The top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has been summoned to the White House to explain biting and unflattering remarks he made to a freelance writer about President Barack Obama and others in the Obama administration.

The face-to-face comes as pundits are already calling for McChrystal to resign for insubordination.

McChrystal has been instructed to fly from Kabul to Washington today to attend Obama’s regular monthly security team meeting tomorrow at the White House.

An administration official says McChrystal was asked to attend in person rather than by secure video teleconference, “where he will have to explain to the Pentagon and the commander in chief his quotes about his colleagues in the piece.”

Here’s the Rolling Stone article on McChrystal, in PDF form
Warning: language markhalperin.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/r1109mcchrystal.pdf

I think McChrystal’s days are numbered.
McChrystal is not going to take the rap for Obama’s remote, arm chair, quarterbacking.
With any luck, Obama will put one of his Communist czars in charge.
I hear his former (admitted Communist) appointee Van Jones is looking for a job.

Opps my mistake. Jones was the “GREEN JOBS” czar, until Glen Beck made the proven Communist public.
Do you think that will make a difference? Nah.

Whether he’s Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, or Obama, it’s the President’s job to keep the US safe. His approval rating is irrelevant. Politics is one thing; life and death, war and peace are more serious issues. If the general doesn’t understand this, then he never should have been general in the first place.

General McChrystal is a smart man. This was thought-out beforehand, no mistake.

He’s not going to take the blame when this all comes tumbling down…shoot, he couldn’t even get the troops he requested to do the job right.

Wise and good man, General McChrystal. Watch. This is not a mistake…nope.

God Bless.

I don’t understand your comment. None of the quotes I have seen have been about disagreements in how to prosecute the war. In fact, my impression is that McChrystal was given everything he wanted. Biden advocated less troops, McChrystal wanted more and got them. That’s the odd thing about the whole story. McChrystal isn’t taking a principled stand against policy, he’s just complaining about personalities–and rubbing in the fact that he won a policy disagreement with the VP.

But McChrystal didn’t win. Not all the way, anyhow. He asked for 40 thousand troops and got 30. He probably really believed he needed 40 and still does. He does have policy differences with the administration’s diplomacy people concerning the care and feeding of the Afghan government. Maybe McChrystal is right and maybe he’s wrong. But it’s more than just personality stuff. Quite possibly he should have resigned some time ago instead of letting it be known among subordinates (let alone Rolling Stone) that he harbored contempt for administration people.

Fair enough. But most of what is being reported from the article is not substantive. Its name calling and petty stuff. If he made a substantive argument about policy I would still think he was wrong to do it in public, but I would understand it better. And I agree that if he thought the 10K made that big of a difference he should have resigned. But to end a great career by making fun of the VPs name, referring to a retired Commandant of the Marine Corps as a “clown,” and referring to the French as “[explictive] gay” is just inexplicable. We’ll see if there is more substance when we get a chance to see the whole article, but the bits released so far do not reflect well on the judgment or maturity of McChrystal or his staff.

I have, in the past, been made aware that a lot of officers think things like that. Some few will say them. What is so inexplicable to me are two things. First, that he didn’t resign in disgust if he was so disgusted, and second that he actually supported Obama himself. My goodness! Could he not figure the man out better than that?

But then, one might suspect that, whatever talent he might have, he might also have a significant flaw. Possibly his supporting Obama and “joining his team” was all about that fourth star. An awful thing to think, but then, humans do things like that.

From reading the article, the only people showing discust are some of his subordinants, not him. He is just being petty.

Life is a bit different in ‘black ops’ where he got his training. However, he has been in front of the press long enough that he ‘should’ know better.

By the way, Obama is now talking as if he might keep him on. I wonder if he can’t replace him right now an keep to the schedule he wants in Afghanisan?

This is the general that covered up the Tillman friendly fire death. The family is still searching for the truth since his statements don’t match up to the facts they know. Tillman’s uniform was burned and his diaries all disappeared. Man of honor?

Oh, I think we’ve had quite a few Generals that said contemptuous things about the French.

McChrystal never got all the troops he wanted. And it took umpteen months to get the ones he did. Hillary Clinton is the only one who totally supported him.

Now, maybe, just maybe we don’t know all the conversations that went down between this Highly-Decorated Career Military General-and his (no Military experience) Commander-In-Chief.

Anyone who’s been in the Military, would understand the “Personality Conflict.”

It would not be easy working under one who’s calling the shots-and obviously clueless.

The Military is not a factory job. We live in a dangerous world. McChrystal also knows what’s gone down within the other theatres.

I just finished reading Alan Keyes’s blog post about this. I think my eyebrows roasted off reading it.

If I understand Keyes’s, he believes that the POTUS and administration has been pushing McChrystal’s buttons for quite some time in hopes of getting him to trip up. This new incident might have been intended as smoke and mirrors to distract from something or an excuse to further their agendas.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I for one am not going to focus on the front door. I’m going to watch and see who might be coming through the back door.

Obama and the guys have to be sweatin’ bullets. If he fires McChrystal, it’s McChrystal’s go-ahead to be able to do what he wants. Talk shows. Radio. Books for starters.

hmmm…Just how can they accomplish this, and shut him up at the same time?

My money’s on McChrystal.

Praying to God for strength and wisdom for McChrystal! Good man, McChrystal.

God Bless.

I’m sure the political theater has just started.

I’m wondering how this will impact the military and it’s infrastructure. I honestly think the POTUS still believes he can still turn any incident to his advantage. You know the old con game… if you can’t find an incident… try to manufacture one. I don’t think they’ll waste this one.

yes, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. a general doesn’t become a general by being stupid. surely he knew the reporter worked for rolling stone magazine and what that meant. i admit that i have to agree with most of what the general said about obama and his administration. maybe they are looking for a story to overshadow the oil spill for a week or so and the negative criticism that obama and his administration have received over that.

Obama had already deployed an additional 17,000 troops in February of 2009. In September, McChrystal wanted 500,000 more! Just to put that in perspective; it would mean that 57% of all active duty forces in the United States military would be in Afghanistan. I’d say that’s a lot to think about especially while our Ambassador to Afghanistan, a retired 3 star General which led our forces in Afghanistan between 2006-2007, is speaking out against an increase in troop levels. Obama also had to consider the fact that Hamad Karzai’s commitment was, and still is, questionable as he had entered into negotiations with the Taliban. In the end, he gave McChrystal another 30,000.

Oh brother.

When I was in the Navy, the “FRENCH” absolutely hated us. They where emotional, rude, and antagonistic towards the U.S. Navy.

The last time I pulled into port in Toulon France, the French sailors where constantly ganging up on the American Sailors, beating them up, and throwing them out the windows of the bars. Usually about 10 french sailors would gang up on about 4 or 5 Americans.

I know this, because I had to pull Shore Patrol Duty for one night, in Toulon France, and let me tell you, it was truly amazing.

The French are known for their rude behavior. So, perhaps the general has first hand knowledge, (as I do), about the behavior of the French. A little contemptious? So what!

Their soldiers and our soldiers might not get along, but there’s large cooperation in intelligence.

How could that happen? The French are a bunch of gay sissies who run away from a starter’s pistol.
