I, for one, am very sick of this subject. I wish the mods would put a moratorium on it.
I wish the mods would put a moratorium on YOU.

Not really, I don’t mean that.

…that’s it. No meaningful or insightful contribution from me.

Exactly. The bible is not our liturgical handbook. Acting as if the bible is the only thing, and ignoring everything the church says is a very, very, very protestant attitude. That is exactly what the protestants did in the reformation, and still today.
Well, when the Church ever gets around to saying anything about using the orans posture, please let me know. 🙂

To say that a hymn or practice is Protestant-like is not putting them down. It’s stating a fact.

And to be quite honest, Protestants bad mouth the Church much more than we bad mouth them. I’m not trying to be holier-than-thou. It’s just the plain truth.
Ok…so I spent 20+ years in Protestant churches…so my experience is plain wrong? Don’t get me wrong…I LOVE being Catholic again…but I think we kid ourselves by saying EVERYTHING Protestant is wrong…

So…they do it so we should do it (some of them bad mouth us)…and I do mean some…the Protestant faith has a lot of denominations and not all of them do it?🤷 That makes it correct?

There is nothing we can learn from them???

Seriously???

(Oh and your statement alone shows that we could stand to learn some charity) Just saying:shrug:

I’m becoming weary of reading these liturgical posts because there are a handful of rebellious people here that are always stirring the pot: “Hey, it says such-and-such in the Bible, so let’s make up our own traditions.” It is a very Protestant attitude. May Jesus help us all to grow in humility and obedience.
Even those of us who think we know it all…

Well, there are numerous Philipine Catholics in our Parish and almost all of them lift their hands during the Our Father, and when stating “for the kingdom, the power …etc” they will raise them waaaay above their heads.

Some now, have started raising their hands copying the Priest during other parts of the Mass and even saying aloud the consecration of the Host! (thankfully it is not the majority doing this abuse!)

I really wish the Priest would say something about these liturgical abuses occuring prior to Mass beginning. Many people are unaware that it is an abuse of the liturgy of Mass.

**I’ve never heard a Protestant say “That’s a Catholic thing to do…therefore it’s bad” **I can almost see the snear on the lip…
You’ve got to be kidding me.I can’t believe that you’ve never encountered the protestant prejudice against Catholics. The whore of Babylon and all that rubbish. Personally, I’m shocked when they are positive about us and consider us to be Christians.

As for charity and other positive things, well, they didn’t invent it, did they? We have everything in the Catholic faith, no need to import their version of things.

Please don’t take this personally, but is it so hard to accept that indeed protestantism is wrong? There is a reason we Catholics believe that.

Nobody here is saying that they as people are bad or anything like that. I’ve met many devout protestants who have such strong faith and love for Jesus. Great. God bless them. But that doesn’t make their faith ‘right’. We should not be importing their beliefs and customs because the Catholic church has it all already and it is the faith founded by Jesus. Our Catholic tradition is not something to discard just becuase other things might seem trendy at the moment.

When it appears in the GIRM I’ll participate in it. Until then, I will simply bow my head and close my eyes (so as not to find myself distracted by those around me participating in this activity). God bless.
me too

OK, I’m going to ask something kinda un-PC but I simply have to.

What is so good about Protestantism?
Why on earth would a Catholic want to look to Protestantism for an example?
Why is sticking to Catholic practice and theology snobbery?

I’m Catholic and I know why we pray the Mass the way we do and have no intention of apologising for that, or taking in protestant practice so we could get all ecumenical.
Did anyone ever suggest such? I think not.

What is so good about Protestantism? The things we share with them. Remember, they are separated bretheren, but still our brothers and sisters.

Why on earth would a Catholic want to look to Protestantism for an example? Perhaps novel ways to help keep people from leaving the faith (excluding overtinkering with the mass).

Why is sticking to Catholic practice and theology snobbery? It’s not; I never suggested it was. What I meant is the looking-down-the-nose at Protestant worship as inferior to Catholic worship. Not everyone or even a majority of forumites feel this way, but it is a hint of such in more than a few posts on the CAF…

Of course not. The point is that there are things we share, and it’s painting with a broad brush to say “Protestantism is wrong”. We, in order to “educate Catholics on these matters” need to be more precise, and not throw eccesiology out the window.

Newbie, what Catholic wouldn’t say our form of worship is superior to protestants? We have the true body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ at every Mass. Protestants don’t.

Therein lies my point; it’s now what we say, it’s (sometimes).
**how **we say it. “Less complete”, methinks, is a more charitable way to make that comparison rather than “superior/inferior”, but again, it’s all in the context, isn’t it?

PS or maybe “easier”, since we have available means of grace through sacraments that others may not have. 😉

Exactly! Catholic worship is by far more superior to protestant and non-Protestant “christians” forms of worship. We don’t need any mutual enrichment from them, because nothing they can give us can enrich us anymore than we already are. Look at what happened at Vatcan II and letting Protestants have a say in our Mass. It’s because of this notion that we somehow must be like Protestants and encorporate their methods of worship in order to bring them back or keep or own. That’s ridiculous. I’m catholic, and I shall worship like one. That’s how we keep our Catholic Identity.

For those of you who have a problem/wonder if it is ok raising your hands during the Our Father at the mass then weep no more and open you Bible 😃

1 Timothy 2:8 (New International Version)
8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

:amen: <<< raise those hands.
No.

Wait, you actually think that protestant worship is equal to Catholic mass? Seriously? May I suggest RCIA so you learn a few things? Comments like this make my head spin.

So we are the chosen people and they aren’t. Our worship is accepted by the Almighty more than other forms of worship.

This is great example of what I’m talking about.

I suppose we cannot learn anything from Protestant biblical scholars either.

Don’t misunderstand for a minute, I’m not saying we ***should ***change anything, just that to think we have the market on worship is arrogant.

Exactly. You can’t keep people in church by tossing away your identity and turning into some man-made religion to suit current tastes and ideologies. That is insanity. I think that too many Catholics really want to be protestants. Tragic.

I think that the Almighty is the one who determines the “equality” or non-equality of worship.

No need. I help teach RCIA.

In any case, I think we need to better define what is meant by “superior”, “better”, “equal to”, etc. to make any further comments on this.

Oh. Dear. I really hope you don’t tell people that it doesn’t really matter if they are Catholic or not.

I think it was clarified several times what we mean by ‘superior’ and ‘better’. Let me repeat. Catholicism: founded by Jesus Christ himself.
Protestantism: Luther, Calvin and a number of smart guys who had a vision of what Christianity is really about.
You decide where you belong and what you believe. According to your comments about equality of worship, you definitely don’t sound Catholic.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus. He instituted Peter as our first Pope, and we can trace all our popes back down to him. We have 2000 years of Apostolic Succession. Catholics are the one true Church. We have the fullness of the truth. Every Sunday we assist with the Most Holy Sacrifice. We have Jesus’ body, blood, soul and divinity made present every Sunday, and in many Churches every day.

Seriously, what do you honestly think Protestants can give us?
