I agree that homosexuals are not a race of people. However, would you agree that, in addition to the reasons you mentioned, the choices homosexuals and heterosexuals make with regard to their sexual behavior is also driven by their sexual attraction, as simplistic as this may sound?
It is within your control, at least a certain amount, to decide what or whom you are attracted to.

In the same way that a child can “decide to like” vegetables (as we all have to do at some point along the way, or else become very sick from malnutrition), you can “decide to like” people of the same sex, or people of the opposite sex. Maybe it takes effort at first, but with practice, it becomes a habit.

We require that teenagers make good choices about who their friends are, and who they go out with on dates. They have to make decisions to be attracted to people who will be good for them with regard to staying out of trouble with drugs, gang activity, and that kind of thing.

If a person can make a conscious choice not to be attracted to gang members, why is it such a stretch to make a decision to be attracted to the opposite sex instead of the same sex?

This I don’t agree with. I think one CAN make a choice not to engage in homosexual behavior but NOT to be attracted to the opposite sex instead of the same sex if one is homosexual and even if one is bisexual. Since this is off-topic, I’ll leave it at that.

‘Think of the children’ is an emotional appeal and a logical fallacy. I’m happy to engage in a reasonable discussion but that can’t happen with rhetorical tactics that ignore the reality of the situation and put a stop to any logical discussion. The whole child protection and social morality argument is simply obfuscation.
No, it’s not. The Russians see what is happening in the United States. If gay so-called marriage is legalized in a State, 5 year olds automatically get gay story books and parents have their rights violated when the school does not inform them.

So can you tell me more about when you consciously decided not to be attracted to women? I’d genuinely like to know how that works.

From my own personal experience, I disagree with pretty much everything you just said. I think it’s possible to choose not to act on an attraction (which would cover your example of dating the right people), and it’s even possible to ignore your attractions to a certain extent… But attraction is still something that just happens, whether we like it or not.

I even disagree with your example of vegetables. Even as a grown man, there are still some vegetables I think are disgusting and can’t eat. I know some people find tomatoes, cauliflower, and mushrooms delicious – but I can’t for the life of me understand why!

I went through my “women” phase and my “bad boy” phase, and by pure luck or divine intervention, survived them without any physical harm done - and yes, when I came to myself, I made a conscious decision to be a monogamous heterosexual, at about 19 years of age.

I’m sure most people have a similar life story; I’m also sure that most people don’t care to advertise their youthful idiocies. :o

MOSCOW – In Russia it is now illegal to even speak about homosexuality around minors, much less openly display gay pride. Technically the ban is against “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” around minors, but the implication for openly gay individuals is clear. Public displays of affection by gays, including holding hands or displaying symbols like a rainbow flag, are now banned. Violators face steep fines and jail time; foreigners face similar penalties plus deportation.

I doubt that many Olympic athletes will accommodate Russia’s policies. People of that age, and with that degree of success, do tend to stand up to tyranny, for which Russia has been the home for centuries.

I also doubt that the Russian law enforcement would dare to arrest or try an Olympic athlete for such a thing. If they do, then the end result may well be that the government will be forced to change its laws, before the protests are over.

Thing is… that law is not tyranny. Altho I doubt many athletes will say anything really.

They don’t need to “accommodate” anything. They just need to obey local law just like they do in any country that hosts an international competition. Any attempt to make a political statement is likely to be dealt with before they get there. Watching one of the track and field events this morning, mention was made that one of the competitors is facing sanctions for painting her nails in rainbow colors in solidarity with the gay movement and in protest of Russia’s laws. The rules prohibit using the competition for political statements.

Some people are a little more fluid when it comes to sexual orientation. I’m not one of those people. Personally, I’ve never had the desire to experiment with heterosexuality.

Prosecute gay athletes? Ridiculous and over the top.

Any Catholic who could possibly openly support that idea should seriously consider whether they should still call themselves “faithful Catholics.” And the answer would be NO, you shouldn’t.

I know you are late to this thread but please read the OP. Catholics are not supporting the idea of prosecuting someone for **being homosexual **but are supportive of laws, such as those in Russia, that criminalize activities that promote homosexual unions or that might negatively affect children. That is a **very **faithful Catholic position.

Your statement is naive, IMHO. Young people stand up for justice. The current worldwide framework places gay rights as a social justice issue. Therefore, I stand by my claim that many Olympic athletes will not accommodate the laws. Further, given the youth of the typical athlete, my prediction is that the laws will be openly challenged, and that the Russians will be wise enough to remain mute. The Russian State will have no choice but to be humiliated.

Except that the law explicitly says that being a gay person in public, which includes any behavior that could be construed as homosexual, such as kissing, hugging, or holding hands, will lead to jail time. So…any Catholic who supports this either supports prosecuting someone for being an out homosexual or they’re incredibly naive or willing to deny reality. People all the time think that any law whatsoever here that touches on religion will be used in a broad manner to persecute Christians in the U.S., but somehow these same people are arguing that Russia will be more narrow with their persecution laws?

No, what you describe isn’t “being a gay person” - it is behavior that publically displays a same sex relationship. This is behavior that the Church considers sinful. Now, in Russia, the government does too.

If it was say 1945 in America, and two men or two women decided they were going to kiss and fondle each other in public, they would have been quickly arrested by police and no doubt charged with some form of lewd conduct. I seriously doubt that afterwards that we’d be hearing from some politicians how while we’re fighting Nazism in Europe it appears we’re embracing it at home, and I got a rather strong feeling that Catholics, whether clergy or laity wouldn’t be arguing that the arrests were a violation of Catholic Social teaching.

It will depend on the perceived numbers of protesting athletes. Young people might be all into social change, but they’re much more into succeeding. If a small number of athletes decide to flout the law, and if they see they’re a small number, they’re not going to miss a shot at a medal just to be, or pretend to be “out” as a homosexual. Remember, even Obama pretended not to support homosexual “marriage” until he won a second term.

In those times, Roosevelt and Churchill united with a noble aim and partnered against the evil of Nazism.

These days, the leaders of the same countries are partners in something far from noble, united in exporting an evil ideology: The Same Sex Marriage of Convenience Between Obama and Cameron.

Governments and people of other countries are realizing the U.S. and the UK have lost their standing as leaders of the world.

It IS odd that normal stages of being friends with same sex individuals pre-puberty is now being taken as an indication of sexual orientation. I certainly remember very close friendships with girls from grade school on. I even remember my friends and I claiming we’d never get married…I mean boys EWWWWWW…and we’d live together as girlfriends instead. Again we had no context for a sexual relationship with the opposite sex. They were a foreign species. And from what I could see boys felt the same way about girls.

The other thing that’s odd is that when little girls like boys activities, outdoors, physical, maybe even fishing or hunting, everyone thinks it’s just a stage. I was called a tomboy when young because I didn’t mind getting dirty, hated dresses and wanted to be outdoors. However when boys seem reserved, uninterested in boy stuff such as sports or cars or outdoor activities there is often this panic and label that the child is going to be gay. Perhaps this is what led the poster to claim his stepson was “gay” from age 3. It’s unfortunate anyone would come to such a conclusion and demonize normal differences among children. Quite honestly I do fear that the homosexual promoters (and no I do not consider you one) grab onto these labels for their agenda and for “proof” that children are born with a sexual orientation which is utterly ridiculous.

Lisa
Actually it isn’t myself that demonizes gay children, it is yours. The “choose to be this way” attitude is exactly that. And let me tell ya, at the age of 3 there was plenty of ‘hints’ of where his sexuality lies. His tastes, interests, what he gravitated to, etc…
It’s really not hard to understand or see once you live it. But that doesn’t fit the religious conservative view.
And for the record, there were plenty of sports options, hunting with his dad later [can’t be more masculine than walking around with a gun, right?], and so forth. And the best part is, we have an open minded family. So no one labeled him anything and let him choose who he was going to be and what he wanted to do. Eventually he left sports for arts and music.
