I’m living proof that the priest shortage is (at least in part) caused by the vow of celibacy. Decades ago, long before I had ever heard the term “priest shortage”, I was very interested in joining the priesthood. That’s die to the increasingly secular lifestyle, the emphasis on the secular, not a prohibition against marriage.
Marriage is a vocation; the priesthood is a vocation. God doesn’t call a man to both. He doesn’t give him his cake and let him eat it, too.
However, I met a wonderful Catholic girl and chose the path of marriage instead, and I’m sure many others did as well.
With churches bing forced to close due to a lack of priests, many of us would be willing to serve in order to keep these parishes open.
“Give him his cake and let him eat it, too!” HA! You can’t be serious!
As you’ve already made clear in your many responses, being married and serving the Church would be a difficult and thankless path, but many would be willing to do so to keep their churches open.
