God Hates Black People?

That is what was on the tee-shirt of a black man that I saw walking out of the grocery store. I couldn’t help exclaim “That is not true!” He said “Oh yes it is! God cursed Ham and we have been suffering every since.” He said “All the countries, all the religions, they stick together. Muslims, Christians, etc. But black people cannot come together as a people. That is because God hates us!”

I was stunned. I said “Well I have heard people of color, black people who have had near death experiences where they felt a pure source of love when they died and came back.” I said “You probably think religion is the opiate of the people, right?” He said yes. I said “I can agree that it has been used that way. And I think people are the ones who hate and discriminate. But thank you for sharing your thoughts.”

What do you think? Any Catholics who are black who would like to comment?

Absolute rubbish. We’re all Africans if you go back far enough. It’s also absurd to lump all Africans together as a single race… there is more genetic diversity in Africa than anywhere else. Distinct African groups are more different from each other than say Europeans and Asians are from one another.
 
I wonder what causes this man to feel so hated. I feel truly sad for him.

I come from a minority family (not black, but First Nations). This man sounds mentally ill. There have been a number of black Popes and there’s a list of black saints.

Best not to argue with someone who has obvious mental issues.

I don’t think he was mentally ill. He was far too eloquent to be deranged. I guess he just has bizarre logic. That is for sure. I think I should pray for him.
 
Skin color is pigment. Why would God hate someone for having a skin color they never chose?

Nature has selected for people with darker skin in tropical latitudes, especially in nonforested regions, where ultraviolet radiation from the sun is usually the most intense.

I have no clue. But that man must feel so sad inside to walk around wearing a tee shirt like that.
 
Indeed. He clearly doesn’t understand why he has dark skin. If he did he wouldn’t be wearing that shirt

Sorry, no. Mental illness is not relegated to those who are uneducated.
 
It has not been conclusively proven there were any black Popes.

There were several African Popes - but they were North African and probably more olive or brown than black. The iconography of them supports them being middle eastern looking, not black.

There’s never been a black Pope like, say, Cardinal Sarah.

Not black, different minority group I belong to. But the only religion I know of that teaches that (officially or not) are Mormons. I don’t think they teach God hates black people, but Mormonism has historically taught dark skin is a curse.

:roll_eyes: Nuiance. Obama is considered “Black” and he’s half white.
 
It’s not nuance, it’s blunt historical fact.

Obama has Kenyan ancestry - there’s never been a Pope anywhere close to being from Kenya or anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa.

So again, have there been African Popes? Yes, a few.

Have there been black Popes? No.

Like I said, black is a very arbitrary term. There is immense genetic diversity between distinct groups in Africa. What we think of as “black people” is a social construct.
 
I believe this man got exactly the reaction he wanted. He put the shirt on for a reason, maybe to make a statement or just “rattle” people. I would have responded with "Jesus loves You’ and left it at that. If I responded to every tee-shirt I read I would be behind bars. Take comfort in the fact that prayers are being said for him. God Bless
 
Depends how you define “black”. As I said, from a biological, genetic perspective, lumping all sub-Sahara Africans together as the “black race” is nonsense.
