Gamers, favorite consoles?

It is good to see all the Nintendo love.

I do recall my brother and I playing Mario 3 straight through. It took us an entire Saturday, but we did it.

Awesome! While I was able to beat Zelda because it was more of a think/patience game, inevitably I’d end up on the last world of Mario 3 with not enough power wings to make it through. I got close a few times but never quite made it.

Ah, boy, Donkey Kong Country. I can’t believe I forgot about that. Me and my twin sister used to play Donkey Kong Country 2 for hours, we never did beat it! There was one level in the final world that was just murderous, haha.

Too funny. I would play for hours with my twin brother. I think I know what level you are talking about. I remember my brother and I playing the same level for three hours before we finally got past it. Our parents didn’t really limit our video game time and we were sort of OCD about finishing games. We are both pretty laid back and patient, so we didn’t mind playing the same level over and over and over again until we finally beat it.

I lost my entire sophomore year of college. I would always annoy people by placing a proximity mine in every single spawn location. Sometimes the same guy would then get killed four or five times in a row without ever having a chance to fight. Ah memories.

Yeah world 8 was brutal without the p wings.

I’m grew up Playstation and its Playstation I will always be… followed by Nintendo. Not a fan of Xbox, moreso the FPS-obsessed culture of the fanbase.

Now if only I could get myself an HD TV so I can finally get a PS3. Ugh… -.-

I have about 75 games, and of those, over 50 belong to either the SNES or PS2.

So yeah, those are my two favorites, with the SNES being #1. First console I ever owned, and I’ve made so many memories with it. Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy III( aka FF6), the Donkey Kong series, Secret of Mana, Super Metroid, and so much more.

The wii is the only console I’ve ever owned, so I guess I have to pick it. My favorite system is the gameboy advanced.

Final fantasy 6 was one of the best RPGs I played as a kid. Though I tend to enjoy FF4 more. I’ll openly admit it is mostly because of nostalgia, though, since I grew up with it.

I’d really love to see them come out with a new one of these. Or even if they would at least make it available in the Wii download store. My brother got the NES and SNES in our “separation” (I got the N64), so I can’t really hook it up and play those games at the moment.

The Lost Vikings was great. You don’t see as many puzzle games like that on consoles anymore. If you ever are interested in Let’s Plays, you should look up Pholtos on Youtube. He did a great LP of The Lost Vikings.

It’s interesting to see the differences between the DS and the 3DS. The DS had lots of great RPGs, but not many fighting games. So far, the 3DS has a bunch of great fighting games, but not many RPGs.

3DS is…“nice” but things like region-locking made it an instant no-buy for me. I was expecting it, but it’s funny as technology “improves” so does the company tendencies to restrict how much freedom a user has with the device they bought (DLC, region-lock, re-purchasing DLC bought on other systems, etc). I think they’re saying the next xbox will require “always online” requirements just to start up a game? Ridiculous - I’m quitting gaming after this generation.

DS lite has probably one of the best game libraries out of all portable systems, (and arguably all consoles period). And the DS lite is relatively easy to use for homebrew, works as a mp3 player, alarm clock, play retro game you of course legally own, store books, etc. It was my iphone before I had an iphone.

I’m really hoping the rumors about next-gen consoles going online-only is false. Because if that’s the case, there’s no way I’m getting one. I learned that lesson the hard way with a few PC games. It’s just not fair. You buy something, then have no ownership over it. It’s one of the reasons I decided to dig out my old Saturn.

The DS library was huge. I’m a big fan of RPGs, myself, so it was a great system. Had some nice platformers and puzzle games, too.

Haven’t consoles always been region specific?

I guess it’s not a big deal for me. I cannot ever think of a time where I really wanted a game that wasn’t available in my area.

I am concerned about the tendency towards DLC, too. I just want to buy a game once and be done – not have to pay for the thing in increments. I can understand the rationale that DLC can prolong the life of a game by adding to it, but I think it makes it too tempting for developers to put out a game too soon and/or to hold things back specifically so they can charge for more later. That’s another reason I like Nintendo. They’re much slower to adopt these types of things than their competitors. Though they are moving more and more in that direction.
