I hope I didn’t sound like I was lecturing in my comments, Shoshana.
If it sounded that way, my apologies.
I’ve given this subject a lot of thought, as I watch the gradual and continual sexual degradation of almost everyone around us. It’s depressing and requires a continuous effort not to let it drag me in as well, it is so pervasive.
I think what the priests have been affected by as well as the rest of us, is this pagan ethic that sexual intercourse is somehow a right. It is rarely expressed that bluntly, but if you bear it mind as you hear various public commentators, celebrities, and basically anyone with an opinion talk about sexual issues and practices, that presupposition underlies much of it. It is a given.
The other issues such as birth control, abortion, homosexual marriage, etc. flow naturally from that presupposition.
And, of course, as Catholics, we look at the issue from a totally different perspective. It is when we let ourselves slip into that mind-set around us that we tend to find ourselves chafing at the moral teachings of Mother Church.
Just my thoughts.
