NEW YORK Long a lightning rod for conservative criticism, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now facing their highest-level challenge yet: An official inquiry by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

At issue are concerns about program materials that some Catholics find offensive, as well as assertions that the Scouts associate with other groups espousing stances that conflict with church teaching. The Scouts, who have numerous parish-sponsored troops, deny many of the claims and defend their alliances.

The inquiry coincides with the Scouts’ 100th anniversary celebrations and follows a chain of other controversies.

Earlier this year, legislators in Indiana and Alaska publicly called the Scouts into question, and the organization was berated in a series aired by a Catholic broadcast network. Last year, the Scouts angered some conservatives by accepting into a Colorado troop a 7-year-old transgender child who was born a boy but was being raised as a girl.

The new inquiry will be conducted by the bishops’ Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. It will look into the Scouts’ “possible problematic relationships with other organizations” and various “problematic” program materials, according to a letter sent by the committee chairman, Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne, Ind., to his fellow bishops.

The bishops’ conference provided a copy of the letter to The Associated Press, but otherwise declined comment.

I really believe that the Bishops need to move carefully. At the moment they are in a somewhat strong position regarding social issues…something like this could become a classic case of over-playing your hand.

I don’t know. GSUSA isn’t even supported by the BSA
Perception is reality in cases like this, and the danger, IMHO, is that many will perceive this as the Bishops picking on the poor little Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scouts give to planned parenthood. Really planned murder.

Perception and over playing a hand should never be considered when you are talking about people’s souls.

I have been concerned about the Girl scouts when many years ago they promoted many things that were not Christian. I am glad that the Bishops are doing this. My grandchildren attend Girl Scout meetings at a Catholic School. I would like to know that they are not being taught contrary to the faith.

What Jeffery states is just one thing to be concerned about.

The GSUSA is part of an umbrella group that supports planned parenthood, abortion on demand, and gay rights. ANd their cookies aren’t even that good.

WE pulled out of GS and moved our daughter into American Heritage Girls.

I think its rather obvious that it would not live up to the standards of the Bishops. Conducting an inquiry into whether or not a non-Catholic organization is Catholic enough seems to be a farcical endeavor to me.

I don’t get why these programs take the money they were given and then redistribute it to Planned Parenthood?
  • When I give money to the GS, then I expect it to be used by the Girl Scouts
  • Same goes for Susan G. Komen, I expect my donations to be for curing cancer
The Girl Scouts give to planned parenthood. Really planned murder.

An inquiry into whether or not a non-Catholic organization is Catholic enough? What do the Bishops expect?
No. An inquiry into whether this girls organization teaches things that are contrary to the Catholic faith. If so, then the bishops will begin to remove their sponsorship of GS units. Why should the Church sponsor groups that oppose the faith? GIrl Scouts is a completely secular organization. Its parent group actively promotes and supports planned parenthood and similar groups.

Many Catholic Churches sponsor Girl Scout units. If it is found that the girl scouts promote ideas that are contrary to the Catholic faith, they will stop sponsoring these units. Is this really that complicated, or do you just enjoy being contrarian?

Actually it’s a perfect way to let faithful Catholics know if an organization adheres to our accepted teachings.

As Catholics we should know if non-Catholic organizations accept as normal what are considered in the Catholic faith disordered tendendices.

This is not what is being done. It is inquiry into whether the organization presents a danger to catholic girls.

To not do this would be negligence of the Bishop’s duty.
