Girlfriend had sex with ex while getting to know me

Fornication is serious, particularly when looking at a marriage partner.

And she LIED about it. Lies are unacceptable in a relationship. Period. Ever.
This. Absolutely right.

To the OP,
I am the same age as you, 34, but I have been married for 15 years. The behavior you describe of your girlfriend, the planned trip, the fornication, the cover-up and the lies…these are all indicators of a person of poor character. That is stating it charitably. My instinct is move on, and look for a practicing Catholic woman, who is looking for a potential spouse and who is cultivating chastity.

It’s a judgement call for sure, but based on the information he’s given us so far, it really depends on whether or not he believes she’s sorry and won’t do it again. She’s not forever ruined or anything like that. Again, I’m just really surprised to hear so many responses saying she’ll never change. She gave into a temptation, as we all do, but we’re supposed to believe in the redemption of those who fall, aren’t we?
Actually, the way the OP described his emotions, I’d wager that in his own mind, she *is *somewhat “ruined”.

As others have discussed, sexual history is relevant when dating (the process of discerning marriage). In this case, she had sex with an ex and called him to arrange a date the very next day. Hmmm. This is not something I think I could ever get over. I could forgive, but I don’t think forget. I could not look at the way we started our relationship with any sense of romance or happy memories. The whole thing would be “ruined”.

But, only the OP can answer this question for himself. Is it something he can get over? If not (which is understandable), then for both their sakes it needs to end.

Why is unchastity to be overlooked in the girlfriend and the OP told to join a religious order?

We are all sinners. Not all sins equally affect one’s married life. Sexual sins are different from many other types in that they directly affect one’s ability to bond in marriage. The indelible marks left on one’s soul by sexual sin will follow one into marriage. This is not say that these things cannot be overcome, but they do require overcoming, and it is not at all unreasonable for someone to want to go into marriage WITHOUT those strikes against them.

There is so much about this thread that I am failing utterly to understand. 🤷
Ok first lets be clear. my suggestion to Join a religious order like the Marists was intended purely as Hyperbole… If it’s good enough for Our Lord to use Hyperbole throughout his teachings then it’s OK for us… (e.g. if your hand causes you to sin Cut it off… Call no man Father… and many more examples)

I would like to clarify that I am not saying it’s OK to sin. Not Fornication, not Adultery not theft, not murder…
but there is a hierarchy of gravity. Adultery is a more grave sin than fornication, and it is almost impossible to voluntarily commit adultery without committing a Mortal Sin. Fornication is Grave matter, but the gravity can be lessened by many circumstances.
The Catechism draws clear lines between these two (related) sins, and uses far stronger language to describe the gravity of Adultery, and likens it to Idolatry.

I am not excusing the O.P.s Girlfriend. I have challenged him to confirm that he is being consistent in his expectations. If he expects his girlfriend to be Chaste, is he holding himself to the same standards?
If having past sexual contact (years before) was acceptable, then why expect a difference standard more recently (but still before they met)?

I will not say it’s OK to sin. But the OP is casting stones at others without saying what standards he holds himself up to.
If he will consider a person who subscribes to worldly values to be a suitable person to court, then he should not criticize her for having those worldly values.
As many others have said, if he without being hypocritical, expects faithfull chastity before marriage in a potential partner, he should make that clear in the earliest possible stages of the relationships.

I met my own wife via on-line dating systems. I will not boast about my prior sins. before I met my wife I had a shameful past.
On our first meeting in person we discussed Fidelity, and we agreed then that we would commit to absolute fidelity from that day.
If we hadn’t I doubt we would have ever gotten married.
The result of that commitment was that our relationship grew and blossomed, founded on real love, - respect and caring for each-other, serving each-other, not being “In Love” which can be a very self-orientated feeling based experience.

I had 10 years before been totally “In Love” with a previous girlfriend. I was utterly intoxicated by her. I wanted to marry her but she refused to have me. That all ended very badly. I now understand how big the difference is between that and the real love I now have for my wife.

But in the OP’s case, his “demands” came as a response to a succession of lies from her. I gather the consequences of her not complying with his “demands” were that he would be unable to trust her, and thus he’d walk away from the relationship. In which case, they aren’t really demands at all, they’re (imho) reasonable feelings he’s imposing on himself, in terms of who he feels comfortable with dating . Perhaps I’m wrong, but that’s the impression that I got.
Maybe instead of lying she should have said something along the lines of I don’t feel that the nature of my relationships prior to meeting you is any of your business. Yes that sounds harsh but then when and if they broke up it would be because they have different relationship views and not because he browbeat her into disclosing things that weren’t his business and now he thinks she is ruined.

I think that’s fair under most circumstances. But as with the OP’s case, once a person has been caught telling suspicious and/or conflicting stories, abstaining from explaining will probably incur more suspicion.

I met my current girlfriend on an online dating site. I’m 34 years old and joined the site sincerely looking for a relationship that could lead to marriage. I met a amazing woman and we fell for each other so hard. But just three months into the relationship I found out that while she and I were exchanging emails (but before we had met in person) she had flown out of state to see her ex boyfriend (whom she had not seen in six months and had lost her virginity to one year prior) and had sex with him. The truth did not come out at once. First I saw pictures of her (alone) in California. Then the lies untruths started “the trip was in November before we met” “I went to see a friend” “I didn’t have sex with him”. It wasn’t until I demanded the truth that the truth finally came out. I tried to leave her but her crying and apologies made me stay. Now two months later it is still torturing my mind whether to stay with this woman or not. She has treated me so well otherwise and is trying so hard to make the relationship work. But I have so much pride, anger and jealousy built up that I feel I can’t go on. It seems like such a terrible foundation on which to build a relationship that I want to last a lifetime. The day after she had sex with him and flew back to New York, she sent me an email to set up our first date. If it wasn’t for this one transgression I have no doubt that I could make things work long term with her. She is otherwise everything I always wanted.
Please, I need advice and feel I can’t go to my friends or family for fear of making her look bad…
I feel sorry for you, but I must ask What else she has or will lie about? Is this seriously a relationship you want to cultivate?

There are a lot of good, if not terribly charitable, points being raised. But the most glaring, to me, issue is that none of us are in any way qualified to give advice on exactly what to do. Every relationship is different. The best thing, as others have said, is forgiveness. But that doesn’t mean acceptance. Perhaps the OP had reason to believe that the girlfriend was a virgin, perhaps in the time they were together she had told him that she was a virgin, or had only had sex once, over a year prior. But definitely, if you find it impossible to get over, you need to let her go. You both deserve better than a relationship that is being torn apart by jealousy and distrust. But don’t rush into anything. Talk to her. Talk to a priest. Get some assistance in determining if you need to get over it or walk away from the relationship.

Thank you all for your responses. I can’t believe the number and the variety of feed back that I have received. Just to clarify a few points. We met on an online dating site. Had been exchanging emails for a few days when she took her trip. She set up our first person to person date the day she returned. After dating in person 3 months did I find out about the trip. Once I knew multiple lies had been told, I said honesty is very important and I will never believe she flew out there and didn’t have sec with him. I never really demanded anything. But after I said that she came clean on everything. Said he was the biggest mistake of her life and when she met me she left her past behind. Deleted all his pictures and phone number. She is trying whole heatedly to make this work now. I don’t feel I was cheated on but hesitant to move further with someone who seems to have somewhat loose values. Thank you all again for your time.

I am sorry but you need to end this now. Faithfulness in marriage is proven before marriage. Internet and long distance relationships are full of pit falls and this is her real character. I am sure at your age, you want to be married but just because you are older, doesn’t mean you should settle for anyone that comes along on the internet. You can’t make it work. Move on and thank God that you have found this out before you did marry her. It is better to be single than be married to someone that can’t be faithful in marriage.
Past behavior determines the future behavior in marriage. Flying off to see some old boyfriend is a real bad sign of heartache and even disease for you.

I would also like to ask for some insight specifically from the women on here. Why would a woman fly out to see a man whom she has not seen in six months? He treated her so poorly and clearly was in the relationship just for sex. Their relationship only lasted a few months. Her explanation to me was that she still had a doubt in her mind about him when she flew out there and that she thought she still had feelings for him. But then she contacts me the very next day to meet me? was she looking for closure? Was it just for sexual release? She said that she really didn’t have much faith that she would find someone from an online dating site but that when she met me everything had changed. She said she never imagined she could meet someone like me and so cut her ex completely out of her life. I know at 34 I don’t expect to find a virgin to fall in love with me. But her behavior just prior to meeting me has just tortured my mind. I care for this woman so much and she is trying so hard to make it work. She has sworn to me fidelity and honesty always and I believe her. But my pride and jealousy are getting in the way of our relationship

Thank you for coming back to clarify some things for us. Although we don’t all agree about how to handle this situation I believe we all are trying to give you things to consider to make the best possible choice for yourself. That said allow me to offer you a view point that you may or may not have considered. She made plans to make this trip weeks possibly months in advance, between then and when she went something in her was starting to change. She had sex with the ex boyfriend and felt worse after than she could have imagined. She decided to take herself off that horrible roller coaster and try to begin again. She set up a meeting with a guy from a online dating site (you) who seemed to match the direction she was moving in or wanting to move in.

All is going well, she falls for guy, until the guy finds out about her trip, she handles it badly because she is ashamed of her actions or sad that and angry she has to relive something she has decided to put behind her…

I’m not saying this is the case or not, I’m saying that it is possible, only YOU can decide if the possible reasons are valid or if the she is a woman who has shown you otherwise that she is capable and desiring of a serious relationship.

You have two choices, you can either let go of her past and move forward with this woman that you describe in such positive ways, or you can end it now. But it’s been 2 months since you found out, so you need to decide now and stop holding this over her head. That’s unfair of you.

As a woman who met her soon to be husband on a dating site I can tell you that I would never dream of altering my behavior, changing travel plans, or acting as though I was in a relationship when I was messaging someone before even meeting in person. She didn’t cheat, she just didn’t know you and you meant nothing to her.

As to your question about why she would go, you’d have to ask her. I would guess to get rid of any lingering doubts about whether or not it could have worked with him, or maybe she was lonely and down and knew that getting attention from him would make her feel loved and attractive, if only briefly. You’d have to ask her.

This confirms my advice earlier in the thread. You have to end it, if this is how you feel. I’m not beating up on you or saying she was correct in her behavior with the ex. What I am saying is she didn’t know you yet, you had not met in person. You say you don’t expect to meet a virgin but apparently you have strong sexual ethics and you need to find someone that fits in with those. You deserve that and if she is a wonderful woman weather she has made mistakes or not she deserves someone who will not be tortured by her past and in turn torture her about her past.

I am usually very careful about what I share of my personal life on message boards but I’ll give you something to consider. When I met my current S.O. the one who I am actively discerning marriage with. I didn’t expect to meet him when I did, and I surely didn’t know he was “the one” I was in the process of making HUGE changes and overhauls in my life and there was a guy I was seeing very casually still in the picture, even though I had decided he was not the one. I was not seeing him very often and we both essentially knew the relationship was over but we were not formally “over”. Yes, very different situation. As me and my now S.O. got to know each other first as friends and realized we are of the same mind on things and wanted to pursue something I of course did the right thing had a conversation with the guy (who was supportive and wanted me to be happy) What if my now S.O would have made value judgements on me based on my past without continuing to get to know me, without continuing to move forward? Again different situation that may or may not apply just something to consider

If I had random hookup sex with an ex, and chastity were really important to me, I would need a lot of personal time to reflect on my actions, and probably would work closely with a spiritual advisor. That last thing I would do is jump right into a romantic relationship. I don’t know what steps your gf is taking in dealing with this. But I think the mature way of dating must include assessment of knowing whether you’re ready for it and when you’re not.

I am a women and to be honest with you, I really don’t know. I think it just boils down to her character and stupidity. She still wants him even though she says she doesn’t or that he was a louse and wishes he wasn’t. It shows her weakness and lack of morals. You deserve better than that. She should keep her pants on and save herself for her husband and not risk pregnancy as well as STD that come with having sex outside of marriage and the way God planned it. This is sad to say but there are a lot of stupid women out there and then they want to blame the men for taking advantage out there. For every jerk of a guy, there seems to be a stupid women that is willing to go along with it. She could have realized he was a jerk and then saved her money by not flying out to see him. Just take this as a learning experience, cut it off because you don’t need someone like this who is using you as a sympathy shoulder and move on.

Sometimes when a man you like (or even love) tells you what you want to hear, you do stupid things. Such as flying across the country and having sex. It sounds to me like she got whatever closure she was looking for (which is not to say she went about it in the right way at all).

You mentioned that when she took her trip you had only been exchanging emails for three days. She made a mistake, but whatever happened on her trip made her decide she was done with him and wanted to pursue something with you. So she had a couple of choices- sit around and do nothing, or continue to correspond with you. Maybe she wasn’t quite ready to move on, but was possibly afraid of losing her chance with you. Her explanation to you about her behavior sounds logical enough to me.

That being said, have you asked her why she lied to you? I think that’s the issue you need to focus on. I think it really depends on how far you pushed her for the truth. I don’t think she should have lied, but I also think it sounds like you pushed her a little and elicited more details than you were owed.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound to me like you are as upset about the lying as you are about the fact that she slept with her ex so recently. It’s okay that it upsets you, but you have to decide whether you are going to get over it and move on or discontinue the relationship. Both choices are perfectly fine. If you do decide to continue, it needs to be put into the past. No holding it over her, and you have to be able to just stop thinking about it. If you can’t or don’t want to do that, then the two of you should probably just move on without each other.

Ummm how is this charitable? Just because there are ethical/value differences does not make this woman stupid. It makes them probably not a good fit for each other. STD’s are NOT a punishment from God for people that don’t do as he would have them too. Its clear the OP thinks highly of this woman weather the relationship continues or not. How do you know she still wants the man out of town? Having sex with one man while a mistake according to our faith doesn’t make one loose, or stupid it makes them a sinner like ALL of us are.

It doesn’t make her loose, but it doesn’t make her spiritually healthy, either. You dont just commit fornication and take a Mulligan. I see a lot of red flags in terms of maturity and prudence in putting the advancement of the relationship ahead of dealing with a serious underlying problem.

I didn’t say STD are punishment from God but are very real consequence of having sex out side the bond of marriage. When one doesn’t follow God’s plan for sex and marriage, they reap the consequences in their bodies in unplanned pregnancies and STD. Someone that is willing to buy and airline ticket to see some old boyfriend, ends up in bed again and then goes to talk about it with someone else they “met” on the internet is not smart. I am going by what OP shared with us and his distress over her behavior. Since it seems from his post and interest he is looking for a marriage partner. This is someone that is not a good choice. Sadly again, basic morality in that sex as designed by God for marriage, not before, not with others shouldn’t have to be defended on a Catholic forum.
