Openly gay Christians, a controversial nun who clashed with the Catholic Church and a transgender woman are reportedly among the invited guests greeting Pope Francis at the White House next week, a move that one Catholic activist calls “an ambush” and “political stunt.”

While it is unclear if gay former Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, gay Catholic blogger Aaron Ledesma, Sister Simone Campbell or biological man Vivian Taylor will have the opportunity to meet the pontiff face to face, the quartet’s presence, along with many other guests, is seen by some as a visible nod to factions who would wish to nudge the Church left.

“This is definitely out of the ordinary,” said Michael Hichborn, president of the Catholic watchdog Lepanto Institute. “[President Obama is] trying to force the pope into a situation where it seems as if the Church is giving license to homosexuality and socialism.”

Matthew 9:12 "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
That said … I agree with Highborn per what the President seems to be doing through these arrangements.

If I know Pope Francis as well as I think I do, he’ll show nothing but the utmost respect for each guest’s dignity as a human being and a child of God, regardless of how sinful we may consider them to be. If anyone wants him to publicly shame a controversial nun or a transgender woman, they’ll only be disappointed. I feel as though his preferred approach to these types of situations is to see the person as one of God’s beloved and treat them accordingly. It isn’t always helpful to correct a person at every possible opportunity.

They know what the Church teaches, that’s why they’re there. But Pope Francis will not falter on Catholic doctrine, and yet neither will he force these people out of his presence. They will receive acceptance and charity from the Holy Father, but they will not find the affirmation they so obviously seek. The Church does not bow to the whims of those who disagree with Her. If Nero couldn’t destroy the Church in its infancy, a few liberal guests certainly won’t today.

Bill Donohue said something similar:

*And they are not content to have him speak in general terms about concerns like economic justice or the environment.

They want him to advance specific items on their agenda*, like paid sick leave, a higher minimum wage, and climate change. Nowhere, of course, do they express openness to what he might say on marriage, family or the sanctity of life. Indeed, if he addresses any of these issues from the House rostrum, be prepared to hear these same voices caterwauling about separation of church and state.

What I’d like to know is - how is it that a pro-abortion activist nun has been allowed to remain in her order ?

It is not surprising that Obama would do something like this. I know the Holy Father will never advocate for sinful ways of life, but I am never sure if he is going to say anything about them. I can only hope that he will set some people in this country straight.

This reminds me of the bait and switch Obama pulled on Notre Dame…and it was that. Believing the media is like believing Satan’s press secretary.

👍 Right on! Go, Pope Francis!

Well said!!! I hope that no one expects him to be anything but kind to everyone present, but i agree Pope Francis is strong and can’t be manipulated. 😊

I know. I’m not sure if I understand why she hasn’t been given some sort of reprimand or even excommunication.

I believe that Obama hates and fears the Roman Catholic Church because he understands that Her doctrine is irreversible and stands in the way of his immoral Socialist agenda. He wants to, but does not, however, fully understand what drives Pope Francis–is the progressive **appearing ** Francis just another Cardinal Joseph Bernardin with whom Obama found common ground in Chicago, or is Francis another JP II/B XVI? Does Francis see right through Obama’s “climate change” (i.e., Cap and Trade) tax ripoff? Does Francis agree that Obama’s $18 trillion, and growing, debt is immoral? And so on with abortion (just a seamless garment-type issue?), gay marriage (who an I to judge?) and anti-religious freedom (give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s?).

Obama wants to know where exactly Francis stands on these issues.

In short, Obama doesn’t know whether, after the Pope’s visit to America and the UN, Obama’s agenda will be advanced or harmed. That’s ALL Obama cares about regarding the Pope. Perhaps, then, the anti-Catholic activist group Obama wants Francis to meet at the WH will serve the purpose of feeling out the Pope of those issues. Forewarned is forearmed.

Cutting someone off from the Sacraments is not to be taken lightly! Those who need it the most, should not be denied access to God’s grace.

Also, the Pope is not in charge of religious groups. If there’s a reprimand to be given, it will come from the head of her order not the Vatican.

I believe all these people will witness Christ in Pope Francis. Whether that encounter brings them back to God or not is up to them individually. We are called to plant the seeds; the Holy Spirit will take care of the rest. 👍

The gates of Hell will not prevail! I think the Pope knows and feels this when he visits D.C. I will say, I will start saying extra prayers to St. Michael.

Beautifully stated. Thank you so very much.

I also believe he knows that some try to manipulate. From iNews Guyana, AFP:
Pope Francis says he has felt “used” by people claiming to be his friend since he became pontiff, in a radio interview touching on the personal side of his papacy. “I never had so many quote-unquote ‘friends’ as now. Everyone is the pope’s friend,” Francis said in a telephone interview with radio station Milenium in his native Argentina. “I have felt used by people who presented themselves as my friends and whom I hadn’t seen more than once or twice in my life. They have used that to their own benefit. But it’s an experience we all go through,” he told Argentine journalist Marcelo Gallardo, a real-life friend since the days when the pope was bishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. “Friendship in the utilitarian sense — let’s see what advantage I can gain by getting close to this person and becoming friends — that pains me,” he told Gallardo in the interview, broadcast Sunday.

That doesn’t surprise me coming from the current inhabitants of the White House but I think the Pope will be quite capable of handling the situation. Doubt that will surprise him either!! Many prayers for our Pope and all those he encounters. God is Blessing America with his visit!! God Bless, Memaw

From the article

“I’d warn you against drawing a lot of conclusions of one, two or three people on the guest list because there will be 15,000 other people there,” Earnest said.

Don’t we have more important things to worry about?
