With Labour as part of the government, the hatred of Catholicism continues to find official expression. Moves against Catholic education are ongoing, with one Labour member of Parliament going so far as to say that there was no place for a Catholic educational ethos in a modern republic; one local Labour party branch has called for a screening of civil servants for signs of excessive Catholicism; and this Vatican debacle was never on the agenda until Labour got elected.
There is definitely an anti-Catholic environment in Ireland now, to the extent that I would go so far as to call it a culture-war. It has even gone so far that the national broadcaster was forced to apologize for broadcasting false claims of rape against a good priest. I would be surprised if there is not at least one push to liberalize our abortion laws, but I would not be surprised if it succeeded. We are under siege, so God help us.
