The reality is the Catholic vote and Catholic politicians have been at the heart of keeping abortion legal in this country since 1972. The Protestant vote went 57-42 against Obama and the Catholic vote was 50-48 for Obama. The major supporters of abortion on demand have been Democratic Catholics like Kennedy and Pelosi. They are also beginning to do what they can to get gay marriage legalized. Perhaps the problem is the Catholic Church has not done anything to discipline politicians who vote against the Church’s position so the laity feel they have the right to be in favor of abortion and gay marriage as well.
Sadly, you are quite right. Great post.

It looks to me like if the White Catholic vote had been the same as the White Protestant vote there is no way we would have elected a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage politician.
Why then? Going back to elections to 2000, the correlation seems to be somewhat consistent and shows a steady growth of support for the Republican Candidate.

White Catholic Vote per the Pew Poll.

2000 Gore 45% Bush 52%
2004 Kerry 43% Bush 56%
2008 Obama 47% McCain 52%, this shows a dip in support for Republicans but we have to remember, the idea of voting for a black candidate seemed to appeal to a number of people, was new and possibly people were not as aware of the issues involved.
2012 Obama 40% Romney 59%, this also would seem to show many White Catholics are aware of Obama’s infringing on religious liberty besides the other issues you mention.

Also, California and New York are big chunks of the population of the USA, that has to be remembered.

Bryan Fischer, protestant pundit says the Evangelicals did not come out enough against Obama.

And I’ve also heard that though Hispanics should be pro-life, many are, it seems in general as a demographic, they actually are not.

Just to put it out there…Many or most Hispanics like Obama because of his views on immigration. All other “conservative” politicians are usually in favor of stricter immigration laws. They would rather support a candidate that will do nothing to split their families apart as apose to one that would push for more deportations.

Or it could be entitlements as well.

Romney didn’t score with Hispanics but I believe it has been brought up before that what you are stating is a fallacy. Reagan granted amnesty but it did not help Bush Sr. in the demographics with Hispanics.

Hispanics just tend to vote for the Democrats in general. Not always.

There are not many prominent Hispanic Democrats while the Republicans actually have a number in Martinez, Rubio and Cruz. All more prominent than any Democrat Hispanic unless Menendez might compare. Bill Richardson is a past Secretary of State.

The White Protestant vote against Obama was 69%. The White Catholic vote against Obama was only 59%. If 10% more of the White Catholic vote had voted against Obama there is no way he could have won the Presidency again. California and New York have a big chunk of white Catholic voters.

Is this an indication of how many are here illegally? We sure have done a bad job of protecting our borders if it is. Why does the Catholic Church protect Illegals, is this not sin?

I understand that Hispanics are more likely to vote Democratic because the Democratic Party is more likely to support welfare. Immigration is a side issue.

Still, the figures also don’t seem to jive with your assertion that Biden and Pelosi seemed to be typical white Democrats, you may not have said that exactly but kind of allude to it.

California according to many, is totally gone for the Republicans because of concessions made on illegal immigration.

New York City will always be more liberal as many other cites are in the US to the rest of the state.

The whole immigration debate is here, I don’t think the Church actually condones illegal immigration, we treat all people with dignity is how I think the Church would sum it up.

Though it would be nice if all Catholics were 69% against Obama and it should be that way, I’m very sorry he was elected, I have said before Catholics can affect the outcome of an election.

59% of one demographic is at least a step in the right direction.

I was once in a neighborhood, the house had a statue of St. Francis in the yard and an Obama sign in the yard as well. I really shook my head at seeing that.

People who haven’t been to Church for a long time or go very irregularly may have different views on homosexual ‘marriage’ than Catholics who go to Church weekly. If you group all people who say they are Catholic together, without distinguishing those who are practicing the faith and those who do not practice, or practice infrequently, it may unfortunately produce a result such as the Gallup poll.

In over 30 states, a majority of voters have voted in support of a constitutional amendment for marriage to be between one man and one woman, doesn’t that conflict with the percentage of people that support a federal law for homosexual marriage in this poll?

Plausible theories have made by Washington post, that support for homosexual marriage may be oversold in polling and paraphrasing the article, because opponents of homosexual marriage might feel more strongly than supporters and are more likely to vote and there may be a percentage of people who do not say their true feelings on the issue of homosexual marriage to pollsters, because they do not want to come across as intolerant

Does the poll distinguish between lapsed Catholics and practicing Catholics? People whop haven’t been to Church for a long time or go very irregularly may have different views on homosexual ‘marriage’ than a Catholic that goes to Church regularly. When you group lapsed and practicing Catholics together it may unfortunately produce a result such as the Gallup poll.

In over 30 states, a majority of voters have voted in support of a constitutional amendment for marriage to be between one man and one woman, so does that fact connect with this poll?

Absolutely correct. 👍

The polls before the North Carolina Marriage Amendment Vote had it as being very close. Yet, the pro-Traditional (Only kind of marriage) side won by double digits.

So, for gay marriage and a number of issues, the polls don’t always add up.

Too, some people, if it is a verbal poll, on the street as I was once even questioned sometimes don’t want to say they are against gay marriage for appearing to harbor a prejudice.

And the figure of States that have Traditional Marriage in the Constitution or in Law is I believe around 35 actually versus around 13 with Marriage Redefined.

Once again, it would be interesting to see the “practicing Catholic” statistic. Many are born into Catholicism vs. say Evangelicals who make a conscious choice of their faith and religion, what Church exactly they go to, etc.

It’s good to belong to one Universal Church as the Catholic Church is versus going Church hunting but this kind of poll shows the downside.
Some who answered the poll may have been born into a Catholic family but may have never practiced or believed in the faith. They might even believe in a totally different religion but consider themselves to be Catholic just because of birth. This is like what has happened to many Jews.

Is this an indication of how many are here illegally?
You just now noticed?
We sure have done a bad job of protecting our borders if it is.
No feaking way! :bigyikes:
Why does the Catholic Church protect Illegals, is this not sin?
It’s not a sin to vote for a candidate with the intentions of wanting to keep your family together. The Church does not discriminate based on who has papers or not.

Exactly and when Biden and Pelosi are mentioned; guess what?

They were born into the Catholic Faith.

Granted, I would suppose Protestants and Mormons are likewise born into their faith.

With Evangelicals though and some other protestants, they do seem to conscientiously choose their faith. Interesting difference.

Hispanics are split when asked to assess the effect of illegal immigration on Hispanics living in the United States: 29% say it has had a positive impact, 31% negative and 30% believe it made no difference, according to the study by the non-partisan Pew Hispanic Center. That is a sharp decline from a 2007 survey, when 50% of Hispanics said illegal immigrants were having a positive impact.
Okay, this is off topic but there is even a split with Hispanics as to how illegal immigration is viewed.

Exactly and when Biden and Pelosi are mentioned; guess what?

They were born into the Catholic Faith.
“No one who merely disbelieves in all (these heresies) can for that reason regard himself as a Catholic or call himself one. For there may be or may arise some other heresies, which are not set out in this work of ours, and, if any one holds to one single one of these he is not a Catholic” (S. Augustinus, De Haeresibus, n. 88).

“So the Christian is a Catholic as long as he lives in the body: cut off from it he becomes a heretic - the life of the spirit follows not the amputated member” (S. Augustinus, Sermo cclxvii., n. 4).

That is sickening. Let us hope and pray that this never becomes the case. But then again, under the Obama administration, it may very well happen and if not under him it may very well happen under the next administration, if a Democrat is elected.

It’s sad and very disheartening to see the secular government attacking traditional marriage, but it is within that government’s authority to do it imo.

I see it as an attempt to drive Christians away, out of the public discourse. But so be it. They have their law, and we have ours.
