BERLIN: Trust in the Catholic Church in Germany has plummeted since the child sexual abuse scandal.
Barely one in six Germans now say they have confidence in the church. This is accompanied by government statistics showing that people in dioceses affected by paedophile priests are leaving in record numbers.
There is also anger directed at the German-born Pope Benedict. Fewer than one in four say they trust him, according to a poll carried out by Stern magazine published yesterday.
Only 17 per cent of respondents said they trusted the church and 24 per cent the Pope.
Regensburg, where the Pope’s brother, Bishop Georg Ratzinger, was once in charge of the Domspatzen - ‘‘cathedral sparrows’’ - and is now at the centre of abuse allegations, is seeing a wave of disillusioned worshippers leaving.
Munich has lost 472 Catholic worshippers this month alone, nearly four times the number for the past three months.

Last I heard Munich has 1.4 million residents.
Approx 510,000 are Catholics.
If these figures from 2007 are still accurate,
then a loss 470+ worshippers in one month does not seem drastic to me.
It’s less than 1% and while every loss of faith is a
true tragedy, the numbers are not terribly high.

Perhaps they will visit Wittenberg and swim the Elbe.

So once again this just seems to be more twisting from the mainstream media. ‘Title: Germans abandon Catholic Church’ as if all of Germany’s Catholics have walked out of the Church!

Silly!

This doesn’t address the low faith in the Pope though. We can’t move on from this scandal until he addresses these recent claims directly.

Accountability and house-cleaning are the first steps.

Out with the Old Guard…

Dominicans.Inquisition.Spiritual auto de fe.No more homosexuals admitted to seminary.Beg for forgiveness to each victim and person in the world.Pay financial compensation even if it bankrupts every diocese.Remain pristine and above reproach for the next 300 years then MAYBE,MAYBE,we’ll regain a smidgeon of the respect we had prior to VaticanII.

Yes, please join a false Faith that only has a small portion of the Fullness of Truth & was founded by a mere man, Martin Luther!

If you truly believe the false teachings of a mere man, Martin Luther & you believe Lutheranism is the best Faith, the one you have chosen over the Catholic Faith, which was founded by our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, even though you teach at a Catholic school, why don’t you teach at a Lutheran school, or better yet, start a Lutheran school to teach what you believe is the true faith rather than subvert innocent children from the One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Faith?

**Lutheranteach, i pray for you! You are like the wolf among the innocent sheep & your smug arrogance is really hard to bear.
**
Jesus warned us about people like you! “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” (Mt 7:15)

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Yes - out with the Old Guard and in with the Older Guard, those possessed of a properly militant mindset who would not tolerate pederasts or active homosexuals staining the honor of Holy Mother Church. The kind who would sooner call an inquisition to root out such problem elements than try to be silent and whisk away offenders and hope the almighty secular world doesn’t pitch a fit about it.

One can hardly imagine the Church of Urban II, Innocent III, or Pius X putting up with this. The way forward is illuminated by the way we have come.

Gimme that old time religion!

Munich, in Bavaria, is the most Catholic part of Germany.
I have heard that church attendance is at an all-time low.
Nominal membership means nothing.

Well in UK we are short of priests now. Young men are not coming forward…My own Parish Priest is from India, in my daughters parish they are closing the church for want of a priest. Most priests are elderly…All the doctrinal niceties in the world cannot make up for this loss of faith in the priesthood which is general through out Europe. Unlike the USA we faced with constant attacks from militant aetheism whose cause is fed by child abuse scandals and our inward looking doctrinal disputes unrelated to the general thrust of the gospels, In Ireland the effect has been even more devastating.
reading Christ’s message in the gospels I am starting to ponder if many of my fellow Catholics are Christian in the way Christ intended ?

You do know that Stern Maigizine is an Ant-Catholic Publication always has been…

More Germans left the Catholic Church because of the 8% Church Tax; my partner did and now we are uncertain of her ‘status’ in the Catholic Church

So 400 or so people leaving is hardly a true reflection of the the departures due to the scandals

I agree with the measures, but Vatican II was necessary to bring the Church up to date.
No Pope since has said otherwise. If Vatican II was wrong, a new council can be called to rectify any errors. That has not been suggested by anyone in authority.

The world will never ‘respect’ the Pope. And have you even READ what Vat II says? Has anyone?

The secular media (there is NOTHING mainstream about them) loathes the Church and Christ’s Vicar on earth and will do anything to destroy them and to demoralize US.

Will you cave to it?

I do not believe a word of it. I do not believe the above is possible or even wise.

It is the world that should beg Christ’s forgiveness, not the other way round.

And again, my Bavarian friend says ‘Hogwash!’
