Well said, but if I may add to this. The secular left says that abortion is a choice.
Another way of putting this is that the secular left says it is ok to take a life if it makes your life easier. I have never understood how a group that should know better that the leaders of their party are brainwashing them to accept the taking of a human life.
I really feel that most of the democrat leaning Catholics continue to be democrats because they have the attitude that hey will vote based on “what is in it for me” rather than what is right.
The mind of the liberal Democrat Catholics baffles me. The liberal Democrat catholic will argue that they are all about “healthcare for the poor” all the while ignoring the slaughter of the unborn. My own view is that they don’t think abortion is all that bad. Just another issue among many, and not the top issue. We all know the arguments of the liberal Democrat catholic. The politicians like Biden I attribute to their thirst for power. Why do catholics vote for those politicians? Easy - they vote for them because they love the pet liberal issues more than they hate abortion.

Very well said, Monte. What liberals don’t understand is that its not warmongerism to defend your interests or come to the rescue of an ally. Indeed, there must have been a better way in Korea - maybe if north Korea wasn’t run by trigger happy nuts and not invaded south Korea then there would have been peace. (I understand Dean Acheson’s speech may have emboldened Kim Il Sung to invade). Had we not come to the rescue of the Koreans, what would have the communists have done? Hard to say. If they had not not encountered any opposition then its likely that they would have been emboldened to keep marching into other areas. We had a monopoly on nuclear bombs at the time and were in a position to use them without “mutual assured destruction” happening. We obviously didn’t but I read that Eisenhower hinted through diplomatic channels that he was considering using nuclear weapons if the north didn’t agree to a ceasefire.

A shameful episode in our history is the abandonement of South Vietnam by liberal Democrats in the 1970’s. The liberal Democrat Mcgovern wing of the Democrat party tied the hands of Nixon and later Ford so that they couldn’t even provide crucial air support to repel the North Vietnamese army as it marched south in an invasion that broke the Paris Peace Accords. But communists do that, don’t they. And liberals call themselves peacemakers because they refuse to do anything to defend their allies. Shameful.

The liberal Democrats called Reagan a warmonger. All he did was support a strong military, research and fund SDI, conspire with Pope John Paul 2 and Thatcher to give the crucial push to topple the Soviet communist empire once and for all. Without a shot, almost. And the Nobel Peace prize goes to Carter of all people 🤷

**Sorry that I did';t document my assertions re Bolton**. I assumed everyone here is aware of his views.
I know his views. I just haven’t seen anything that indicates you do.

Just a quick update.
Code:
** In praising Ike, I certainly realize that North Korea invaded South Korea**. (I have spent time in South Korea and am reasonably well-acquainted with its history.) It was Ike, however, who had the wisdom and guts to get us out of there instead of a continuing huge land war which by then involved large numbers of Chinese troops.

**Bolton represents the bomb-'em-at-the-drop-of-a-hat policy**. He always seems angry and full of rage, I suspect that he would want to bomb Iran soon, He certainly would support an Israeli attack. Must we always be at war?
** The other night I was watching some sort of musical program on PBS. It was being held in Moscow** . Much of the music was classical, but some popular US numbers were on the program. As I looked over the audience, I couldn’t help but think: thank God we didn’t go to war with these people, who love the music as I do, obviously people much like we are here in America. Such foolishness to hate them. If the Boltons and other alarmists would leave us alone I would hope that the good people of the world, the vast majority, would not be pushed into killing one another. In our time the ones to die in large numbers are innocent young men and women who are patriots, serving their country in the military, and innocent civilians murdered by the thousands with modern means of extermination. Whenever I watch stories of brave young soldiers returning home without legs my admiration for their courage is mixed with deep sadness that we have to kill and maim one another instead of talking and resolving.

** I would like to see my beloved country make a sincere effort to try the Christian principle of love in its dealings with the rest of the world**. Putting our trust in God is an idea that I personally embrace. No, not pacifism in the face of evil, but adopting a perspective that focuses on friendship rather than always looking for enemies. I guess I will never abandon what I feel is the Christian approach to such questions.
** God bless America and all the world.**I'm a proud patriot, lucky to have been born in this country, and feel that true patriotism doesn't lead us down the path that leads to perpetual war. We are strong enough still as a nation to serve as a superb model for the rest of humankind. We ought to give it a serious try.

Well…sort of. You know we are still there, right?

The secular leftists have hoodwinked those of faith who believe that government is the best route for helping the poor and elderly, providing healthcare, etc. into looking the other way or otherwise apologize for the views of the secular left which are a 180 degree turn away from faith - such as the social engineering, the support for abortion, the increasing hostility toward the Church, the undermining of the family unit in favor of the government unit - "
Democrat side. But the GOP is not controlled by the secular left like the Democrat party is, and, in the final analysis, what else is there? What party represents the strongest opposition to Obama and the secular left? It is the GOP. Ultimately, all Catholics and Christians must choose which side they are on. Ishii
ishii, I don’t believe all voters agree across the board with a political party’s platform.
Neither party presents a utopia.
When a party nominates a candidate I cannot in good conscience vote for one who will not work to rid our nation of what I consider a very evil law, In good conscience I can’t give him my vote,no matter all the other good presented and even with that nothing is ever perfect on either side. We try to do the best we can in our discernment and the trust God completely! Peace and good will to you, Carlan

You do mean the abortion law? I am assuming that is what you mean.

Well…sort of. You know we are still there, right?
And the People’s Republic of China did send in a million or so troops into the Korean peninsula to prevent the utter defeat of the North Korean army.

It is largely about two different visions: that of the secular left which seeks to make faith in government the new religion, or the other vision, which still believes that while government is necessary, what really matters is faith, family, community and country. You might say, “but people of faith support the leftist secular vision you describe.” And that is true. The secular leftists have hoodwinked those of faith who believe that government is the best route for helping the poor and elderly, providing healthcare, etc. into looking the other way or otherwise apologize for the views of the secular left which are a 180 degree turn away from faith - such as the social engineering, the support for abortion, the increasing hostility toward the Church, the undermining of the family unit in favor of the government unit - “free govt daycare for all children!” We can do better, Cmatt. We ought not to choose a system that the secular leftists want. It is a system that doesn’t recognize God as the ultimate arbiter but government. Both cannot exist together. The secular leftist system cannot survive with a robust and flourishing Church. We must choose which side we are on. This choice is not like choosing what flavor ice cream to eat. It is not like choosing to vote for a Democrat or Republican in the 50’s, or even the 70’s. It is simply a choice between enabling the ideology of the secular left by voting for Obama or of opposing the secular left by not voting for Obama. It may come as a surprise to you that the GOP is not the opposite of the secular left. There are scoundrels on the GOP side just as on the Democrat side. But the GOP is not controlled by the secular left like the Democrat party is, and, in the final analysis, what else is there? What party represents the strongest opposition to Obama and the secular left? It is the GOP. Ultimately, all Catholics and Christians must choose which side they are on.

Ishii before I throw my hands up into the air on this thread, you make a blanket statement about people of faith on the left which is simply not true. People of faith on the left believe government can play a greater role than your side does for sure. This does not necessarily mean however they think government is a superior route to faith groups and individuals. There are plenty less fortunate still in need after 2000 yrs for all to play a robust and flourishing role.

Carlan said a mouthful when she said each of us regardless of our political persuasion, try to do the best we can in our discernment and that neither party is utopia So be assured I am not surprised when you inform me that there are “scoundrels on the GOP side” just as on the Democratic side.

But since you have expressed you are still baffled after all that the conservative side has been presented here in this thread by the rest of us, I shall now throw my hands into the air. 🤷

And as have others such as Carlan and Roy, God’s blessings and peace are wished upon you Ishii and to all.

People of faith on the left evidenlty believe children are expendable in the quest for the “greater good” .Uncounted millions have died over the years for “the greater good”

Your heart does not seem to be listening Estebob, not all blindly believe every thing in their particular party’s platform, left or right . God judges each of His children individually when it comes to discerning good and evil, To me you do appear to pound all your views into the ground and break them off, Peace, to you and good will in your discernment. I dont have to listen to my heart. I just need to follow the teachings of the Church. A Catholic can not directly or indirectly support abortion. no issue or combination of issudes can mitigate a canidates support for abortion. That is what our Chruch teaches.

Those whose hearts are pure are temples of the Holy Spirit.

Yes, and all hearts will still be judged by God after the present life ends. We are all sinners and another human being cannot know the ins and outs of another’s deep heart,no matter what is conceived to be so on the surface.
Not knowing for sure, praying for all such sinners wouldbe a better thing and trusting in the Father for them.
Peace and good will, Carlan

Cmatt, I don’t want you to throw your hands up into the air. But how else can I explain the support of liberal catholics for a party that represents the goals and policies of the secular left which are opposed to the Catholic church, particularly on social issues but also on others? What baffles me is how the liberal catholic (or christian) can treat these crucial social issues like any other issue. Is there anything that the secular leftist leadership of the Democrat party would propose that would have you question your allegiance to them? Or are you ok with all of the bad simply because they fund programs to help the poor? (nevermind that the poor aren’t helped by these programs, but thats a different subject).
Carlan said a mouthful when she said each of us regardless of our political persuasion, try to do the best we can in our discernment and that neither party is utopia So be assured I am not surprised when you inform me that there are “scoundrels on the GOP side” just as on the Democratic side.
I am trying to help you discern the nature of the secular left and its effect on the Democrat party and get you (and anyone else following this thread) to consider re-thinking support for the leftist secular agenda as represented by the modern national Democrat party. The left didn’t control the Democrat party in “the good old days” but they do now. I think liberal catholics can do better than support the goals of the secular left.
But since you have expressed you are still baffled after all that the conservative side has been presented here in this thread by the rest of us, I shall now throw my hands into the air. 🤷

I deeply resent your implication that the Cold War was fought because we “hated the people”. Far from it. Instead, we hated the evil atheist system called communism that characterized the Soviet Union. Saying we “hate” them was always the standard liberal accusation against those who merely didn’t want to bend over and surrender to the communists. I am glad that freedom won over Soviet communism, and that our leaders didn’t listen to the kind of words and sentiment expressed above. Such words are misguided at best, traitorious at worst.

No, not all voters agree across the board, but in the case of liberal catholics, they have to live with their willingness to ignore the Democrat left’s opposition to the teachings of the Catholic church on matters of the sanctity of life.

I would agree with you - I can’t give my vote to someone who won’t work to rid our nation of evil laws (like Roe V Wade) either. The point is that liberal Democrat catholics can and do give their vote for a candidate who not only won’t work to rid the bad law, but will actively work to extend and protect the evil law! And now can’t you see why I am baffled by liberal Democrat catholics? Would you agree?

ishii Sorry to break it to you, but when we go to war hate becomes a standard commodity. I am a senior who recalls the hatred peddled during WWII. The manner in which ‘Japs’ were depicted was outrageous. The Germans were treated a bit better, but there was this effort to present Germans as Nazis. Were there any ‘good Germans’ became an issue that was hotly debated.

** In any case, if we had gone to war with the USSR many of those people in the concert hall likely would have been killed.** What was it, 60 million who were slaughtered during WWII? I saw the ruins of Cologne and Franfurt, Dusseldorf and Frankford. Tragic. And tragic, of course, in Amsterdam and London, Dresden and Warsaw, Leningrad and Nanking, Tokyo, Saipan and Manila, Hiroshima and Nagasaki - which two cities, incidentally, were the Protestant and Catholic venters in Japan.

** It always puzzles me that many who are quick to advocate and support war - bomb 'em back into the stone age - can also be so fervently anti-abortion.** Think of all the innocent - adults, children, yes babies in the womb - killed in war, including soldiers who become cannon-fodder to slay the enemy. We need to be consistent. If it is a major sin to take innocent life in the womb whatever other factors may prevail, why doesn’t this apply to killing innocent people in war, also?
The older I get the more urgent I feel the need for Christians to consistently seek to treasure and save human life. I have enormous admiration for such groups as the Quakers and Mennonites who try to follow the Sermon on the Mount, so often but ignored by most of us. "Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?" Guess who said that. Luke 6:46.
