MOSCOW – In Russia it is now illegal to even speak about homosexuality around minors, much less openly display gay pride. Technically the ban is against “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” around minors, but the implication for openly gay individuals is clear. Public displays of affection by gays, including holding hands or displaying symbols like a rainbow flag, are now banned. Violators face steep fines and jail time; foreigners face similar penalties plus deportation.

The men’s figure skating teams may well be in trouble. I love figure skating, BTW. I just hope that everyone is available for the competition. Rob :ehh:

Perfect example of a country gone mad. Fortunately, the United States seems to be heading in the right direction.

I’m glad that active homosexual lifestyles are being discouraged in Russia, myself. Would that our poor country have had the courage and wisdom to do the same.

Has the Catholic Church in Russia made any statements about Russia’s laws on homosexuality?

There’s a big difference between discouragement and the persecution happening in Russia.

The Catholic Church opposed the anti-gay bill in Uganda and there is no reason to believe it holds the opposite view for Russia. In fact, the Wikileaks cables revealed that the Church “is against the criminalization of homosexuality.”

Because cracking down on homosexuals and their lifestyle will bring economic prosperity to the Russian people? Or Russian leaders want to maintain their consistently high standard of morality?

A picture can be worth a thousand words.

A heterosexual union normally produces babies. That’s why the left is fighting so hard for contraception and abortion which are extreme attempts to counteract what is the normal result of the sexual union of a man and a woman. Most people agree that children, which are always the biological product of one man and one woman, are a beautiful thing. And even every homosexual is the product of such a union. A baby is normally the fruit of traditional marriage. So here’s a question. Besides AIDS and other STDs, what fruit comes as a direct result of the homosexual act?

Because it pleases the Russian Orthodox Church, which seems to have gained considerable influence over there in the past few years.

If a random guy in a pink mesh shirt and a tutu is your biggest beef then clearly things aren’t that bad for your side. I don’t see gay gangs publicly torturing heterosexuals in public and broad daylight.

There was a boycott of a Russian-hosted Olympics back in the days of the Carter administration I think. Notwithstanding whatever their laws may now be, given the international spotlight, Russia isn’t going to do anything to jeopardize a peaceful face in the run-up to the Games.

Absolutely. I’m sure that to Putin the moral integrity of Russia is one thing, but tourist dollars are quite another. Perhaps I shouldn’t be so cynical, but how firm could one’s moral fibre be as a colonel in the KGB?

How will they know?

They don’t need to have gay written all over them. Just compete and get out of there.

Even Hillary Clinton gets that, when you are in foreign nations, you abide by their rules.
