GRAND BLANC TWP, MI – Genesys Health System’s recent decision to prohibit some tubal ligations in order to comply with Catholic church medical directives is spotlighted in a ProPublica report published Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Doctors at Genesys, a Catholic health system based in Grand Blanc Township, used to perform the procedure, also known as tube-tying, on new mothers who wanted to prevent future pregnancies – but that changed on Nov. 1, the report says.

The procedure is only permitted if the “direct effect and immediate purpose” is to treat a serious medical problem.
