Give me a break. The Vatican clearly opposes the criminalization of homosexuality, and the law is extremely immoral anyway. Besides, criminalization just makes people with SSAs more resolute in their behavior because they feel persecuted. I find it disgusting that any Catholic would support criminalization of a personal sin. Next thing you know, people on here will be promoting the criminalization of gluttony .

One thing is for sure: if gluttony is criminalized, New York City will be the first to do it.

You realize we are talking about Russia here, right? I doubt they have ever had freedom of speech in Russia. Not under the Tsars, not under Communism, and not under the current government.

Is this what they are actually proposing? Because Russian culture is full of male actors and dancers, and female athletes of every kind, and they are strong on gender equality in the work force. So I strongly doubt that male-female equality is going to be mistaken for homosexual activism.

More in the way persecuting rapists hopefully discourages the practice. Immoral things ought to be outlawed, law is a teacher after all. Executed? Obviously not. But illegal, certainly.

I was going to ask what you’d think would be a just punishment for homosexual acts between consenting adults, but if you already don’t see the difference between consensual acts and non-consensual ones, your opinion on that question would be of very limited value to me.

BTW, the Church doesn’t have an official position on this or any similar law.

When these type of laws start to get out of hand, if they haven’t already, I think the church will wish that it had been in the forefront condemning them and not trailing behind some run-of-the-mill, secular human rights organization.

I agree. But I oppose any form of criminalizing sin, if it doesn’t harm those not participating in it. I’d rather they ban tobacco before homosexuality.

I was more referencing the posts that wished America would institute laws when I mentioned freedom of speech. And considering you said it was “common sense,” I naturally assumed you would prefer it be brought to Canada too, which I believe has freedom of speech, correct?

I am discussing it from an American point of view. Russia has their own gender norms. This type of bill opens the door for criminalization of acting against gender norms in Russia too. But if this bill were applied in America, we would start seeing bills crop up similar to what I discussed in my post.

There have been uncountable cases of young gay men in particularly being brutally murdered by gangs in Russia.

The sad fact is that it is fostered by the blatant xenophobia of the government, which tries to falsely present itself as a crusading Christian force resurrecting morality after decades of Communism when in fact Putin has returned Russia to a police state where corruption and abuse are rife at the highest levels. Joseph Stalin is even praised on Russian TV and by government figures. In the post-Stalin years of the Soviet era, Khrushchev “de-stalinized” the country. Putin is reversing that trend. Now, why on earth a so-called “Christian” would want to promote one of history’s greatest monsters - and an atheist, anti-religious one at that - is beyond me.

Poor Russia is under its most corrupt leadership since the fall of the Soviet regime.

You see, this is why Pope Francis takes the view that he does, based upon the Catechism which condemns discrimination against homosexual persons whilst maintaining that homosexual acts are sinful. Hatred of any group only leads to the absolutely disgusting, totally un-Christ-like statement of the above cleric - he actually regretted not being allowed to get involved in the brutal gang beating of people simply because they were gay!!!

This can only end in one way. Such xenophobic speech, crimes, homophobic culture and government actions could lead to mass murder at worst - I’m not kidding. It wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened.

Russia has criminalized homosexual propaganda.

How is this different from criminalizing pornography? Pornography is illegal in many places, and here in Canada, it is illegal to sell or show pornography to persons under the age of 18.

Sounds like common sense, to me.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993.

Read the wording of the law:

"Moscow, July 1, Interfax - President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a bill “On the Protection of Children from Information Harmful to their Health and Development,” according to a posting on the legal information portal.

"From now on, fines will be imposed on persons “popularizing non-traditional sexual relations among minors by disseminating information encouraging minors to adopt nontraditional sexual behavior, distorting the concept of social equality of traditional and nontraditional sexual relations, or forcing information on nontraditional sexual relations on minors, or inciting interest in them.”

"If such actions do not carry criminal liability, the private individual at fault will be fined 4,000 to 5,000 rubles, official 40,000 - 50,000 rubles and legal entity between 800,000 and 1 million rubles, or the offender’s operations will be suspended for 90 days.

"If such actions have been undertaken with the use of mass media or information or telecommunications networks, including the Internet, a private individual will be fined between 50,000 and 100,000 rubles, official between 100,000 and 200,000 rubles and legal entities up to 1 million rubles, or the offender’s operations will be suspended for up to 90 days.
