What’s the deal with men (especially young men) essentially blaming women for their problems staying on the straight and narrow with respect to masturbation/”impure thoughts”.

All too often I read posts by young men who seem to somehow think it’s the woman’s responsibility to “dress in a way which will not tempt me”.

This is an almost impossible task for these poor girls. One poster a while ago even had a problem with women who showed a bit of bra strap (from behind) because it was causing him to become sexually aroused/distracted in church…!!!

Honestly boys, this is not Afghanistan pre-invasion. You are not the Taliban. Women are not to blame for your inability to adhere to the lofty standards you have voluntarily chosen to set yourselves.

(For clarity, I must say that I personally have no problem with masturbation as I believe it is normal and healthy. But that is for another thread – so please do not post on that).

Much is whining, some may be true as in all complaining.

Partly yes. You could argue that extreme precautions put an extreme burden on people, but at the very least refraining from intentional actions is a fine request. The next step is to avoid gross negligence.

Well, the gentleman in question did have a high sex drive. On the other hand, you know, scarves and such exist for a reason. Many churches require women in tank tops or similar outfits to wrap something around their shoulders. And I’m fine with that. Between the girl being less drop-dead for a while while praying and the guy possibly giving in to some bad thoughts (remember the exposure is prolonged and hard to avoid) - or even having difficulties concentrating on prayer, I believe it is much more important to preserve the guy’s peace of mind (or even mental purity) than the lady’s eye candy status. And there is nothing taliban in this.

Let’s make it clear: heat and such is one thing, it comes down to functionality. Florida in summer is obviously not the same as New England in autumn.

On the other hand, it is different when the purpose is to look pretty. That is actually a fine purpose and I have nothing against it as such; in fact, I commend it. However, it may not come at any cost. You don’t go to a male prison in a mini skirt and tank top, right? You don’t go teach 13 year olds with cleavage the size of half the blouse, right?

Certain outfits are also created spefically to cause the lookers to have impure thoughts, whether male or female. The intention to cause impure thoughts is never legitimate and it doesn’t deserve any protection, legal or otherwise. Besides, as I said, refraining from intentionally sexying it up a bit is not an undue burden. Paying a little attention and not being grossly negligent isn’t a great toll, either. Below this line, yes, making a thunderstorm in a glass of water over an accidental strop or a piece of forearm skin and forgetting the man has a brain and will of his own, that would be unfair. But above that line, it is fair.

I don’t think there are any standards to set there. You don’t intentionally tempt others. You don’t look at others to lust for them. You avoid being at least grossly negligent and giving others a hard time while trying to be pretty.

I am sorry, but this is relevant. Masturbation is impossible to achieve without impure thoughts. Therefore, if you say masturbation is normal and healthy, you must at least to that extent also say that impure thoughts are normal and healthy. Therefore it is logical that you probably accept more sexual tension in the air than most of us do. This may be part of the reason why you think, as I assume, that “sexy” clothes are fine.

To sum up: It’s men’s responsibility how they look at women and it’s women’s responsibility if they dress with the goal to tempt men.

Your post is very misguided. Reread the second chapter of Genesis if you don’t think that women tempting men is a problem (I’m not trying to blame it all Eve; Adam was sleeping on the job . . .). Of course you are correct in saying that it is also a man’s responsibility to keep himself from sinning but saying that a person cannot lead another to sin is simply wrong. Some recommended reading:

It takes two to tango. One is in control of how they dress/present themselves and the other is in control of their mind and body. Pretty simple.

I will add, that underwear is ment to be under the outer clothes, hence the name underwear. This includes bras, panties, thongs and boxers. No one should have to see someone else’s undies in public!

You leave superman out of this!!!

Surely immodestly dressed girls are not “forcing” guys into thinking impure thoughts or doing impure deeds. That being said, an immodest lady is really saying with the language of her body that she is ok with being objectified and actually encourages it. Again, this is the language the body is speaking whether the mind agrees or not. Just as the body can tell the truth without a word, it can also lie. Unless a woman is really ok with being objectified and used to feed some guys’ lust, immodesty is a lie of the body.

Now guys can lie with their bodies too, of course, and that’s just as big a problem. This is where the OP’s comment on masturbation is indeed relevant. We are in the culture we are in because we are told things like masturbation are ok. After all, the guy’s not doing anything to hurt women, right? Wrong. Masturbation teaches guys that it’s important for them to fulfil their sexual needs; it teaches them to take without worrying about giving themselves in pure love. Guys have an innate desire to love (as do girls), but masturbation teaches them only how to lust and use. It’s a lie in the language of the body.

Everyone would be much better off if we took Ephesians 5 to heart. Guys are to love their brides as Christ loves the church. That means guys’ love is to be so pure that we are willing to be humilaited, tortured, and killed for our women. Girls are to be submissive to their husbands as the church is submissive to Christ. That doesn’t mean that she is a slave to Christ; it means that she upholds and serves Christ with the purest love. This is how God planned relationships between men and women from the beginning (Gen 2:24), and it is how we must look at the opposite sex today, married or unmarried. Guys and girls both have more value than just what their bodies can offer sexually.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t turn this into the 10000000th thread on masturbation. I shouldn’t have written that line, but I didn’t want to miss represent myself.

Thomfra, I have to say, I agree with you on this. Seriously, while women need to be modest, men need to stop blaming women for every single lustful thought they have. Seriously, “a bra strap at Mass!” Um, that’s the point where you focus your attention on, idk, the altar?? The priest?!! Crucifix? Statue of BVM/St. Joseph?? Say a prayer thanking God that women are beautiful and turning your attention towards Him?

Seriously, while we certainly should remember that underwear is "under"wear and that we should follow the laws of basic decency, I think men should also control their thoughts. We do need to remember that modesty really is relative. It’s to the point where women can’t nurse comfortably because people are like, “OMG, breasts!! I’m so uncomfortable!” Obviously, not all men are that uncomfortable because in Europe, there are pictures of the Holy Mother nursing baby Jesus, fully exposed breast, and you would not DARE to call her immodest!!! Meanwhile, in Iran, the reason women have to be fully covered is because men believe they’ll get aroused by seeing a strand of her hair.

Also, are we going to kick the poor girls out of church or gossip about them behind their backs? In summer time, we dress in summer clothes and some areas, it’s just too hot to wear too much cloth, to the point where it feels oppressive. And how far do we take this? Men use the excuse “She tempted me” when they rape a woman! And you know what’s the sad thing? They get believed in the courts:mad:  And they get out of jail after less than ten years:mad:

I like to think I’m modest, but I bet some people would consider my clothes immodest. Modest to me means keeping my underwear “under” where it belongs and not showing everything. But it doesn’t mean I ban spaghetti straps or short skirts, it means I only wear one at a time. If I’m wearing spaghetti straps, I wear long pants with them. If I wear a short skirt (not more than two inches above my knees), I wear a top that covers my shoulders. I don’t wear those skirts if I’m singing in choir or acting as a Eucharistic minister. I don’t wear those shirts to Mass. I haven’t experienced leers or complaints from anyone, in fact, I’ve been told by several very devout Catholic and other Christian men that I am very classy. Yet, I bet people would still consider me immodest simply because I’m not completely banning those from my wardrobe, so there you go.

I understand your position and I’ve said what I needed to say. I had to say something because it’s very relevant to your point, and I have a feeling you think so too or you wouldn’t have mentioned it.

Yet, I bet people would still consider me immodest simply because I’m not completely banning those from my wardrobe, so there you go.
I would say that is not quite the case, a lot of it depends on one’s intention. Does one wear certain clothing with the express intent of wanting that sort of attention of others lusting after them? If so, that’s a problem. That’s one objectifying themselves. Same discretion based on intention exists while dancing, exercising, etc. Notice I made a great effort to be gender-neutral here - guys and girls can both act/dress immodestly with the intention of causing others to lust after them. This is telling yourself in no uncertain terms that self-objectification is ok. There does come a point where even the purest intentions have to acknowledge that modesty is lacking, but an open conscience will not let you down. People know when they’re being used, and this applies whether they are allowing themselves to be used or not.

Now this doesn’t mean that we have to all wear burlap sacks everywhere. It is good to take pride in our bodies and dress in a way that aims to increase our beauty/handsomeness as people (I don’t know about other guys, but I would much much rather be called handsome than beautiful…). Our bodies are inherently good because God made them, and sexuality is inherently good because God made it. It’s our intentions that cause these two to be used either for pure love or for lust. This is true on both sides, for the one inviting the love or lust and the one supplying the love or lust.

It is so powerful, I get more out of it every time I read it. And I’m currently teaching Theology of the Body for Teens, so I am reading it a lot…

I agree with you thom, to a degree. I think that women DO have some responsibility for how we dress, how we come across to others, namely men. That being said, I wouldn’t doubt that many men out there blame women for their failings. Sometimes, women are not astute to their dress and behaviors…but many women are quite astute, actually. When I saw the title of your thread, I thought it would be about girls tempting boys (like into having sex with them) That is a huge problem in the teenage world now. It used to be that parents of young girls had to worry over how a boy was going to treat their daughter, but now, girls are just as aggressive, in many cases. My son who is 16, is a good looking kid, and girls have asked him out, which makes me cringe everytime I hear about it, and he doesn’t want to date girls who are aggressive like that. He is not an aggressive kid, even though he is on the football team, he just is shy–which could be why girls ask him out. But, he said that he doesn’t have a desire to get serious with one girl right now, so he keeps them as friends. He said that he wants to avoid temptation, so why get serious with one girl? I think that is wise thinking, because he knows how the girls can be these days. Not all, but many dress way to sexy, and act way too sexy for their ages.

All of THAT being said…girls have a responsibility to be astute to their dress and behaviors, but boys have a reponsibility to control themselves, also. I think that modesty and morality is a team sport. lol It is hard for men to remain chaste if they are constantly tempted, but at the same time, for the guy who got excited looking at a bra strap during mass…that seems to be more of a personal issue, and perhaps his mind is way too focused on sexuality, than it should be.

Interesting thread.🙂

Well I dunno about all this. D told me not to walk around with my pants hanging down anymore, (like the kids I see goin to school) cause it was making the ladies think bad thoughts about what they wanted do to me. 😛

Not entirely true. Strong exposure may well cause involuntary reaction. Remember than arousal is not voluntary. A man may be stimulated up until erection without wanting it. That of itself is not enough to consider it a sin (he didn’t seek it, he did nothing to pursue it, he did not seek unlawful relief), but he runs a higher risk due to this contribution. In fact, impure thoughts may involuntarily enter his mind (that’s how temptation works, isn’t it?) and he may or may not have the strength to dismiss them. He is responsible for his choices, but the contributor is responsible as well. Regardless whether it’s a man or a woman.

In some cases it’s a proper lie, as in a decision to lead people on. In more cases, however, it will be the stupidity of the present age, i.e. not even thinking about it. In some or maybe even in most cases, the state of mind will likely be too chaotic to make it a proper lie, i.e. a voluntary falsehood.

Yes and the very same can be said about the masturbation of women.

The answer to this is “yes” they are.

There was a very interesting article in Homiletic & Pastoral Review a couple of years ago on this topic. Sorry, I don’t remember the article and my recollection may be flawed, but my recollection is that the article posited that men are “wired” one way and women another. Men are stimulated visually and the way women dress does have an effect on them.

The boys are actively entertaining these thoughts. They are all heathens. Teenage boys are the enemy!!!

Did I mention I have a beautiful 16yo daughter 😉

But seriously, girls need to dress decently but it is up to the boy to do the right thing, I’d had to express this thought to more than one boy over the years (I’ve had 5 different teenage foster daughters) and they just don’t listen until you make them listen. Some of those I may have to go to confession for after I swim.

LOL. Too funny.

Sorry for going off-topic, but I, too, have a beautiful teenage daughter (who, by the way, dresses very modestly).

My standard reply to any young man who expresses interest in my daughter is:

Just watch your step. I may look like an overweight middle-aged has-been, but I have a shotgun, a shovel and two acres of yard in back. If you break my little girl’s heart, you won’t live long to regret it. 😃

(for those who’ve seen 10 Simple Rules for Dating My Daughter, yes, I’ve shamelessly plagiarized this quip.)
