There is nothing wrong with the use of incense. It just has no use in Catholic exorcisms. The smoke will not clear away unclean spirits.

I used to be involved in the occult, palmistry, seances, ouija boards. I’ve had things bothering me ever since, even after I became Catholic and had renounced it all. I had opened the door and it is very hard to close it again.

The last one, here, is actually something that roams the neighbourhood. It is not linked to my house, but seems to be attached to the house across the street. I’ve spoken with all my neighbours and they’ve had weird things happen. Across the street, they’ve had really bad things happen. A man hung himself in the back yard, a woman got her head bashed in with a brick and another got stabbed in the liver. I never heard if she lived or not. The last incident, a man ran amok with a newly sharpened samurai sword. These were all visitors to the house, not the residents.

I had my home blessed by our parish priest. It did not keep it out. I had to use the blessed salt and holy water twice, in lay exorcism, to get rid of it. The last time, I was halfway through and was inspired to pray in tongues instead of using the set prayers. I could feel the spirits then. It wasn’t just one. In the last room, I could almost hear them, my skin was tingling and my hair standing up but I persevered.

That was 5 years ago and I’ve had no problems here since. No evil presence, no evil smell.

If after having your home blessed by your priest, you still have problems, you can either use the lay exorcism prayers or ask your priest to exorcise your home.

By all means, discuss this with your priest.

With the incense, do not use it as Ashurie recommended doing. Incense does not cleanse anything. It is used in Christian prayer, but only as an enhance to prayer. It can make your prayer more effective because of the atmosphere it gives off, or because of its symbolism. Do not ever treat it as if the incense itself can solve your problem. To do so is to commit the sin of superstition, and to be regressing back to your older occult practices.
Thanks Biedrik. I have to say I don’t think I would feel very comfortable using incense anymore, because for me, I would relate it to my old occult days. 😦

I have used Holy Water, and will get some salt blessed soon by my parish Priest.
And also, if he doesn’t mind, blessing my house, that would be perfect. 👍

Angel Eyes,

Hello and God Blees. I am so happy to hear you have come back to god from the occult practices, that is a good, good thing.

As to what your son is seeing how does he describe them. they maybe his guardian angel and or other angels watching over him to protect him.
Thank you, it is SO lovely to be back with God 😃

I did ask my son to try to describe how they looked. He said they have faces but couldn’t say much else. I asked him if he feels comfortable with them, like they will not harm him, or do they make him feel scared. He said he doesn’t like it when they are there. Interestingly, he said they have only been in his room for a few days he told me. He is not usually one to lie about things, and I can’t risk not believing him, so will have to do more I think, for sure.

Angels Eyes,
I hope you won’t consider it an intrusion for me to suggest that maybe something beneficial you and your son could do together is to read directly from the Bible out loud together, with your son learning to read by you helping him with some of the verses–such as in Matthew 5, an easy chapter with a lot of good messages. Maybe this would show the spirits that you and he are stronger than they are, and they would go away. (He could also try and remember some of the verses and say them out loud if he does see them at night.)

Best wishes for peace for your family.

This is something that I would like to ask my priest about. Because instead of viewing incense as a symbol that enhances prayer, I have always viewed it as a prayer in itself. If using incense to get rid of a demon is superstitious, than how is using holy water not superstitious? In the EO Church incense is used a lot and I know a priest who sensed that there was a demon in a church and made sure to cense the area of the church that he sensed it (sorry to use the word “sense” a lot but I couldn’t think of a better word to use).

As I quoted before, it is not the Holy Water and Blessed Salt of themselves which dispel evil, but the blessings on them. They are Sacramentals.

While the Benedictine incense may be blessed, I don’t know if it was done by a priest or what prayers were used. You could ask and find out. Definitely, you can use this while praying.
newadvent.org/cathen/13292d.htm
The sacramentals do not produce sanctifying grace ex opere operato, by virtue of the rite or substance employed, and this constitutes their essential difference from the sacraments.

One of the most remarkable effects of sacramentals is the virtue to drive away evil spirits whose mysterious and baleful operations affect sometimes the physical activity of man. To combat this occult power the Church has recourse to exorcism and sacramentals.

ParkerD, thank you.🙂 This is a very lovely idea. We sometimes read his children’s Bible together…well, I read it. Both of my children enjoy it a lot. Reading from mine could be a good idea. Certainly won’t do any harm of course. Another thing worth trying. 👍

Thanks again, God Bless.

PRAY FOR THEM[BIBLEDRB][/BIBLEDRB]

As a child I used to ‘see ghosts’… The earth bound … ‘stuck’ souls… I would see in ‘solid’ form…

My Mum and Dad told me to not be afraid they were just lost souls needing help to move forward so I was to taught to say…

Eternal rest upon (him/ her /them) Oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon (him/ her /them) may (he/ she /they) rest in peace. Amen.

Yup there were times I was afraid but I never came to any harm I just kept a pray’n…

And then as a teenager I prayed that I wouldn’t see / feel these things anymore… and they stopped…

I’m sorry , but negative energies? incense to cleanse? Is this the voodoo forum or what? 3 or 5 year olds suppose to be seeing monsters and boogie men, it is called bad dreams and imagination!!! C’mon people get back to the faith!!

Just to make it clear prayers should be used with the incense. And in no way at all does Christian prayer and Christian incense constitute “voodoo.” I’m not saying that’s what you said, I just want to be clear that incense and prayer are totally 100% Catholic. I know of monasteries that sell home censers for icon corners for the faithful to use at their homes. Although I am Orthodox I’m positive it doesn’t go against Catholic beliefs. If I’m wrong somebody let me know.

Thanks for that. 🙂 It is nice to hear from someone who has actually ‘seen’ them, as I myself haven’t. The prayer sounds good, I will say it with my son tonight. 😉

My Son said that he sees ghosts in his bedroom. I do believe in the unseen, and have heard that most children can see them, but take no notice, because to them, this is normal.

We discussed it. I told him that I think they are not here to hurt him and maybe just to tell them, they are not welcome here in his room and to please go away. I had some Holy Water and although I have sprinkled my house just recently (due to me being involved in Occult activities in the past - I wanted to rid it of any evil :() so I did a quick sprinkle in his room last night and asked Saint Michael to protect this house and my son’s room. This reassured him, and he thought it was a bit of fun (he is only 5) so he went off to sleep.

I am concerned though. There was a time when I would have loved to hear that my son could see ghosts/spirits, now that I have accepted God back into my life and do not do Occult/Spiritualism things anymore, I am actually quite scared.

Any ideas, anything else I can do/try?
Dear Angels Eyes,

In the bible, we can see that the main job of the devil is to keep human being away from God. Am I correct? Here in Indonesia, we have plenty of “ghosts” stories. Our common perception about ghost, is they make people scared. In our cultural habits, when people get scared from “ghost” they refer back to God. That what makes me wonder. If the devil send the ghost to scare people, that will make us go back toward God. If that so, their mission would fail, because they want us to be away from God. In conclusion, anything or anyone who send us back to God, cannot be from the devil.

Remember. The devil cannot harm us by its own will/power. But, they can fool us so we harm ourselves, by committing sins.

Keep on praying, and believe that praying makes our relationship with God get closer and stronger. At that point, nothing can scare us.

Thanks ‘Swariffin’. You made some good points, and I agree with what you said that the devil cannont harm us, but only fool us. This is something I have experienced 1st hand.😦

I am just a very recent Catholic Revert, so am still getting use to prayer again. I do believe there is power in prayer, and I am certainly wishing and hoping for a closer relationship to God. So will continue with this for sure. 🙂

Get. A. Priest.

Best advice I can give.

I’ve dealt with spirits and I’ve seen some doozeys in my time, and while the majority of them I can hurry on their way with the words:

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command any and all spirits, principalities and demons that are not of the Lord God to return to the divinely appointed place, and I wash this house clean from the top of the ceiling to the lowest foundation in the Precious Blood of the Lamb.

No offence, but frankly, the idea of some smelly incense chasing away spirits sounds like a load of a word that would be censored if I typed it in.

The other thing you can use is the Rosary, its an incredibly powerful weapon against demons.

Otherwise, tell your son to pray for these souls, if they are truely “ghosts” then perhaps they are those in purgatory asking for intercession.

If not. Priest. Priest. Priest. Honestly, I cannot stress this enough, I have seen some real nasty stuff turn pear shaped in a hurry when people have marched into a situation with a demonic or spiritual presence without the proper knowledge or resources.

I agree with your advice, yet I don’t understand your view on incense. It was used in the early church’s liturgy, it’s still used in the modern RC liturgy during certain times of the year, and in the eastern tradition it is not uncommon for people to use incense at their homes. What about holy water? Does using holy water sound like a load of ##### as well :D" I’m not trying to sound offensive or hurtful, I’m just curious as to why there are Catholics here who don’t think using incense could be useful at all. Is it possibly because it isn’t used in the novus ordo liturgy really and you’re just not used to it? It’s used in every EO liturgy so maybe I’m just more used to it, I don’t know. Thoughts?

With all due respect, is this thread for real? I’ve been away from the forums for a while, and threads like these are one of the reasons why.

Am I the only one thinking, mmm, 5 year old, dark room alone at night, spooky stuff enters mind? Seriously folks, is this is a Catholic forum, or a place to discuss ghost stories? I’m not being sarcastic here, but give me a break with some of these responses.

I think it’s time, before I say something that sends me private messages again, to leave these forums and try to find a bit more traditional, realistic place to discuss The Faith.

Here’s a simple idea that works… I used to have the same issue as a child.
Tell him that when they come back he should tell them to “Leave in the name of Jesus!”.
His name is of enough authority…

Well yeah, I thought it could be the 5 year old’s imagination as well. But really I have no idea what it is. No matter what, it is a good idea to get the room (really the whole house) blessed by a priest. There is no harm in getting this done.

Hi Rotlex,

I was the one that started this thread. 😉 I posted it here because it was under the ‘Non-Catholic Religions’ section, and I thought ‘maybe’ this was the correct place to post. 🤷

I really just wanted opinions of what others have experienced, if anything, and everyone on the forum has been wonderful with their different views.
I did not mean to offend anyone, and I am sorry if you are feeling this. As I am just a very recent Catholic Revert, I thought that if we believe in the Devil, we believe in ‘other’ negative forces too. So that Ghosts could be a part of our world also. Where there is light, there is darkness, right?

I hope you don’t leave the forum, due to this ‘out there’ thread, as there are so many great people here willing to help and answer any questions for you and vice versa, I bet you give great advice too. 🙂

Warm regards and God Bless,
Angels Eyes.

I disagree. Even acknowledging the fact that the devil exists is enough proof for God, or the existence of a god. That is the reason why the Devil makes it seem as if he does not exist. Because the moment people know that he exists, it is only logical to therefore acknowledge that God exists, which in turn will encourage people to have belief in God once again.

That is one of the paradoxes of the Devil. . .his very own existence is proof of God, a proof which he much despises.

Thank you,
