Getting Rid of Homosexual Clergy

Just out of mere curiosity,

whats your opinion on homosexual clergy? I hear there’s quite a lot.
What if we got rid of them?
Just want to hear all ideas.
 
I have no issue with homosexual clergy provided they are chaste, as all clergy should be.
 
I don’t think people with SSA or a homosexual past should be allowed in the clergy.
 
Back in the mid-twentieth century, the steep fall in vocations meant that the Church had to lower its standards. When there was an abundance of seminarians in line for ordination, the Church could afford to weed out undesirables. When the supply dried up, it had to take what it could get.

The Church CHOSE to lower it’s standards. Not forced to do anything.
 
We, none of us, are completely pure in our innermost beings. Yet, we, as weak and sinful, are still called by God to the service of others. Priests, laity, all of us, struggle within ourselves and pray that God will conform us to his image. If God called only a perfect people to serve Him, his church would be empty.

But if we are proud of a sin, call attention to it, and flaunt it before God and man, then something needs to be done. The line has been drawn and crossed. Why should it become known if a priest has same sex attraction? Shouldn’t that be between Him, God, and his confessor?

There is a criteria for Deacons as listed in the New Testament. Their reputation had to be beyond reproach. So shouldn’t priests be held to the same standard as deacons according to the scripture?

You’re talking about men who are validly ordained priests? What do you mean by “get rid of”? Laicize? Remove from active ministry?

And how, pray tell, would you identify a closeted homosexual clergyman? That would be quite the witch hunt… 😦
 
I personally don’t have a problem with a priest who has same-sex attraction issues so long as he is chaste, opposes “gay culture” and the acceptance of homosexuality as normal as much as any other priest, and continues to be an example of masculinity for the men in the parish. However, it is my observation that priests who seem to have same-sex attraction tend to fill their parishes with very questionable leaders, relax the teachings on ALL issues related to sexual purity, and drive out those who adhere to church teaching, especially if there are any schools associate with that parish. They create a culture that is very hostile to orthodox Catholicism.

I don’t think the issue is in and of itself exclusionary for priesthood. But I also think that in this climate, with the changes in society we are seeing, as well as the seeming lack of oversight as to what some of these priests are allowing in their parishes for the time being it may need to be a dis-qualifier. I also think that existing priests who confess or are suspected of same sex attraction need to have their parishes examined as far as the culture that is there.

Back in the mid 20th Century, men in their late teens and early 20’s never identified as “homosexual”, it was considered to be a disgrace

And would we just stick to those “perverts” as one person put it (:roll_eyes:) or would we also target clergy who committed other mortal sins???

Why stop there?

Right. Just imagine the feeding frenzy. Personally, I’m not certain I relish the thought of a latter-day witch hunt… 🤷‍♂️

Sorry… as we wait for a grand jury report about clergy abuse to drop here in Western PA, it’s obvious that we’re not yet done with the current witch hunt…
 
inmy diocese a decade ago, it was a hub for homosexual Priests. Mass at my Parish got strange and theatric. Priests were exaggerating effeminate gesturing. Raising the the Host even with an effeminate gesture and a theatrical voice. It was like the Priests were playing for an audience. No, that’s what they were doing. Frankly it disgusted me. Our Bishop got in some trouble for allowing it and got removed. He was kinda flakey. Now our Bishop is conservative. A good Bishop too.It seems the homosexual Priests left too. Don’t know how or what but it’s back to normal. Such a relief to have authentic reverence back.
 
I don’t think its necessarily true that more homosexuals are drawn to the priesthood. If they are celibate I don’t care. We all deal with temptations and I am not one to judge.
 
I think there are some here who regret they were born too late for the Inquisition.
