Huh? The discussion isn’t just about angel vs angels…but what the angel said. Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive of the Son of the Most High. He said that Jesus is His SON. Jesus said that he and the Father are one.

That’s the main point of discussion.

The second Gabriel that M saw was a fraud.
Well then it’s all my fault for bringing up the “angel” vs “angels” issue between the koran & the Bible.

That is what Hamba is responding to.

I apologize J. I thought he was trying to defend the second angel being Gabriel.

I should have read more closely. 😊

Very well Hamba… Now can you address the OP question for discussion.
Quote: spn82756
Question for discussion. If as Christians we believe that the Archangel Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive of the Holy Spirit and have the Son of God, then what are we to think of the whole Muslim faith. Didn’t Mohammad claim that it was the Gabriel that gave him the Quran, which claims that Jesus the Christ is just a human?
Edit to add:

This is the OP second question.

I’be been thinking about my post:

Well, right now I feel there is nothing wrong with it. I was showing a difference between the koran & the Bible regarding Gabriel.

Gabriel came to Mother Mary to announce his presence & message of the Birth of Jesus as I stated scripture.

**Many **angels came to Mary (from the koran) to announce the Birth of Isa the muslim Jesus.

Since this discussion/thread is about Gabriel, Annunciation & islam, my post was fitting for discussion.

As far as mohamad labeling Jesus as just a prophet and nothing more, it’s his way of dominating the situation, because mohamad wanted nothing to stand between him and his superiority.

Mohamad had a big chip on his shoulders!

Also if you read about mohamad, it’s his way or the highway! If you agree with him & PLEDGE to him, you are in, however, if you disagree, off with your head!

I haven’t figured out the easy way to type between various quoted lines. But we are definitely on the same page. Your post was completely valid. I allowed myself react to some of humba’s previous posts that always seem to evade answering the question.

Ahhhh yes indeed, Hamba is famous for doing just that!

Next thing he’ll tell you is how to pray. 😃

The answer to this is provided in the following verse in the same surah:

snip…

Surah 3 Verse 47

The word He in the above verse refers to the angel Gabriel who was sent to deliver the glad tidings to her and he appeared to her in human form and assured her that the message he brought was a will of God, and whatever God wills will certainly happen and as we can read in the following verse:

snip…
Hamba - the koran states “the angels said”…

**45 **Behold! the **angels **said: "O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah.

The Bible scripture states:

In the sixth month, God sent the **angel **Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Hamba…you still haven’t gotten to the original question. Who was the second angel named Gabriel that M claimed gave him the Koran? Did the first Gabriel lie? That would deny your own scripture. It’s the greatest contradiction in the history of man. Gabriel announces the Son of God. God himself becoming flesh. Then in the Koran…Gabriel says that he or God made a mistake and that Jesus isn’t God. 🤷

Jesus (pbuh) is NOT the only “son of God” mentioned in the Bible:

Jacob is God’s son and firstborn: “Israel is my son, even my firstborn” Exodus 4:22.

Solomon is God’s son “He shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son”: 2 Samuel 7:13-14.

Ephraim is God’s firstborn: “for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.” Jeremiah 31:9 → Who is God’s firstborn – Israel or Ephraim??

Adam is the son of God “Adam, which was the son of God.” Luke 3:38.

Common people (you and me) are the sons of God:
"Ye are the children of the LORD your God" Deuteronomy 14:1. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” Romans 8:14. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12. “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” Philippians 2:15. “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: … now are we the sons of God” 1 John 3:1-2. “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” Job 38:7. “Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD,” Job 2:1. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD,” Job 1:6. “when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men,” Genesis 6:4. “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair” Genesis 6:2

And was Jesus the only begotten Son of God? (with a capital ‘S’ in the word ‘Son’ even!) → Read Psalms 2:7

"I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me (King David, King), Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee."

And so, let us indeed examine what the Bible (Luke 1:30-35) says about the Annunciation:

30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.
31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.
32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

The passage says that he will be called the Son of God → which does not mean anything at all since there are to be found so many “Sons of God” in the Bible as pointed out above.

And who is the father of Jesus anyway according to the verse Luke 1:32 above, God or David?

Like I have mentioned before, in general, the Qur’an and the Bible does not contradict one another and the only places where there would be contradiction are where the Bible actually contradicts itself.

Hamba,

You said we only believe in one angel…we acknowledge the presence of many angels…

I do not understand your logic how Islam has it right about the Bible, that is the beliefs and history of faith of the Jewish people, and the Gentiles coming to Christ within the New Testament.

How can non Jewish, non Christians get the Bible ‘right’?

People come out all the time drawing on Catholic sources to disprove it, but they are only drawing on a few parts minus the whole picture.

I will have to look more at your passages. I still think Muslims need to study the Bible from Judeo Christian sources for better interfaith dialogue…otherwise, understanding usually goes nowhere.

Because Muslims are not allowed to read the Gospels in pure form, it gets old pretty quick trying to discuss much. But thank you for coming on.

Actually, I read it again…The Spirit of God (here are already Two Persons of One God)…calls Israel as sons speaking to it as His own, His chosen. And they are as children being taught, formed; God shows them the liturgy by which He desires to be worshipped…

(And if you can ever go to a Catholic/Orthodox Mass, you will see many things drawn from the ancient form of Jewish worship…)

Later when He speaks, He is speaking to them as beloved…but you must continue reading the entire Bible…and seeing how the Jewish people cannot atone for sin…but wait for the Messiah…the Savior…but to this day, there are those who expect some one like King David.

When Christ is baptized at the River Jordan by St. John the Baptist with his followers, a voice comes down from heaven and a dove appears over Christ proclaiming, ‘This is my Beloved Son, for Whom I am well pleased.’

So here is a historical event that reveals the relational nature of personhood in God…

Now back to Gabriel and all the angels…

My perspective

His kingdom will last forever! BTW…have you read the Gospel according to St John?

In the beginning was the Word…

I’ll let you take from there.

Hamba ~

it is true that many people are called “sons of God” in the Bible.

yet no one save Jesus in the history of humanity has ever been concieved by the power of the Holy Spirit. every person has had a human father, or like Adam was made from clay by God Himself.

yet no human has ever been concieved by the Holy Spirit, to share in God’s nature, essence, and holiness, being both Man and God.

but Jesus has. Jesus was concieved by the Holy Spirit, which means that fathering, concieving power to give Jesus life and flesh in Mary’s womb came not from Joseph or from any human man, but from God Almighty. thus God is Jesus’ Father in a wholly unique and literal way.

Jesus became incarnate in history by the Holy Spirit, yet reveals that he had glory with the Father before the world was made (John 17:5). so this is how we say Jesus is the unique, eternal, and literal Son of God.

Was Jesus (pbuh) the son of God because he was filled with the Holy Ghost? Let us read:

**Luke 1:67 “Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost.”
Luke 1:41 “Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.”
Acts 4:8 “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost said.”
Acts 13:9 “Then Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him…”
Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak.” **

Is Jesus(pbuh) a god because he was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb?

Well, if this is the case, then John the Baptist should be a god also, as claimed in Luke 1:13-15.

13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

Yes, the Holy Ghost/Spirit. What is the point?

I would think that God would work through His Holy Spirit not only to Mary, Ever Virgin and Mother of Christ, but to the intimates…especially with Elizabeth carrying St. John the Baptist! When Christ was baptized at the River Jordan by St. John the Baptist, John and his followers witnessed the Theophany of God causing an event on earth. It was a theophany when the Israelites were delivered from Pharoah by being led by the Pillar of Fire and the Parting of the Red Sea.

At the baptism of Jesus, St. John the Baptist and his followers witnessed a great Theophany. St John and his followers see a dove – the symbol of the Holy Spirit hover above Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit, the witnesses heard God speak from heaven, ‘This is my beloved Son of Whom I am well pleased’, also revealing Godis the Father of Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

And it also foretells something about the value of family…Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and the Virgin birth…

The baptism of Jesus does not mean He needs to be washed by water to clean Him.

Christ’s baptism was the ritual used to begin His ministry! And the saving nature of Jesus was symbolically represented in the parting of the waters of the Red Sea that saved the Chosen People, that Christ’s death and resurrection separated the power of death from new life found in Him.

We follow Christ’s baptism by being baptized to be incorporated into Him, into His body. Everytime we go into a Catholic church, we recall the saving water of our baptism by blessing ourselves with the sign of the Cross and renewing our faith in the Lord.

This is why you see Christians as happy…because we have the new life of Jesus in us, we forgive and are forgiven, and each day is brand new to begin again.

It was God through the Holy Spirit Who allowed Elizabeth to be with child despite her old years.

So, with Elizabeth with child because of God choosing her and the working of the Holy Spirit through God, she is with child. And this child, in union with the Holy Spirit of God, leaps for joy in the womb of Elizabeth when Mary arrives pregnant with the Messiah. So again, what is happening is that the Holy Spirit is also united with Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit is the Son of God. The mission is about to start with the Jesus now among mankind!

What we have is not interpretation but actual events demonstrating 3 personhoods in one God, we call this sacred mystery of God the Holy Trinity.

Again, God called Jesus His Beloved Son…and this also fulfills the ancient desire of God found in Scripture that there is nothing more pleasing to Him when neighbors have love towards each other as brethren…as family.

So in Catholicism, with our insistence that all come over the Head of Peter, we are to be family…and as Christ said, what good is it if we only help our own blood, or we forgive just so many times?..we must love our neighbor as ourselves, we must love those who are not our family, and we must forgive all the time and stay united.

Hamba, you are using Scripture to prove the Holy Spirit, Who Was and Who Is…the relational nature of Three Persons in One God…!!!

The purpose being that in the end of Revelation—Jesus Christ as Prophet…the Good News and Salvation, Jesus as King…and we share in His kingdom as members and living in union with His dignity, and as Messiah…we are now joined with Christ through His life, death and resurrection…as new people…not just the Jews but all mankind.

And furthermore, through Jesus Christ we Gentiles especially are now grafted onto the Olive Tree, the saved and redeemed children of Israel.

You must read the Gospels from a Catholic/orthodox source to understand properly…
Blessings!

Kathleen, I am reading the Gospels… only thing is that I take what is written at face value i.e. the same as I would expect a non-Muslim to do when he or she is reading the Qur’an.

At this point in time, let us agree to disagree.

As long as Christians are worshiping and regularly prostrating to the One Lord of the Universe, then I would be satisfied… at least for the time being.

Hamba,

I am glad to know that you are reading the Gospels…but by what source? Which Bible?

I am not one to tolerate falsehoods or half truths very much, because doing so always brings unnecessary suffering to mankind, even the smallest omission or insertion into the approved Bible makes tremendous changes that damage us…

Good example: Sola Scriptura. And their Bible versions are not the reflection of the oral tradition passed by Jesus Christ through His apostles to the Early Church Fathers and all the way down to today…Luther said ‘we are saved by faith “alone”’. No need for church, individual interpretation, so then we have great scandals in Christianity…divorce, remarry to multiple partners, contraception that destroys future generations and facilitates promiscuity and adultery and sexual diseases.

Or you see atheists making fun of people who believe in God, but they worship reason without God and making science and man god…the greatest sin is found in the garden of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit so they could be like gods…It is called Pride.

Do you know the atheists believe in Global Warming and contraception like these are some kind of religion…and now it is coming out Global warming is faulty science but a tool to get tax money from us, or that people are now seeing what contraception and the free sex culture has done to society?..Atheists have their beliefs about society, and many times they do more damage than people who ‘believe in myths’.

I mean, I read a post someone researched and more people have died under state governments than religion.

But back to interpreting Scripture…

Interpreting the Word of God without the Holy Spirit is playing god with it. People want to read what fills their carnal needs be it pride, superiority, carnal desire, you name it. Not good.

I am certainly not meaning you do that, but individuals who have taken Sacred Scriptures, rewritten them with different context, led people into new churches and assemblies with the subsequent, nurturing loss of the sacraments for this life and the possible loss of life in the next with Christ, and causing wars and hatred with what the Word of God was meant to be…

I mean that for all these leaders who have created new religions or new forms of Christianity using the true believers’ Scriptures. Not good.

How many people have died because of the misinterpretation of the Word of God Made Flesh?!! Not good. People being killed over the Sacred Word of God meant to give us New Life. No good this killing…

blessings!

and now it is coming out Global warming is faulty science but a tool to get tax money from us,
So there is no climate change where you live and no effects of pollution?

You government is spreading this so they can tax you more?

This is the position of The Catholic Church or your personal one?

(Haven’t you been listening to the News??? The liberal press is not reporting…Al Gore lives in a massive house that uses up alot of energy. So that shows he is not too worried about his emissions into the ozone or his consumption taking away from the poor while George W’s was a most energy efficient one down there on the farm in Texas…

And that the global warming crowd marginalized better and more grounded scientists for not going along with their limited findings…and now it came on that they also doctored a graph, taking out quite a bit of info, when in reality the trend is not that much different…

and that the big ships that sail down by you create alot more for the ozone…

And that this past week, the emails hacked from the center holding these young rascals 6 weeks ago is now being made public, and people are reading them and seeing it all as a hoax to burn us in tax hell…

And living along the Ring of Fire…aren’t you aware of the great increase of geothermal activity in the last 80 years or so or that the coast of Oregon was having an unusual amount of underground seismic activity that they now have discovered underground volcanic beds…that are pretty hot underwater…

And that we will be going into a cooling stage…along with the effect of the earth and its relationship with retaining and emitting radiation and solar spot activities???

Where have you been??? Don’t you know Your Very Own Prime Minister of Australia is now hell-bent to lead the exposure of probably one of the greatest frauds in science??? Follow the news in Your Country!!! Follow your Leader!!!

The seculars can be just as ardent in their belief systems as religious…and just because I can’t buy the whole deal about global warming doesn’t mean I or my church are not stewards…St. Francis of Assisi is a good case in point.)

And let this site get back to Gabriel, the angels and the Annunciation!!!
