Its about time the USCCB investigated the GSA.
Those think mints are clearly heretical.
Those think mints are clearly heretical.
It begins to scare me. What is the Catholic Church trying to do? The Girl Scouts are part of the fabric of US society. My daughter was a member and what wonderful experiences she has.
The Church has to beware of alienating more and more Americans. Should everyone have to cater to the Church? Catholics are about 23% of the population and at least half of those are cafeteria Catholics. Maybe 30% of them attend mass with regularity. 52% don;t believe in transubstantiation. The Church is obviously in a crisis.
If you believe that the Church will be safeguarded by God, good for you. If the Church becomes careless, irresponsible or dictatorial - hm! I wonder if the Lord will become the same. I doubt it.
‘Simply Maria’ is offensive trash and should not be recommended reading for anyone. While it might not be porn, it is offensive in so many ways, not just to Catholics. It should never even have been published, much less promoted and recommended.I was referring to the GSUSA blog that linked to the Marie Clare website. That magazine is Cosmopolitan for teens. There was an article in the May issue about the GSUSA ( or specifically the contents of their CEO’ purse)
But also on the website for the May issue was links to how “Anal is the new Oral” - namely how oral sex is so commonplace that the really kinky stuff is now anal sex, an article on 10 new sex positions, and an article on how to accomplish a threesome
Why GSUSA thought it was a great idea to have an interview with their CEO about the contents of her purse in that magazine, let alone to post links to it is really beyond me.
Or if the presence of that interview encouraged a young girl to buy a copy of that magazine.
Either way, it does not show the respect for the feminine genus that an organization like that should have.
And that outlook on what it means to be female is todays world is something the bishops should look at.
The books in question are the ‘Journey’ books, effectively the new Girl Scout handbooks. They are not the religious awards, but the means by which the girls do their rank advancement to Gold.
Here is the program
girlscouts.org/program/journeys/
The ‘aMuze’ book is the one with the “Simply Maria” play (which, I agree is not porn, but rather anti-Catholic)
The 'MEdia" book is the one with the link to Women’s Media Center.
I posted the actual page numbers in previous posts.
They TEACH? Is it part of their mandated curriculum? All Councils follow that “curriculum”? All Troops, even those with Catholic leaders?I guess there are no Hispanic girls in Girl Scouts since they teach that Hispanic women are nothing but submissive baby machines and Hispanic men are all ignorant brutes who beat their wives and have mistresses.
The part of society that the guns are being aimed at are the parts that all Christians should be opposing. Do you want your daughter to be helped with birth control and abortions at Girls Scouts? Note that the Church is not condemning Girl Scouts, but rather making sure these things are not happening. I think the Girl Scouts will be fine. In the end this very scrutiny which you decry might make it a place where Christians can trust their children. It begins to scare me. What is the Catholic Church trying to do? Yes, if they promote that book, they teach it.They TEACH? Is it part of their mandated curriculum? All Councils follow that “curriculum”? All Troops, even those with Catholic leaders?
Oh, well.Yes, if they promote that book, they teach it.
If the head organisation promotes it, then the whole organisation promotes it.
Troops with Catholic leaders should note the anti-Catholic, anti-Hispanic message in that book and rethink their affiliation with the whole organisation.
The Girl Scouts lost their way a long time ago. About the time I left my troop in 1965.
Famous last words. That said, I don’t have any children and probably never will because I am going to live a single life.
An ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), short for argumentum ad hominem, is an attempt to negate the truth of a claim by pointing out a negative characteristic or belief of the person supporting it.[1] Ad hominem reasoning is normally described as a logical fallacy,[2][3][4] more precisely an informal fallacy and an irrelevance.[5]Let’s see now:
So, with all that the Church should carry on a campaign against the Girl Scouts, one of the most respected organizations in the United States?
- A continuing sex scandal, new chapters that always seem to be opening, involving priests, including some major church leaders, plus members of the hierarchy who appear to have been remiss in handling it.
- What seems to be a crack-down on nuns, many of them much-beloved within the Church. .
- Going into court to battle Obama and Obamacare re insurance coverage by Catholic universities and hospitals to non-Catholic employees.
- What many view as an attempt a roll-back on availability of condoms.
- The defeat of Santorum and Gingrich as candidates for GOP nomination, both of whom seemed to use their Catholicism to gain support.
- Leak of thousands of private papal documents by the Pope’s butler (and others?).
- Apparent financial shananigans in the Vatican - on the verge of exposure?
- Others problems that could defame the Church which will likely show up.
Not all Catholics are admiring of Donohue and his loud and constant outcries.
I suggest that this kind of scenario is certain to create more division within the Catholic rank and file, weaken the clout of the Church, and lead to a greater exodus from the pews that the Church already is experiencing.
Not quite sure how my posting has anything to do with *ad hominem*, I'm not attacking those individually who make any of these arguments. Just questioning the avalanche of controversies involving the Church, some of which I think are unwise and unnecessary. Now if I were answering your argument(s) by attacking you, that would be* ad **hominem.*See below:estesbob

See above.I think Roy5 was actually saying that there are far far bigger issues to fight other than the Girl Scouts.
That isnt ad hominem, and it isnt personally attacking anyone but its stating what he, and many others, hold to be truth.
Your point is ???See below:
See above.
I disagree. The concerns pertaining to the GS involve issues of morality and the question of what they are promoting among Catholic youth. Parents have enough serious threats which seek to undermine sexual purity coming from TV and the internet without having to be concerned with an organization that is supposed to promote wholesomeness. With all the issues that the Vatical and our Church are dealing with up to and including the recent Vatican document scandal, we need to carefully choose the sabers we want to impale ourselves on. The GSA is not an issue worthy of investigation.
Since the organization is present in the Catholic school system, any issues with GSUSA, by necessity, demand that the bishops investigate.I The GSA is not an issue worthy of investigation. If the GSA is offending you then simply withdraw your daughter from the membership. It really is just that simple.
Have you a daughter in the Girl Scouts? Is her troop promoting immorality? Have you any evidence that local councils are promoting immorality?I disagree. The concerns pertaining to the GS involve issues of morality and the question of what they are promoting among Catholic youth.
