I was watching this tonight and saw a chair tip over all by itself, not to mention audio of supposed ghosts speaking. Are we allowed to believe in ghosts?
I read something on here about this but can’t find it now.

I have a few thoughts on this topic. I’ll share them, but take everything with a grain of salt. I’m no theologian.

One thing people usually picture when they bring up ghosts is the grainy afterimage type of situation, where one can see a “ghost” performing some specific action related to their lives, such as legends about plantations that have ghostly Civil War soldiers walking through the property and what have you. I do not consider these to be at all impossible. However, I do not consider them spirits in any way. If such phenomena are real, I do not believe them to be sentient, spiritual, or anything of that nature. A video can be recorded and replayed over and over again, and shows the same thing every time. If you decide to watch The Godfather, the actors are not continually performing the same actions in order to play the movie. It’s a recording of something that happened at a point in time and can be reviewed visually. Same idea as with a photograph, essentially. My opinion is that this kind of “ghost” is essentially a quantum photograph or video recording. The information that was created/existed while the “ghost” was performing the action that people claim to have seen is not the soul or spirit of that long-deceased soldier walking through a house, it’s just a video feed, essentially. I have no science whatsoever to back any of this up, mind you, but it’s just my rationalization for if such things were to happen. I’ve never seen it myself, so I don’t even necessarily think it possible, but time and information in the universe in a quantum sense is a pretty complex topic. I wouldn’t consider it impossible, and I also wouldn’t consider it related in any way to the soul of the person viewed.

As far as the more interactive idea of ghosts, we, as Catholics, do believe in souls and the idea that our lives do not end with our death. But we believe that a soul either goes to Purgatory>Heaven upon death, or that it goes to Hell. The soul does not stay on Earth in so literal a sense as to become some sort of interactive invisible entity. For one, there is little to no reason for a soul to want to do that in the first place, although I’m sure God would allow some sort of sign to comfort the loved ones of the deceased, though we shouldn’t expect such a thing to occur. But to entertain that a soul can remain on Earth after the death of their body is not Catholic thought, at least in the way that Ghost Adventures and other such shows propose. I should also point out that apparitions are very different from pop culture ghosts. Many Vatican exorcists believe that tipping chairs, as in your example, would be a sign of demonic activity. Personally, I’m of the opinion that a lot of things can cause chairs to fall over, most of which are not demons, and none of which are human souls.

I have read an account of Eugenie von der Leyen, a German noblewoman to whom God allowed souls from Purgatory to appear, in order to ask her to pray for them essentially. Several of her descriptions remark that the experience was (understandably) quite frightening for her. With this in mind, it could be good practice to pray for a soul in Purgatory when you watch shows like this and start questioning their validity. Or even just in general; the Holy Souls need our prayers. I’m personally quite certain that even if they aren’t staged, there are still myriad explanations for unusual events that don’t resort to claims of supernatural activity.

A few good prayers for the souls in Purgatory that, according to the Enchiridion of Indulgences have partial indulgences attached, are the Memorare, the Hail Holy Queen, and the prayer for eternal rest, which is “Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithfully departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.” There are a lot more, of course, but the Enchiridion won’t fit within the character limit. 😃

The Holy Church has no formal teaching on ghosts.

Although wandering around one’s old life in a pseudo-body forms no part of Church teaching on human afterlife, there is no categoric denial that some may experience this as part of Purgatory.

Most of the time, however, I’d venture that such manifestations are in no way spiritual.

My older sister used to make up ‘ghost stories’ and scare the daylights out of us younger kids. I didn’t like them then and I don’t like them now. I never watch any such thing. God Bless, Memaw

I’ve seen that show a couple of times and can’t change channels fast enough. It has to be one of the stupidest things anyone has ever wasted time on. My family jokingly calls it “the Ghost Bros” because they’re like idiot frat boys calling themselves paranormal investigators. They mess with spirits in ways that only a fool would and sooner or later they’re gonna get in a real serious mess…probably after their so called “show” is off the air.

As for Ghosts…see Do ghosts exist?

I was a paranormal investigator (ghost hunter) during the early 00’s. I haven’t been active since 2006 for several reasons but mainly because I think that it’s a spiritually dangerous venture at best. I went on investigations in various settings; cemeteries, haunted houses, and Eastern State Penitentiary.

I agree with much of what Kurisu35712 has to say; in the second paragraph, that’s a classic description of a residual haunting. There’s no consciousness or intelligence behind it, it’s just a constant replay of events with no communication or interaction. Residual hauntings are essentially psychic imprints in areas where emotionally charged, traumatic events took place. Old buildings and battlefields are commonly known for these types of hauntings.

Intelligent hauntings are the type where the spirit can communicate with the living. They usually have a strong connection to the physical place or wish to relay a message through apparitions, EVPs (electronic voice phenomena), or moving stuff. Gettysburg is a hotbed of activity.

Church Militant, your post is funny and spot on! I really don’t like the Ghost Adventures show because it’s what not to do on an investigation according to the way I was trained. Yes, you do speak to the spirits to introduce yourself and inform them that if they wish to communicate they can do so through any of the gadgets we bring along. But those guys who act confrontational or hostile to provoke a response just isn’t smart. And you never, ever work alone.

I suspect a lot of creative editing goes on for these shows as well. When my team and I spent the night in Eastern State, we got our fair share of EVPs and photo phenomena, but nothing like portrayed on these shows. As an example, there was an episode of MTVs Fear where a bunch of young folks got locked into the prison overnight; there was an electric chair on a room on Death Row and some scary “phenomena” that occurred. That chair was a prop brought in by the producers. Of the 80 or so inmates that passed through Death Row, none were executed on the premises, they were brought elsewhere for execution. Makes me wonder how much else is staged for shock value.

I have plenty of ghost stories for sure. These days I pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for those who cannot find rest, and for anyone who is forgotten or have no one to pray for them. :signofcross:

PS – one of the truly scary stories I’ve heard was from one of the members of my ghost hunting club who was with us on our trip to Eastern State. When she got home the next day, despite our precautions to smudge with sage and all that, she felt a dreadful presence in her home that night that was accompanied by the musty smell of the prison. That cured me. I never want something like that to attach to me.

I find the host of that show to be especially irritating. I change channels too.

I remember a scene where a priest warns Zach, the host not to mess around with the spiritual world and to cease his investigations. Zach replied that all he got was a scratch from the demonic spirit. The priest then replied that Zach should not only think of the physical harm but an even greater spiritual harm. Needless the say, Zach ignored this priest’s warning.

What do you think the chair tipping over (it was checked and there was no problem with the legs), or conversations with the “ghosts” on the show are?

Yeah that and the fact that they have on several occasions invited spirits to possess them and then displayed weird behaviors makes me believe that they are just rolling the dice for pay which is foolish in the extreme.

Meaning they’re faking it or taking chances with demons?

If the latter, doesn’t that contradict our faith that teaches there aren’t ghosts, except possibly people from purgatory?

When Jesus first appeared to the Apostles after his crucifixion, they first thought he was a ghost, this shows they had a word for such a thing back then and knew what a ghost was, so its likely people were seeing the same kinds of things as today.

I have no idea what they are though, Ive seen one exactly ONE time, and it was just a transparent ball, sort of grayish/ black in color, all it did was bounce around the ceiling of a stairwell for about 5 minutes, it didnt appear to be good or evil, just neutral, I didnt have happy or frightful feelings upon seeing it, so…??

My dad used to work installing A/C units in older buildings that hadn’t been built with them. He once told me that one of his friends worked for a company that gave tours of old allegedly haunted buildings, in New Orleans to boot. The camera crew and production department had people they would hire (since this was a produced thing, though the participants were unaware that there were other crew members), my dad’s friend being one of them, who would go in and do things like release bats into the attic, open doors, and so on. Apparently the guy fell over trying to place one of the props, making a huge echoing sound in this old New Orleans home. The people staying the night, with a few alleged psychics, not realizing there was a crew, were absolutely convinced the house was haunted.

But, like Ghost Adventures, this was for a production created for entertainment purposes. It’s reality TV, not a news report. Regarding the chair tipping over for no discernible reason, there are quite a few explanations that don’t involve any kind of supernatural entity. For one, the floor may not have been as level as it is supposed to be. Not only can this cause vertigo, even at otherwise imperceptible degrees due to the floor making one slightly off-balance, it is one potential reason for the chair to fall over. Of course, it also could have been set up to happen. It’s not as though these shows don’t have cuts between scenes. As for the voice recordings, I doubt you would even hear anything resembling coherent speech if the subtitles weren’t provided while the audio plays. Psychologists consider EVP to be a form of auditory pareidolia, which is the same phenomenon that causes us to see figures and animals in clouds, or a face in the moon or a piece of toast. I’m not saying such phenomena are completely impossible, but don’t give in to the confirmation bias presented by these shows if it stops being entertaining and starts actually affecting your life and perception.

The “you” in that last sentence isn’t necessarily you, Faith1960, just a “you” as general advice to anyone reading the thread.

Yes, I find it interesting that we are warned against any type of communication with them…why is this even possible, is it that God knows they are good at tricking us into believing false things, or is it something else?

The more we push God out of our society, the easier it is for the devil to push his way into our imaginations, lives etc. These kinds of programs condition our minds to accept this sort of thing as normal. We are being conditioned and don’t even realize it!!! Especially our kids with Harry Potter etc. Look around!! If Catholics would spend much more time with Our Lord and His Catholic Church, we wouldn’t have time for all this dangerous stuff. Get our priorities straight!!! God Bless, memaw

Because in all likelihood, what we perceive as “ghosts” are not dead human beings at all, but deceptive spirits using our longing for trans-death communication to mess with our heads.

I wouldn’t waste time or eye-strength on a ghost show. If it’s not rigged to draw viewership, it’s deception of an even worse kind.

If this was not rigged to draw viewership (most likely case), then it may indeed have been spiritual, but in no way human, rather demonic.

Yeah, I think they’ve said that they could be demonic on the show.
They often visit old, abandoned prisons where the dead were violent criminals.

I have watched a few of those shows. they are definitely edited and fake as far as I am concerned. I guarantee every episode you will hear “what was that?” or “did you hear that?” or “look!”. then they have their recordings that play back that could easily have been manipulated. Those shows don’t prove anything to me. Another way for someone to get 15 minutes of fame and some money in their pocket.

They never investigate a location that doesn’t have any “activity.”
