I think Newt is clever enough to bring the conversation to the topic, his policies, and to deflect the “gotcha” questions. 😃

I’m sure that is exactly what TheTrueLiberal is trying to say.
 
I personally know several people who are trying to come into the Catholic Church. Some have been married several times. Each of them has told me they never realized the sacramental aspect of marriage before studying Catholicism.

Divorce is so normal in our culture, many people don’t think twice about the appropriateness of remarriage after divorce.

I was listening to Steve Wood (theology school classmate of Scott Hahn) on the radio this morning and he talked about the same subject. Before he became Catholic, he was on a Protestant church board when they voted to allow communion to remarried divorced couples. Within ten years, the divorce rate increased dramatically in that congregation. He had no idea what the Catholic Church’s teaching on divorce and remarriage was (incredibly).

I don’t think we should hold Newt’s behavior to Catholic standards prior to his conversion. :twocents:

Clinton was being impeached for lying under oath, not for having an affair.

Yep. “It’s the economy, stupid.” That’s why I think it will be interesting for Obama to go the personal route. I’m kind of hoping he does. 😛

Ya, Obama will go after Newt’s personal failings and Newt will go after Obama’s professional ones.

No opponent is mentioning his Mormonism, but the word is passed around: “Mormons are not Christians, and Christians can’t vote for a Mormon.”

They view him as a hypocrite. Yes, and the Tiffany account is indicative of what some see as his priorities. What does he know or care about the needy in our society when he can charge $60,000 for a speech and has a $500,000 credit account at an elitist jewelry outlet?

** I wish there were a candidate out there who might win and whom one could really support**. I’m an independent with a long GOP heritage who likes to vote Republican when that is possible. For awhile I thought Perry might be that person, but his star faded because of his bumbling with the language and some obvious misstatement of simple facts (like the voting age). I wouldn’t count him out yet, frankly, if Newt’s popularity fades as the case is made against him. I suspect that millions of devout evangelicals will have lots of trouble with Newt’s divorces and remarriages, plus his efforts on behalf of Freddie Mac, which seemed to suggest that he will abandon principle if paid well enough. I admire the courage and consistency of Ron Paul, but his position on some domestic issues is too close to anarchism. I do applaud his anti-war stance.

Wow. Your Christian charity is remarkable. I wasn’t the best of people before my conversion, so I guess I’m the worst of the worst?

And “perfection” has now been acheived? I don’t see the purpose of confession any more…under these circumstances. I do believe the Church is correct though in leaving that in.😃

Who claimed perfection? Are you in search of the “perfect” man/woman to be candidate for office? Do you have reason to believe that Gingrich doesn’t go to Confession?

Personally, I confess regularly…weekly sometimes. While I’m not as terrible a person as I was before conversion, I am still a work in progress.

Newt better duck, the Christian liberals are going to be throwing stones. Apparently if a conservative converts and tries to change their life it must be for political gain. I wonder if there is a double standard there…
