brain. THIS is what disgusts me the most…
Forget the polygamy. Too many people will claim religious freedom and many more will compare the actions of the FLDS to those individuals who have had many children by many fathers/mothers and live on welfare… Forget the physical abuse - kinda hard to prosecute a single person when those kids have it drilled into their head from the time that they can walk that this exact kind of thing will happen, so it is imperative NOT to tell ANYONE who their father or mother is…
At issue here are pedophilia and incest. These are the sins and crimes we can count on sticking to these men…
(And, you won’t hear much more from the LDS church, in Salt Lake. They have already condemned the actions of those who live in the polygamous groups, but I can tell you this – these groups are all OVER the western United States and Canada. They prosper because they are very, very low key.
The majority of the politicians in Utah are LDS. If these issues were truly anathema to the LDS religious population, there would have been MUCH more aggressive prosecution of these groups than we have seen. But, to be honest, the LDS are extremely sympathetic to those FLDS members – people with whom they feel a great solidarity. Let the LDS talk and talk about how the practice of polygamy is NOT a part of the mainstream LDS church (and the only reason they gave it up to begin with, was to attain statehood). But nothing will be done about any of this in Utah or Northern AZ because the LDS church, in the heart of hearts of the members themselves – feel it is neither sinful nor a crime…)
