Go ahead and raise your hands during the Our Father

Well, there are numerous Philipine Catholics in our Parish and almost all of them lift their hands during the Our Father, and when stating “for the kingdom, the power …etc” they will raise them waaaay above their heads.

Some now, have started raising their hands copying the Priest during other parts of the Mass and even saying aloud the consecration of the Host! (thankfully it is not the majority doing this abuse!)

I really wish the Priest would say something about these liturgical abuses occuring prior to Mass beginning. Many people are unaware that it is an abuse of the liturgy of Mass.

In places I have been, that has not been my observation with regards to saying the Eucharistic Prayer aloud. In the Philippines it usually complete silence. There was a time we would say “My Lord and my God” during the elevation. But that was about it.

No because Protestants have their protestant beliefs and views. It used to be that Catholicism could be taught in Catholic schools, but now we have to water it down to avoid offending the protestants.

We don’t need their methods. We need Catholics to stand up and be Catholic. We need priests to get over “the spirit of Vatican II” and tell their congregations that:

• A) Hell still exists and people go there
• B) Regardless of what society says, homosexual acts, contraception, abortion, co-habitation, masturbation, and fornication, etc are grave sins
• C) In order to be saved one must be in the State of Grace
• D) In order to ensure one is in the State of Grace one must make frequent use of Confession
• E) In order to facilitate the aforementioned requirement Confession times will be permanently increased significantly
• F) It is, and always has been, a sacrilige and a grave sin to receive Communion not in the State of Grace
• G) That the Balitmore Catechism is their friend, and everyone must either re-familiarize or familiarize themselves with it because there will be a test on it at the end…the very end.
• H) Women are not ever becoming priests, nor will priests be getting married, so they might as well just accept that
• I) Our Sunday obligation is to attend Mass. Failure to do so without just reason is a grave sin
• J) Perfect Contrition does not grow on trees
• K) Anyone who does not believe in any of this can go to Hell (No, seriously, they can.)

During the parent Sacramental meeting in our Parish primary school the representative of Catholic of Education Office stated that the parents “need” to come to Mass “whenever they can” and there is nobody in Hell because Jesus is on the Cross!

I wrote a complaint to the Office and haven’t got a response as yet. That was in February.

I rely on teaching my children the Ortodoxy myself. Unfortunatelly, there are no Latine Rite Masses in Perth in Australia and I have to attend the Mass where the priest is either playing with his microphone or asking for glass of water in the middle of the Mass or making some comments during the Consecration.

Yes, we do need come to the basics.

Uhm yes we are the chosen people now. Anyone who enters into the Church becomes part of the One True faith, I don’t understand what you don’t get about that? This is not being a snob this is the truth and because of this we can have the confidence that we belong to God’s true Church. I mean really? I think you are confusing what being charitable is. It’s not to be “nice” at the expence of the truth. Christ wasn’t “nice” contrary to popular belief, he was full force truth. He said what had to be said and also acted on it, wether we look at it as nice or not it’s up to each individual.

Not to mention the fact Jesus said “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you shall not have everlasting life.” Catholics didn’t throw that in there for fun.

Back to the title topic: Can anyone tell me what is gained by holding and raising hands? Or what is lost by not?

I ask because my wife’s family holds hands and looks at me like I’m crazy for wanting to be traditional. Why should I feel wrong for doing what is taught to do?

I think we both know that the way we pray at mass is not like scratching your arm. There are reasons for that. I’ve seen far worse things than orans at Our Father and this particular issue is not the end of the world. However, the way things are in the church these days I firmly believe that we have to purge it of everything that leads people astray, including the way we behave at mass. Liturgy is central to our faith because of what it gives us. And I’ll now give a instead of rolling my eyes at you.

I do not intrude on anyone’s “personal space”, don’t ask anyone to pray the way I do, and find that my method of prayer is what helps focus.
There is no formal prohibition from the Chruch against it, so why is this such a big deal?

I would like to point out that plenty of protestant churches don’t use the orans position for public prayer. My old church never did. I really only encountered it among more charismatic protestant types, and American catholics once I converted. I eventually got used to it, but to me it feels out of place.

This is true. From my 40-ish years in emotionally demonstrantive forms of Protestantism, I remember that someone who would pray in the orans position would have been considered somewhat ostentatious, altho nothing would have probably been said. Hand-raising in Protestantism is more hands-over-head, palms forward. Having thunk about this for a little bit, I am led to believe that the hand-raising in the Catholic Church is more imitation of the priest than transfer from Pentecostal Protestantism.

I could be wrong. I have been wrong before.
