The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus. He instituted Peter as our first Pope, and we can trace all our popes back down to him. We have 2000 years of Apostolic Succession. Catholics are the one true Church. We have the fullness of the truth. Every Sunday we assist with the Most Holy Sacrifice. We have Jesus’ body, blood, soul and divinity made present every Sunday, and in many Churches every day.

Seriously, what do you honestly think Protestants can give us?
Well, good biblical scholarship for one.

Ideas for making catechesis interesting.

Better focus for parishioners on Scripture.

Shall I go on?

We had this until our Catholic Identity starting slipping away from the influx in protestant belief systems.

You can still get it from traditional-minded priests.

Lord Almighty, help us.

It’s Latin, the language of the Catholic Church.
Thank you. Yep, I did recognize that as Latin. Had a class in it too; didn’t do so well.

Good thing we use English in mass for people like me. 😃

By the way, was there anything I’ve written that would lead you to believe that I would make a poor RCIA person? Your sarcasm did not go unnoticed.

So you’re saying that we don’t for the most part have these things in the Catholic Church and that we should have them and Protestants do have them? Seems like you’ve validated my examples.

I disagree. I think Latin is important for Catholics. Being 25 and never learning Latin in school, I still manage to get myself through a TLM.

Yes, everything. Not all religions are equal. Catholicism is the one true religion with th fullness of the truth. All other religions have some degree of truth to them, but Catholicism is the one true Church, and we must not cloud our Catholic Identity with this notion of incorporating protestant beliefs, ideologies, methods of worship, etc. Anyone who does not believe this, or any other matter of the Catholic faith, should not be instructing potential Catholics. There is a very high risk of scandalizing them. We have a big enough problem with this now for cradle Catholics.

I would like to point out that plenty of protestant churches don’t use the orans position for public prayer. My old church never did. I really only encountered it among more charismatic protestant types, and American catholics once I converted. I eventually got used to it, but to me it feels out of place.

You assume too much, young Catholic, you assume too much.

If what you say is true, taken to the extreme, then we have to throw out all Protestant biblical scholarship since the Reformation, no? Interesting that many Catholic authors (biblical scholars) use Protestant biblical scholars as references, no?

It’s one thing to say, as I mentioned, that our liturgy is “superior”, as long as by superior we mean “more correct” and to completely diss everything protestant. Yep, two different things completely.

No because Protestants have their protestant beliefs and views. It used to be that Catholicism could be taught in Catholic schools, but now we have to water it down to avoid offending the protestants.

We don’t need their methods. We need Catholics to stand up and be Catholic. We need priests to get over “the spirit of Vatican II” and tell their congregations that:
  • A) Hell still exists and people go there
  • B) Regardless of what society says, homosexual acts, contraception, abortion, co-habitation, masturbation, and fornication, etc are grave sins
  • C) In order to be saved one must be in the State of Grace
  • D) In order to ensure one is in the State of Grace one must make frequent use of Confession
  • E) In order to facilitate the aforementioned requirement Confession times will be permanently increased significantly
  • F) It is, and always has been, a sacrilige and a grave sin to receive Communion not in the State of Grace
  • G) That the Balitmore Catechism is their friend, and everyone must either re-familiarize or familiarize themselves with it because there will be a test on it at the end…the very end.
  • H) Women are not ever becoming priests, nor will priests be getting married, so they might as well just accept that
  • I) Our Sunday obligation is to attend Mass. Failure to do so without just reason is a grave sin
  • J) Perfect Contrition does not grow on trees
  • K) Anyone who does not believe in any of this can go to Hell (No, seriously, they can.)

No because Protestants have their protestant beliefs and views.
Time out.

I mentioned that Protestants have:

Well, good biblical scholarship for one. Ideas for making catechesis interesting. Better focus for parishioners on Scripture.

…and you replied that:

“We had this until our Catholic Identity starting slipping away from the influx in protestant belief systems. You can still get it from traditional-minded priests.”

…which seems to indicate that these things are good and these are things that we Catholics used to have but that Protestants now have more than we do.

Do I misunderstand?

So if I understand you correctly, you are saying that Protestants ***do ***have some things that are worthwhile that we would find valuable, but then contradict that by saying we do not need such Protestant things.

:confused::confused::confused:

Which is it? You lost me…

No, because what they have is wrong. We don’t use the Bible in the same way that Protestants do, and we have many competent priests who spend years in the seminary learning theology, the vast majority of protestants don’t do this.

Of course there are things we can learn from Protestants. That doesn’t mean Protestant doctrine or liturgy is correct.

Not to call Protestants the enemy, because of course, I wouldn’t be doing that, but even in the case of an enemy, one can study and appreciate some of their tactics.

Things Protestants do well:
  • Instill in the flock the importance of reading the bible on your own. There are verses stuck in my head from when I was a kid.
  • Evangelical zeal - the desire to share one’s faith for the salvation of souls. And I’m not speaking of missionaries. I’m speaking of the laity.
  • Meaty sermons
  • Community
Whether these things existed first in the Catholic Church is besides the point. Where is it now?

Unfortunately, Protestants are missing the most important thing of all: The Eucharist and of course there are lots of errors in doctrine which causes much confusion resulting in countless denominations.

Nevertheless, there are things that a Catholic can take note of and do without changing the definition of what it means to be Catholic.

Please don’t try to even insinuate that protestants have a superior understanding of the Bible than the Catholic Church. The Bible is a Catholic book. All authors of the New Testament were Catholic, and the entire Bible was canonized by the Catholic Church 1,100 years before Luther came along and decided that he knew better. Without the infallible teachings of the Church founded by Jesus Christ to interpret scripture, you end up with false teachings; i.e. protestantism.

That’s why there are so many different protestant sects out there. They all think that they’re infallible, and that God made a mistake when he founded his Church on Peter. Ridiculous!

You’ve got to be kidding me.I can’t believe that you’ve never encountered the protestant prejudice against Catholics. The whore of Babylon and all that rubbish. Personally, I’m shocked when they are positive about us and consider us to be Christians.

As for charity and other positive things, well, they didn’t invent it, did they? We have everything in the Catholic faith, no need to import their version of things.
No…they didn’t invent charity…we have it here in the Catholic faith…but some people forget to use it…So…you are shocked when they are positive about us but yet you refuse to turn the other cheek and not treat them like the enemy? Hmmm…wonder why they are not converting…🤷 Seems so attractive to me…

What you are talking about with the whore of Babylon and such…that is certain denominations…not all protestants. Heck…I’ve quoted saints AND the Pope on my facebook page and had some Protestant classmates hit “like”. Yes…when I came home…their were some…who were not mean per se…but think I’m sincerly deceived…which is a long way from Whore of Babylon…
Please don’t take this personally, but is it so hard to accept that indeed protestantism is wrong? There is a reason we Catholics believe that.

Nobody here is saying that they as people are bad or anything like that. I’ve met many devout protestants who have such strong faith and love for Jesus. Great. God bless them. But that doesn’t make their faith ‘right’. We should not be importing their beliefs and customs because the Catholic church has it all already and it is the faith founded by Jesus. Our Catholic tradition is not something to discard just becuase other things might seem trendy at the moment.
I understand Protestantism is wrong…or lets just say they don’t have the fullness of faith…and not have the Eucharist…they never will. And I’m not talking about discarding Catholic tradition…it just seems some people here think that…wow…I raised my hands during the Our Father…or held hands with someone during it…I’ve totally disregarded dogma…well folks…its NOT dogma so get over it. If you don’t want to…fine… big deal:shrug: You know it doesn’t say in the GIRM to scratch my arm during Mass either…so if I have an itch…I’m adding to it and discarding my Catholic faith??? Please:rolleyes:
