I grew up in the New York metropolitan area, and for people of my generation, Irish = Catholic - period! I don’t know a single Irish-American (and I know many) who aren’t staunchly Catholic. It’s hard for us to understand these developments in Ireland, the land of St. Patrick, Equal to the Apostles.
:irish3:

You know different ones than I do. 😉

And, it may be a generational thing. While I’d agree with you about the Irish of several decades ago, I don’t see that their young maintain that tradition anywhere as well today.

Life in Little Rock or elsewhere may be different. I’m not that old, and did share that this is my experience with my Irish-American friends in NYC metro. Like with anything, people and circumstances may be different elsewhere …

I was born in Brooklyn, went to an elite Jesuit HS in Manhattan - Regis, and was graduated from Fordham University. Dated lots of Irish girls, too. So, my experience with the Irish is consistent with having Irish friends in NY 1955-1963. Hardly any here in LR.

I’m a little younger than you, and many of my Irish friends new immigrants or first generation.

Must have been the 60s! 😃

Hope life in Little Rock is treating you well!

Politicians brandishing rosary beads? My faith in Ireland has been restored :D!

With Labour as part of the government, the hatred of Catholicism continues to find official expression. Moves against Catholic education are ongoing, with one Labour member of Parliament going so far as to say that there was no place for a Catholic educational ethos in a modern republic; one local Labour party branch has called for a screening of civil servants for signs of excessive Catholicism; and this Vatican debacle was never on the agenda until Labour got elected.
There is definitely an anti-Catholic environment in Ireland now, to the extent that I would go so far as to call it a culture-war. It has even gone so far that the national broadcaster was forced to apologize for broadcasting false claims of rape against a good priest. I would be surprised if there is not at least one push to liberalize our abortion laws, but I would not be surprised if it succeeded. We are under siege, so God help us.

Totally agree.

I’ve sent my postcard asking Enda Kenny to invite the Pope and reinstate the embassy, today. I’ve also mailed cards to other family members to complete and mail.
Good afternoon, all,

As a child, I loved to hear two great-uncles direct from Ireland talk. I loved their brogue. That’s my main claim to my interest in Irish affairs.

I go along with Fine Gael. Expenses for two embassies could have been covered with collecting private donations to finance the Vatican embassy, maybe?

And, I believe that the Catholic Church in Ireland is under attack by elitist or progressive forces, just like here in America. And, I see this as the plainest form of religious prejudice or bigotry, against us Catholics in each nation.

God loves all of you and yours, lurkers, too,
Don
