GRAND BLANC TWP, MI – Genesys Health System’s recent decision to prohibit some tubal ligations in order to comply with Catholic church medical directives is spotlighted in a ProPublica report published Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Doctors at Genesys, a Catholic health system based in Grand Blanc Township, used to perform the procedure, also known as tube-tying, on new mothers who wanted to prevent future pregnancies – but that changed on Nov. 1, the report says.
Now, doctors at Genesys are prevented from tying a woman’s tubes solely as a form of birth control, the report says. The procedure is only permitted if the “direct effect and immediate purpose” is to treat a serious medical problem.

I can already hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth:
  1. It is a PUBLIC SERVICE, you can’t impose your morality on me!
  • It’s imposing your morality on the hospital to make the doctors and benefactors do what they find objectionable. It’s a two way street.
  1. They don’t care about women’s health!
  • They allow it when there are verifiable health reasons, not because they don’t want more kids.
  1. People can’t get it elsewhere! The hospitals are all Catholic!
  • You can’t find an atheist hospital? That should tell you something.

It’s extremely good to hear that hospitals like this one are being brought into compliance with Church teaching.

What Bishop is this hospital under? Just curious.
